dermie quote
this was in relation to izzy but i think we should all take it on board before we mark any of our guys under 23 (rhys, cripps, ledge, simpkin, siposs, saad, mcevoy etc etc etc)
"There's a kid at Geelong at the moment, Tom Hawkins, who is the talk of the town but he's been in the system for five years," Brereton told reporters.
"He played five good games last year, two of them were in the finals, and he's played three good games this year.
"Previous to that he took four years to learn the game and we marked him hard"

Re: dermie quote
Dermie also said that Robert Harvey went on too long and didn't know when his time was up, which is just freaking hilarious coming from an absolute munter like him, who was just plain embarrassing at not one, but two more clubs after Hawthorn quite rightly tried to retire him...
No cred in my book.

Re: dermie quote
Easy does it. Just because Dermott believed he could have played on does not mean he is devoid of credit.dragit wrote:Dermie also said that Robert Harvey went on too long and didn't know when his time was up, which is just freaking hilarious coming from an absolute munter like him, who was just plain embarrassing at not one, but two more clubs after Hawthorn quite rightly tried to retire him...

If he was so credit-less then why has he been appointed as a forward line specialist coach for the Giants?
Why does he have countless jobs in the media and is one of the better personalities going around?
Hawthorn decreased his contract after it expired due to financial issues however do not let your little story get in the way of what really happened.

Exactly.
Except for Sam Crocker. He should have been delisted to the rookie list after half a season from being drafted.

Re: dermie quote
That would make him even worse in my book, wouldn't take a pay cut when he was absolutely in decline, his seasons at Sydney & Collingwood were pretty damn sad.The Redeemer wrote:Easy does it. Being in the media does not necessarily mean that you know what you are talking about. It generally means that you have been involved in a premiership. A Lynch, D King, C Mooney, etc etc all muppets that we have to endure because they were fortunate enough to have won flags.
You may love Dermie, but I don't, he's okay with a grain of salt.
I take more notice of Lethal personally.
Re: dermie quote
Excellent point... This part really irritates... How Mooney has now got a gig is beyond me... He is wrong so often that its comedic... I'm still getting over his round 1 first quarter prediction that Mitch Clark was going to kick 10 goals if Goose played on him... He was serious, reiterated it a few times..dragit wrote: Being in the media does not necessarily mean that you know what you are talking about. As for Dermie, he is ok... Much better than the newby's you mentioned above (add Ricciuto, Glen Jakovich etc..).. he does pontificate every now and again, but makes sense 60% of the time... That strike rate is better than most...

Re: dermie quote
Germie wings it on ego alone. It shows. The guy adds very little to anything.
Funny, I don't mind Lynch, but Mooney and King are gobsmackingly horrible.

Re: dermie quote
I think that he probably has a hefty ego, but I'm sorry for mine he's one of the most astute commentators going around, and he might not be good with all the peripheral stuff, but when it comes to analyzing a players strengths and weaknesses and passages of play, there are few better. When Dermie talks, I have learnt to listen.
Whatever shortcomings he has as a human, (don't we all?), he is practically peerless as a special comments commentator. The fact that he so obviously knows it is what grates with many viewers/listeners.

The original figjam. But I must admit, outside the saints he was easily my favourite player of his time.

Re: dermie quote
Good to see that this has already gone completely off track and gone to what everyone thinks about Dermie, instead of what he said and whether it has any relevance to our team, as suggested in the OP!
I suggested the similarities between Rhys and Hawkins the other day so I agree with this, especially for the taller ones, who often take longer to develop and start to really belong in a team.

Re: dermie quote
I love Harves but his final year was a little rickety. He'd be sensational one week and ordinary the next (see the 2008 finals series).dragit wrote:Dermie also said that Robert Harvey went on too long
Likewise, Nathan Burke just battled through 2003 and realised the game was getting beyond him. Stewey Loewe was just a pair of giants hands in 2002 - his mobility was shot.
Great players battle towards the end. It's a fact of life. Very few go out on top.
Derm's view holds plenty of weight - he knows all about players who've gone on too long. He was one himself. Takes one to know one.
Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

Re: dermie quote
Ask Nicky Winmar what sort of charactar Dermie has. Absolute F wit. And that's being nice. Don't take anything he says seriously. Biggest over analyser there is in the game. Keep it simple Dermie, you Knob.

Disagree, he also said famously he wouldn't coach the Saints because we didn't have the cattle just before we came good. He is a lazy special comments man that wings it in my opinion.Austinnn wrote:I think that he probably has a hefty ego, but I'm sorry for mine he's one of the most astute commentators going around, and he might not be good with all the peripheral stuff, but when it comes to analyzing a players strengths and weaknesses and passages of play, there are few better. He seems to state obvious issues and bristle at anything that isn't traditional or vintage style. To me he is living in the 80s still and fluctuates between boof head and metro depending on the day. And those awful FOX ads make me want to run him down in my car.

Dermie IMHO was one of the best players I've seen. Could be dirty, but in his defence, since he was prepared to dish it out, he was also prepared to cop it. Injury shortened his career, and from memory played one good game only with each of the Swines and Filth. Should've never played those last two years.
Totally agree with Austinnn's assessment as above. Dermie knows his stuff. His only prob' as a commentator, which I'm amazed he hasn't been able to address, is that brevity isn't in his dictionary.
Because I reckon Dermie knows his stuff, I'd be interested to hear his reasoning as to why Harves went on too long. IMHO Harves retired at exactly the right time. In his final year, and clearly way past his prime at 83 years of age, Harves was still able to more than earn his place in the side. That to me is a testament as to how good the bloke was An all time champion - and also as a player.
It's Dave, man. Will you open up? I got the stuff with me! -------Who?

Re: dermie quote
Never said he is never wrong - clearly he was about us 10 years ago, and plenty of other stuff, especially non-technical elements of the game.
Never said he was a great bloke, or that he had a great personality. Sure lots of other players think he's a hammer, I dont reckon he cares what others think outside his Hawk buddies.
It's frustrating to hear someone over-analyse the technical aspects of something when you enjoy it on a simpler level, but if you want to know why something happened, he often has a good observation. Plenty of commentators do keep it simple, he's employed for analysis.
Haven't listened to his work much in the last few years, and haven't seen any of his ads.
I remember when BBBHall was a Saint, Dermie picked up a regular weakness in his work. He took his game to another level once he worked on that. No, it wasn't anything to do with punching on.
To get back to the point, what Dermie said about Hawkins is obvious, but easy to forget. Patience is necessary.

all fair points, his charm is probably in the fact that he hasn't over intellectualised the kicking of a ball. And very good point on patience.Austinnn wrote:Never said he is never wrong - clearly he was about us 10 years ago, and plenty of other stuff, especially non-technical elements of the game.
