Re: Bob Murray question?
I was there that day and it was an absolute blood bath, both on and off the ground.
Whoever lost was relegated to the Second Division of the VFL and sometime during the game, the brawl amongst the crowd, spilled over onto the ground as the fence collapsed and the fists kept flying.
Sandy won.

Re: Bob Murray question?
Twice. he was recruited from Sandringham as a full forward in 1962. He was no good. One fateful day in 1965, the Queens Birthday clash at the MCG, Allan Jeans switched Bob to full back and Verdun Howell (our then full back and state representative) to full forward. At the time, the previous year's premiers, Melbourne, had won the first 8 games of the year. We beat them by 10 goals, and Melbourne really hasn't been the same since.saintbrat wrote:did he play for Sandringham?
Bob retired in 1972 but was talked back into playing in 1974. He retired again and went back to Sandy for a few years as (I think) playing coach.
I lost track of the number of times he took contested saving marks on the last line of defence for the Saints. Of course, his most important was in the last 20 seconds of the 1966 GF. Talk about pressure. Without it, Barry Breen's point would have been just another score in a losing GF.

Yes..Bob Murray came back to Sandy...but not a playing coach...he left Sandy as forward...ended up as VFL state player at Full back and returned to Sandy playing up forward...kicked 12 at Port Melbourne on one occasion...perfectionist wrote:Twice. he was recruited from Sandringham as a full forward in 1962. He was back at Sandy a couple of weeks ago for the 1962 premiership reunion...looked as fit as ever...
I was on the scoreboard for that game...most probably Sandy's most important game in their history except for Grand Final games...huge crowd...fights everywhere...on and off the field...Alf Beus was reported for hitting an umpire and got suspended for a year...it was later reversed...

He was a great hard working player - he was interviewed recently on SEN - I reckon Simpkin has the same work ethic.

Re: Bob Murray question?
As a fullback he used to ask the coach Jeans before the game which side of the ground he wanted him to kick out to after a behind. And then he just did it every time. None of this risking switching play to the attacking side of the ground.

Re: Bob Murray question?
Yes, Bob Murray did return to Sandy to finish his footy. That was his second last game for the Zebras. Fitzroy legend Kevin Murray was the coach for the Zebras in 1976. The following week Bob played his last game for the Zebras against Port Melbourne kicking 12 goals. I think Bob returned to the Saints in 1977 assisting with the Under 19's. 1977 was the year Ross Smith took over from Alan Jeans as senior coach of the Saints and apart from 1978 was a very poor period for the Saints until the early 90's. Bob is/was a secondary school teacher and I believe he is living in the Wangarrata area. Bob is a very humble/gracious person and a Saints legend. Strong mark. Hard to believe he only stands around 6 foot was a beautiful kick of the footy in all forms (torpedoes, drop punts and even the drop kick). Great reader of the play. In todays terms probably could play on a half back or forward flank. Des Kennedy was another ex Saint who played for the Zebras in that year but not in that game.

I used to go to quite a few Zebs games as a young fella back in the 70s and seem to remember Ian Cooper wearing the Zebs jumper.GoMilney wrote:Yes, Bob Murray did return to Sandy to finish his footy. And later on Rex Hunt.
But while I could be right/right I could also be right/wrong, wrong/right or even wrong/wrong. It was a long time ago after all.

And a very unflappable character. Anyone who could kick a dropkick with 6 seconds to go from 20m out from the filths goal, and being only a point up in the 66 GF must have nerves of steel. Thank God he didn't fluff it.

Re: Bob Murray question?
A truly great player; he played on well into his 40's in the Ovens and King League. He was a school teacher and, I believe, he still lives in the North East.perfectionist wrote:Twice. he was recruited from Sandringham as a full forward in 1962. He was no good. As a little tacker I was lucky to see Bob make his debut for the Saints against Melbourne at the Junction Oval; played full forward and booted 4. Today he would be big news on that performance but there was a teenager in the ruck making his debut by the name of Carl Ditterich (god, where could we find another one like him?!). A young bloke on the wing named Stewart also stole a bit of his thunder. The 4th first gamer was another school teacher "Big" Jim Wallis from Quambatook, a real class act who never played again after doing his knee early in '66.
No "recruiting manager" or draft picks back then, just a great deal of hard work and craftiness. And the year before, the Saints snared a bloke called Baldock! Makes all the current twaddle about draft picks seem like, er, twaddle!

Someone who knew him a the time sad he was a really quite person-not when he stood in the goalsquare for the Zebras.

Re: Bob Murray question?
Great read - I remember, as a youngster, seeing quite a few games at the Junction and with the players aforementioned. Good memories and a very good read for an old fart!
Was there on the outer wing as a youngster flying the flag in '66 - still loyal, still passionate!

I can remember Bob Murray saying that all he could see were two players out on the flank for the Saints, amongst a mob of Collingwood players when he went back to take that that kick. One was Alan Morrow and the other was Darryl Baldock and he was confident that if Mocca couldn't take the mark and the ball then spilled to the ground, Darryl would gobble it up, so he said he felt no pressure at all.....
How was that for confidence in your teammates?
