Hard questions need to asked!

Post: # 1134541Post Buckets »

Tonight has shown unfortunately that Ross has to ask the hard questions and cut the list dramatically and make changes to the leadership for next year!

Who gets cut?
What type of players do we need to draft?
Is it time for Roo to hand over the captaincy?
Is there anyone that we should look at trading out/in?
Time to change up the style?
How the hell do we improve our disposals?

Yeah, this really needs to be addressed. We've shown glimpses of genuine attack, but 50 points won't win us a game of footy any more.

The defensive plan was innovative and served as well for a few years, but we need to kick more goals - it is as simple as that.

Amongst other things we need a new forward line and that will be almost impossible to change in one off season...

Is it really the forward line that is the issue or the midfield? And game plan?

When the ball hits the ground (from Kosi and Roo) the ball gets shot straight out - why not try something different or seriously consider Walsh etc,, ?
Do something !
Try something !

Maybe it's the forward line...the midfield and the game plan...outdated as it is

maybe in this modern game you just can't get by with so many players with shoddy skills....

Agree. Skills are atrocious. Game plan is good. We play on after a mark more than most, we are attempting to run and carry but skills are too poor.

A lot of faith has been put in Walsh by the posters on here. I hope he lives up to expectations... because if he does that would certainly solve a problem.

Milne 55 goals
Riewoldt 36 goals
Schnadzo 30 goals
Koschitzke 15 goals
Dal Santo 14 goals

Each of those players, plus others like Montagna and Goddard, are down on last year. Again it has been left to Milne to carry the load; based on those figures you would think he is the full forward.

Riewoldt needs to be kicking over 40 a year. Schnadzo is doing his job. Kosi missed a dozen games, otherwise he'd be kicking around 30 you'd hope.

But we need another good haul from someone. We need another 30 goal a year player. Can Goddard be useful for 30? He'd need to spend a bit more time up forward but he is a viable option. Can Walsh came in and make an impact?

Riewoldt kicked 70 goals in the year Fraser got his ton, move heaven and earth to get an established full forward and watch the superstar flow again without being double and triple teamed constantly.

Whatever it takes, get one. 8-)

2005 was it?

170 goals from 2 players, this year we barely managed 150 from the leading 5 goal kickers. Says it all really.

As I mentioned, the defensive game plan was great for a while but now we need to become an attacking unit again. The aim should be to be scoring at least 15 goals a week, and once that is achieved then worry about fine tuning defence.

Unfortunately, Roo is only a shadow of his former self and I can't see him getting any better anymore.

Midfield tonight IMO, I'm not going buy the stats, but we appeared (to me) to be smashed at most stoppages.

The forward line toiled hard, though it could of tried harder to lock the ball in, but Roo obviously is suffering very badly with that knee, and Armo was unfortunately quiet.

Maybe a new thread needed for this subject, but I believe it is time to find a new position for Roo. He is no longer the power forward he has been for years. Maybe a role similar to Adam Goodes. Now is the time to groom Walsh as CHF. And Kosi looks more at home in the back half as well.

Thing is I have never seen him as a power forward! I don't know but when I look at real power forwards I see big hulking men who can crash a pack and take the mark. Roo has always used his aerobic capacity to burn his opponents and get himself free. Yes he can take a pack mark but not in the same vein as a Brown or Carey. IMO
