That is a very intresting suggestion and I agree 100%. I would be all for Sam Fisher as captain next year.Dr Spaceman wrote:I don't subscribe to any view that it has to be a mid or a forward.Thinline wrote:Roo's fine by me, but I'd love Lendog with the (c) next to his name.sainterinsydney wrote:I still think Lenny Hayes should be captain. I really think Riewoldt should be given a rest from the captaincy, so he can concentrate on playing to his potential.
Roo's fine by me also, however if we are to make a change there wouldn't be many more deserving than Sam Fisher.

Well I do think BJ would make a good captain.ÂSainterK wrote:Can I ask a simple question, why don't people think BJ would be a good captain?
I just don't get it....
However if Roo steps down I'd be looking at Fisher first. He certainly ticks all the boxes in terms of being courageous, consistent, resilient etc.
The other thing is this. GWS are likely to throw a ridiculous amount of cash at BJ. If that's just too tempting for him he's likely to walk whether he's our captain or not. And having lost our coach at the end of 2011 I'd hate to lose our skipper at the end of 2012.
Make him Captain as a reward for staying, not as a bribe to stop him going.
fisher maybe a great player but he's not a great leader. you only have to read the witness statements in the lovett case to work that one out.Dr Spaceman wrote:Well I do think BJ would make a good captain.ÂSainterK wrote:Can I ask a simple question, why don't people think BJ would be a good captain?

don't reckon Sam is all that accomplished when it comes to media - comes across as quite shy (although he seems to fire up in the Twittersphere!)Hurricane wrote:That is a very intresting suggestion and I agree 100%. Tramps like us.............
i love Roo and he is a brilliant captain, but BJ is a born winner and i think having him as might help push us towards a more winning culture that doesn't let up, something that i feel we have lacked at stages. BJ doesn't let up and cries when he looses, we need to instil this type of culture into our younger players. Roo doesn't give up either, but on GF performances it leans towards BJ. It would also be a good incentive to stay as he mentioned earlier in the year that he wants captaincy

Does thinking someone else has blossomed into a really good candidate for captain equate to being harsh?BigMart wrote:Very harsh judges....

Captain during two real premiership tilts...where he was largely responsible for being there...
Doc. I love Fishers consistency, how he made something of himself even after being quite a late pickup in the draft, how he always helps his teammates and it quite the on field leader.
I agree with others though, I just don't know if the media stuff comes easy to him?

FWIW I too dont believe Riewoldt is a natural leader.......he inspires others but so too did Harvey and he also isnt what I term a natural leader.
I think a Captain has to be more comanding of effort and respect for the club and Goddard has that "streak" in him that will drag others with him IMO.
Sure, he has to be careful not to be another Buckley, but as he matures I reckon he'll temper that and learn.
Hayes is right now THE most natural leader we have.............but how long term??

I believe he is judged very harshly, with many of our own fans seemingly being "over" him. However, I believe he still has much to offer in the role and is still our best choice as captain.
I'm a huge BJ fan too and think he will be a great captain....one day.....
just don't think it should be this year.
Ultimately the coaches and the board will make that decision, and whoever they choose will have my support.
"At the end of the day, a coach and a fitness adviser doesn't make a good football team, they're not the only ones who got us to two Grand Finals." Lenny Hayes. 27/9/2011.

I think with Hayes he learnt on the job when he was in fact our sole captain under GT. Roo also had to learn to be a leader under GT when he was annointed as captain at a relatively younger age than Lenny. BJ needs to show a bit more maturity and discipline on field and he is a great candidate for captain in 2013.Teflon wrote:What of that will change if hes not captain????????BigMart wrote:Very harsh judges....

Give BJ lots of opportunities to lead the side on field in 2012, and sound him out whether the captaincy is something he strives for. In other words, let him get the taste for it. Let him captain the club in Roo's absence. Next year could be Roo's last year as captain and I think I like all the arguments for BJ becoming our captain, and I agree it could help secure BJ longterm if this is what he wants.

I'm more curious to see if BJ can put in sustained performances over more than a 2 year period. As this year he was tagged and deviated from his previous elite output.SainterK wrote:I have.plugger66 wrote:I am curious to see how Raph would go as captain. Maybe he should get it to see how he responds. By the way if the match day pressure is enormous why give it to BJ. It may effect his game. I havent seen it effect Rooy. What I did see this year was a guy struggling with injury.SainterK wrote:If they don't do it now, you'd think he'll have to captain until he retires else it would get even more awkward to remove it?
I thought it should of been done end of 2010, but with Watters coming on board, there is still a window to change it up.
BJ is ready IMO, surprised so many aren't at least curious to see how he'd go as captain, seriously...not even a little bit curious?
As Roo said, I don't expect him to change his leadership around the club, but I reckon it will impact his match day pressure enormously.
Last year.
You appear to struggle with the fact that not everyone has an opinion the same as yours?
BTW Roo has done it for 10 years. IMO it's a simple view to think the captaincy would affect him at 28yo and not as a younger more inexperienced on.
It also surprises me how many people associate attitudes and thoughts based solely on body language on the sporting field.

BJ is my first choice and Dempster is my second choice.SainterK wrote:Can I ask a simple question, why don't people think BJ would be a good captain?
I just don't get it....
And yes Im dead serious abour Dempster. Team first attitude .
Would be similar to Ling or Maxwell IMHO.
Surely we have past under 10s where u pick the star player as captain?

No probs with BJ as Captain, just don't want to go through the whole process again in 12 months time.Dr Spaceman wrote:GWS are likely to throw a ridiculous amount of cash at BJ. a further thought; devil's advocate could argue Nick has captained badly this year...
should never have held that press conference
should never have stated us against them
should never have allowed that photo to be taken or surface
should never have commented about his leanings at election time
should never have let himself play with such a bad knee
should never drop your head on the football field as captain
