Re: Nicky "Elvis" Winmar suffers Heart Attack
I'll bet the editor was a Carlton fan - I recall that meltdown Nicky had against that wop (Anthony Franchina, was it?) It was the end of him as a Saint and, my favourite one at that.
Get well Elvis.
Get well Elvis.

Get well, Nicky!
Yeah, out of all the great moments from his career, they choose that incident to reflect on at the end of the piece. that's awesome, I still have my long sleeve Tooheys jumper with the big number 7 on the back with Nicky's faded autograph from when I was young, helped having a gun follow him in the number I got a few more tight arse years out of it.

MB is an excellent football writer so that makes sense. Maybe Tim Lane was guest editor.Animal Enclosure wrote:Martin Blake just responded to a tweet that i sent him....The last 3 lines were added by an editor & he has asked that they be removed. The Linton Street Flash wrote:And why the hell is this in Marin Blakes article in the age?
"In his last season for St Kilda in 1998, Winmar played 23 games and kicked 16 goals but was criticised during the match against Carlton in round 20 after spending much of the game fighting opponents, finishing with only eight disposals."

The article finishes with that line - So fcuking what, what does that have to do with anything? Disgraceful!

Re: Nicky "Elvis" Winmar suffers Heart Attack
the media pretty much forced our hand after that and used the poor culture myth and jumped on the constant bail outs we did for him. There was a hysteria piece about an altercation he had with some female neighbour that had racist overtones that kept being rehashed. Robert Walls led the charge to sack him, always left a bad taste in my mouth when I hear that negative flog now.Sainternist wrote:Get well, Nicky!

That is a dirty dog act by the Carlton-supporting scumbag of an editor; would we expect anything else? They are desperate, aren't they? And as for Robert Walls, there is nothing of value in that human being. Took the best mark I've ever seen against Essendon at Moorabbin. Was right in front of me on the half forward flank. Still can't believe how high he got. You'll be right Cuz.

Re: Nicky "Elvis" Winmar suffers Heart Attack
The Martin Blake article was only 4 or 5 paragraphs.
The last two were unneccessary.
Cheap shots.
When he could have written about the great skills of the great man over a long period, rather he chose to go down the racial path and then in the final paragraph demean him by mentioning that he (like a great many legends) faded away and finished on an ordinary note.
Then he hides behind the cowards defence that a sub-editor rewrote his article.
I'm not convinced Martin.
If you are for real - then issue a public statement accusing and naming the sub-editor.
Otherwise go back to the rock you crawled out from you cheap sniper

Arguably the most skillful player who ever played in out colours.
The nearest thing to the complete all round player.
Definitely no arguement from me. Also the most electrifying. I used to almost have a heart attack myself every time he went near the ball.
My all time football hero and I'm 2 years older than him. I would walk over a mile of broken glass to watch him play and when he was named out I used to crack it and say "it's almost not worth going now". Lol
My wife works for Qantas and was booking a flight for him a while ago and when he said who he was she said "your my husbands hero" and he actually got all excited and called out to his girl friend in the back ground "I'm this ladies husbands hero".
My wife always deals with celebrities from International actors to rock stars and when she comes home and tells me I don't get too excited but when she told me about Nicky Winmar I was like a starry eyed little kid. "What else did he say"? "Did you get his phone number"? It was almost quite pathetic probably for a guy in my 40s.
No player will ever give me the high and the ride he gave me through his career and he will always hold a special place in my heart.
All the best and get well soon champ I love ya.
Get well Nicky.

Thanks for posting the video. I don't think I'd seen the mark before, but had heard about it a lot.
