Gilbert 194 cm and 90 kg

Post: # 1278410Post fugazi »

If he hits the gym and adds 3 -5 kg muscle....why can't he play FB.

Fast, aggressive, fit.........never seems to be considered, Simpkin, Dempster and Fisher are all 191cm.

Does he get pushed off too easily? Whats the problem?

Nee!

Beau Dowler is a tad taller I think and already has the extra bulk. Has just finished a season playing FB for Sandy. PLayed pretty well I believe. Previoulsy taken as top 10 draft pick by Pelchen for Hawthorn and then he brought him our way. Perhaps that is a plan B or C?

I totally agree that Gilbert should be groomed as a tall defender, in fact I thought it should've happened a few years ago. And Lyon seemed to think he should be groomed as a tall forward, but Gilbert didn't want to. It seems like he's a bit precious and only wants to be a running half back/wingman.

No matter how tall he is, he's still more adept at running off player and chasing them down than he is at following them. Watters was supposedly trying him at FB last year and wound up moving Gilbert out of defence altogether.

Supposedly was trying Stanley back there and that never eventuated. Maybe now that Lee and Hickey are on board we'll try something like that.

Sam Gilbert will not and should not play on tall big forwards.

Lacks upper body strength and plays smaller than he is. Very good below his knees for a tall guy but not particularly good above his head.

You cannot put him in the back half as his disposal by foot is poor and turnovers there kill. He also has been exposed close to goal before
He finally played good footy on the wing, lets be happy with that

I Agree totally, Dowler and J Tippett would be in the mix

FB is a tough position. Cant just try and develop players into a FB position. From what ive seen with Gilbert, it would be a waste of time to develop him.

Played his best footy running off half back in 2010 !
was average in 2011
But encouragingly his second half of 2012 was back to his 2010 form
hopefully he will be good in 2013

I think one on one he gets outbodied to easily !

Yep.
Still waiting for him to fulfill his potential. If he does, and he needs confidence roaring, then we have a beauty. Fingers crossed.

Who would want to be a tall forward in a team coached by Lyon if their name is not Riewoldt or Pavlich?

I'm not sure that Gilbert will ever play tall. He just doesn't play that well as far as over head marking etc. His skill is in moving the ball forward as an oversized running back. He is like a 6'5" Farren or Gram. Simpkin would do better. If Dowler could get a mature rookie list spot he would be worth a punt but hard to see happening and possibly too old already.

I rate Gilbert and Clarke on a par. Both have run and carry, both make blues.

One has shown that he can play at an AA level for a full two years, the other hasn't.

It's not too bad of a comparison. Both rebounding defenders with major clanger issues. Gilbert has more athleticism and agility to get himself out of trouble. And his problem is that he tends to underthink the situation, rather than Raph who overthinks it.
