Chips - the General

Post: # 1099417Post Junction Oval »

I was sitting on the fence last night, within the 50 mtr arc last night.

I know that Sam Fisher does this all the time, but I was very impressed by the way he went about "managing" the backline. Setting things up, giving instructions and not being over-the-top with players when mistakes were made, or goals kicked (not that I could see anyway).

Well done Chips - keep up your great efforts.

He's our best player this year.

Absolute star.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

Seriously, the most pathetically woeful nickname ever donned by a professional sportsman.

It's just woeful!

Gun.

Found himself in the middle for a short while, picked himself up a couple of centre bounce clearances.

Made himself into a genuine utility, can play anywhere.

One of, if not the best defender in the league...

He is so good at reading the play, that he is constantly filling holes and helping out, going 3rd man up... Due to this ability, it is overlooked that his one on one work is so good as well...

So sure with his skills, perfect size, perfect pace... Champion player...

Underrated by the boader community IMO, who generally class him as a gun player, but I truely believe there is noone better in any teams back 6 going around at the moment...

He's a brilliant, athletic defender who has an incredible perception of reading the flow of play. You very rarely see him looking flat footed.

Couldn't help but to notice "The General" in the thread title.

Are you comparing him to Carlton's staunch defender of the past, Peter Dean?

B&F leader at this stage with Dal a close second (imo).

Ross has said before that he is the 'captain' of our backline, with Lenny running the middle and Rooey the front end.

Didn't come about because Leigh Fisher was also playing at the time and hence, Fish and Chips because poor old Leigh Fisher looked a bit like a fish!

Nothing to do with how he looked. Every Fisher i know is Fish and as that was taken Sam became chips.

Really? I quite like it. The players must too since they use it.

I know - no effort whatsoever put into it!

Appalling really.

He is fast becoming St Kilda's greatest ever defender IMO. Unlikely to do so in terms of awards though considering he has a total of 5 brownlow votes from 144 games from 2004-2010. Verdun Howell might have him there.

Neil Roberts won a Brownlow playing at CHB - CHips' position.

I didn't see Roberts play, so I'm happy to declare CHips is the best CHB I've seen at St Kilda.

As for teh best ever defender, well there's been a few who were pretty good
Howell
Murray
Neale
Frawley

just to name a few Full Backs.

It's a bit difficult Mr Magic, to compare players from different eras.

In his day, Neil Roberts was one of the first of what I would call "athletes."
A fantastic player in a piss-weak team !

As you would expect, players of that era could not live with the fitness or kicking skills of today's players.

I agree, maybe it's impossible to compare players from eras 50 years apart.

Nonetheless, I feel of those who played CHB for the Saints since I started watching, Chips would be the best.
Better than Synman who I considered to have been the best I'd seen prior to Chips, Elphinstone, Morris, Reynolds, Robert Elliott.

Given that the game is played entirely differently toady, I would find it difficult to say he's a better defender than the following Full Backs we had:-
Howell, Neale, Murray, Frawley, Hudghton
