Goddard(not about trading him)

Post: # 1239810Post bennymac5 »

I think if we have seen anything throughout his stint on the sidelines, it is that we don't need him to play the sweeper role across half back. The back line has functioned well IMO by backing themselves to kick. I now think we must mainly use him as a mid because our kicking into the forward 50 is still quite ordinary.

Agree - mid or high half fwd/wing so he's the guy sending it inside 50

Got to agree we were to predictable using him in a sweeper roll, it's too easy for opposition coaches to plan against

He is not the only one, for some reason Mid sized Number 1 picks are destined to play half back after dominating u18 as mids

I have an idea. Lets play him where he plays his best and where it hepls the side the most. HBF and on ball is good for him and us. Or we could play him forward and watch him play ordinary and not help the side.

I think it's good to be not so predictable all the time like when we lost Nick for a while a couple of years back, while I do recognise a consistance of playing group.
Opposition often attempt to tag Goddard out of the game, what worked the last 2 weeks (Big Mac dropping back) may not work next week.

I reckon when you have as many posts as me you do have plenty of imput compared to others. I also see the need to teach others about the game. I love sharing my knowledge.

problem with goddard is he is not quite a KPF or KPD and not quite a MID, for that reason he is expendable. we can cover his lose easier than say a reiwoldt, hayes or fisher.

Good thread. With the team as it is now, I reckon play him midfield. I think he also thinks he's best suited as a mid. I agree that we need him for his ability to hit targets inside 50. Some of the delivery in recent weeks has been pretty average.

With a quality tagger he might be struggling to get a kick or get involved, so then the coaches decide where he can play a role. Move him forward as a leading target or get him to defend as third man up if some of the power forwards are having a day out.

Either way, his suspension will be a wake up call and I expect BJ to come out and show us all what he's capable of.

Play him where ever it was he played in 2010 GF1.

Goddard's played only one full game as a key position forward. (Actually, it wasn't a full game, but let's put that aside for a minute).

He kicked five in that match, which was in 2010 after Rooey did his hamstring.

So his strike rate as a full forward is 100 per cent.

Every time he has played in that position he has kicked a bag.

Interestingly, it was against Fremantle, the club which has confirmed publicly it is in the market for a key forward.

The Dockers are said to be very interested in Travis Cloke, and if they can't get him, Brendon Goddard.

If they do have him in mind in that role, I doubt it is Ross's idea (he's not capable of thinking outside the box).

He may have been overruled by his employers and whoever is putting up the money (mining interests, etc).

I remember that game Carl, it's when he drilled the ball into the cheersquad...played naturally as a forward, came easy to him.

My only doubt is his body, can he leap at the moment, appears to be trying to again in recent weeks.

I agree. I think Goddard can be a damaging forward.

if you're considering time spent in the forward line, he kicked four from the forward pocket in the first quarter against west coast in round 3, 2009.

however, almost every other time he's been sent down there he hasn't got near it - a quarter here, a quarter there. i'm not convinced he can do it.

maybe he should run around with ryan o'keefe? given how dominant o'keefe was today it would be a hugely important job to give him.

I don't remember any quarters here, quarters there. Sometimes he's been sent down there for five minutes or ten at the most, which is hardly long enough to settle into a position.
