Austinnnn Jones. What a gun.
"Is this the right room for an argument?"
"I told you once."
"No, you didn't."
"Yes, I did."
"Listen, an argument isn't just the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says, it's a series of statements designed to support a particular conclusion."
"No, it isn't."
"Oh, I've had enough of this."
"No you haven't"
"Oh shut up."

Barker should have been at half back flank but we needed him everywhere!

Barker would have been if he'd played there enough, unfortunately he was always needed to fill other holes. Therefore I'm going for Austin Jones.

Re: Best half back flanker in the past 50 years
Justin Peckett was certainly one of the most skilful. He was a good runner, could kick both feet and could mark overhead. He was also a good reader of the play. A most underrated player who had 252 games with the Saints. He was second in the B&F twice, including in 1997.

Does BJ belong in the rebounding flanker category or more of a general utility?

Re: Best half back flanker in the past 50 years
Barks.
Daryl Griffiths should have been one of the Club's greatest ever players but for leaving at the ripe old age of 23. Terrific on a back flank, but a star as a ruck-rover. Made his debut as a full forward aged 17 in 1963, kicked a goal with his first kick in the opening minutes at Windy Hill and was brutally cleaned up by "Bluey" Shelton a few minutes later. His first season lasted all of 5 minutes.
Jimmy O'Dea was a great servant over 13 or 14 seasons, Greening incident and all. A good size and tough as they came.
Aussie absolutely blossomed when he took on the role of a running half back; I was very surprised when he retired. But Trevor Barker, brilliant at full back, became a real star on the back flank.

Re: Best half back flanker in the past 50 years
Austinn Jones for me -- quite easily. His delivery out of defence was absolutely superb.
Joffa Cunningham next.
I loved Jimmy O'Dea.
And for some reason I rate Brett Voss very highly there too.
Trevor Barker and Robbie Muir were both superlative defenders -- amongst our greatest ever -- but were they half back flankers?
Alex Jesaulenko was an OK player too.

Re: Best half back flanker in the past 50 years
Re the question from Whiskas re BJ, I have him on the other back flank. I am waiting for BFUSA to invite us to pick our best team of the last 50 years. I go back further than that, but will enjoy the (friendly ) debate when we try to put these champions into a team.George27 wrote:I have Barker as the best HBF, Aussie on the wing, and Darryl Griffiths off fhe bench as a midfielder who could also play HBF.

Re: Best half back flanker in the past 50 years
Neil Besanko "Racehorse" was a competent half back.
He was one of the fastest players I have seen at the Saints, along with Aussie Jones 2-3 decades later.
Aussie of course, was also a very fine half back (and wing), with pin-point disposal.
