1913 Grand final footage

Post: # 1290387Post saint1974 »

I was just wondering if anyone knew if any footage from this game existed, I did try you tube but the links didn't show the game, I would dearly love to see any of this game as a relative played in this team and his granddaughter is very ill and would love to surprise her and show her the reason we follow the Saints. Thank you

I do not know if there is any film.
But here is the Football Record from the 1913 Grand Final.

Thanks for that Majority. That's such a great time capsule. Interesting to read the adverts and description of the Prelim Final between the Saints and Fitzroy.

A good read !

I had a good laugh on page 21 ,

Barrackers please note !

It frequently happens that the onlookers are puzzled by the decisions of the umpire ...... etc

Good to see nothing's changed in a hundred years !

And the rule ...
If a player takes a mark, or is awarded
a free kick, and is unable owing to
injury to take his kick, the umpire must
bounce the ball.
' * *

I think that was finally changed in the 80s.
I think there was an incident where in a tight finish a Fitzroy player (Irwin?) was awarded a free kick near goal but was polaxed.
As he was unable to take his (potentially match winning) kick it was bounced and Fitzroy lost the game.
Does anyone remember the details?

That finally led to this ridiculous rule being overturned.

Though the new rule cost us a potential win once at Princes Park when in a game where the last quarter seemed to go on forever as our moderate lead slowly disappeared, I think it was Mil Hanna (the mutant) who got a free but was unable to take the kick, so Tommy Alvin kicked the winning goal (or maybe it was Alvin who got hurt and Hanna that kicked it - time plays tricks with the memory!).
Either way it was a bitter end to a game we should have won to break our Princes Park hoodoo that lasted into the 90s.

We should be retrospectively awarded the premiership...

Yes, because they finished on top, they had a right to a replay,it saddens me think my late great grandfather could have been a priemership player, but missed out due to the rights of the higher team.
Thankyou for the information, my family has the record and the newspaper from that weekend of the final, was hoping against hope there may have been some footage to show my terminally ill mother of her grandfather, thanks was worth a try.

There is film, but there is no information of how to access it. Maybe the MCG Museum.

THE oldest known footage of football being played in Tasmania has been discovered by the National Film and Sound Archive in Melbourne.
The 1911 film features the state final between Cananore and North Launceston at the TCA ground from September 9 that year -- 101 years ago this month.
It is believed the three-minute silent black-and-white footage was shot professionally for a news reel of the day.
The NFSA has held the footage for the past 20 years, but it was only this week that it was positively identified as Tasmanian.
It is the fifth-oldest archival footage of any Australian Rules football action.

Before that, the 1913 VFL grand final between Fitzroy and St Kilda at the MCG was the fifth-oldest known footage of Aussie Rules footy.

What's more, the players in the film are wearing numbers -- on the same day that numbers on guernseys were worn for the first time in the VFL, introducing them for its finals series of 1911.
The VFA had been using numbers on backs for some time before that.
The oldest game caught on film was the VFL grand final between South Melbourne and Carlton at the MCG shot on October 2, 1909.

As fascinating as the footage is sure to be, I don't think I could handle the pain of watching another grand final loss.

And I bet the umpiring was shocking.

Back in 1913, there was only one field umpire for each game.
Jack Elder umpired the 1913 Grand Final.
He was named the Umpire of the century in 1996.

This is what he was reported to say in The Sporting Globe.

"Even in the hardest fought match it is important to remain calm.
Use the whistle only when required.
League football is not a genteel sport for schoolgirls and the term 'rough' is often misapplied.
That borderline between manly vigour and roughhouse tactics is sometimes a little vague.
The term 'rough football' should I think be used sparingly.
'Hard play' differs greatly from the sly bump, the kicks at ankles, the trips and the knees jolted in the backs that constitute rough and illegal play.

Henry (Ivor) Crapp umpired the 1898–1902 and 1904 & 1905 Grand Finals.

---------------------------------------------------------------

They were going to name a medal after Henry.
The medal for the most notorious umpire.

The Crapp Medal.

I wonder if the goal ump M Minahan was an ancestor/rellie of the Saints player Graham Minihan? Minihan is a rather unusual surname. Graham Minihan was a very speedy wing/centre player, who was also very gutsy player ifthe ball was in his vicinity.

Your absence cost us the flag, Dave. Was the reason you stood out due to some petty official giving you grief, as was the way with the saints in those days?

Just wanted an extra ₤20 p.a. and the fourth year on the contract... club officials wouldn't budge. :?

So if the old cliche 'history repeats itself' is true, does that mean BJ after a short spell with the Bummers, will stand out of footy a year to return to the Saints? Don't like the idea of another flag going down the gurgler tho'. :(
