A game plan where you totally dominate a half of football but still only have a modest lead on the scoreboard is a cr@p gameplan.

Remember that H&A game StK v Geel at the G a few years ago under Lyin where we dominated them totally in the first half.
They only scored 1 goal to half time.
20 minutes into the third quarter they still only had one goal.
Bang - Bang - Bang
Three goals to Geelong in three minutes and suddenly they were within a goal.

80 minutes of domination undone in three minutes!!!!!!!!!!

That is the Lyin shyte game plan.
Suck on it Lyin.

different coaches with different strength.
lyon is good with a mature list but hed be terrible with a young developing list.
im happy with watters.
saints just need to focus on improving their list with guys under 23.

So sack Watters in 5 years and bring in Ross again

Lyon has much more coaching experience than Hird but is still stubborn and unimaginative.
How did he let someone on "L" plates overtake him when he was so far ahead?
Glad he's gone.

A modest lead in a grand final is better than losing to an under 20 squad in round 1 rapidly dissending from a force to football irrelevance within 12 months

you don't think the quality of the list had anything to do with that?

We saw that game so many times !
10 mins in the third , I said to the people i watched it with " I bet essendon get level or just in front , but then freo will win it "
That's what we did , and i laughed each time they kicked a point in the last .
I know we used to win allot but it was so frustrating !
Last week when we were 10 points down , 20 minutes into the last quarter , I knew we wouldn't win . I wasn't happy but I was also quite relaxed !
Lyon's style gave me allot of grey hairs .

Essendon remains Lyons cryptonite.

Why don't all teams play like that, take risk, break lines....it makes that style look ordinary?

Just remind me please because I have a bad memory...How did RL go in his last year at St.Kilda?

I've got another interesting question to pose to you...How do you think RL would go with that under 20 squad if he was to take over coaching them right now and if he had 4 or 5 years to work with the GC Suns?

See where I'm going here...apart from the various components of a footy club that all need to work well together, we all know the list is the key. Everything starts with a blueprint and the cattle either has what it takes or they don't.

All things being equal and let's assume your hero was still at our football club....How far do you think he'd go with the Saints team of 2013? We've got the oldest list at the moment and guys like Milne, Lenny, Roo, Kosi, Blake and a few others have already played their best footy.

The gallant Saints team that made it to the '09 and '10 GF's was mainly put together before RL arrived. They matured and got a taste of September action and made mistakes before he arrived. We had a team that many experts were predicting was in a premiership window. How many coaches pick up a squad of the caliber of Saints circa 2006/7?

RL had minimal input in building the team, but his admirers believe he was the inspiration and the messiah that gave us a chance to win a second flag. Bullldust!!! It was RL's gameplan that failed. It was RL's philosophy on footy that failed and RL's coaching that failed. I hope the pr1ck is stubborn enough not to learn from his mistakes

It's Rossie you're talking about and if anyone is capable of such monumental arrogance it is he.

Very good post Scollop. Though the topic has been done to death on this board and should be allowed to die a natural death, you said it beautifully and I agree.

Any game where Essendon win is puke-worthy.

If you're talking about 2010, we actually won that game by 24 Pts then beat the Cats again in the QF.

I don't think Lyon has ever coached a winning team against Essendon

Essendon just are frenetic, Ross' measured approach falls down when the rigid structures don't have time to set up. His GP works on 90% of the comp just not the super quick teams.

Lyon could have stayed at StK and recruited and developed for a next crack at a flag, but in reality he hasn't got the skills other than toughening up a good team, and implementing a one-dimensional game plan. Premierships=0

Well there was the last game of 2008, but I think that was only a narrow win.

Actually, no one knows if he is capable of developing a team from scratch as he hasn't had the chance...

People conveniently forget that he was asking StKilda for a secure long term deal, the club didn't really want to offer that, freo did. He knew we needed to re-build & was up for the challenge, but similar to Goddard, we appeared to not want him that much, someone else did.

Yes....We missed our opportunities!!

In last nights presser I think Rossco used the phrase 'we learn from this' and I think he said 'we're in this together' once, but he sat there squirming and defiant and said 'we missed our opportunities' 7 or 8 times

I thought it was fitting that Duffields kick did a legbreak with a minute to go and also RL's fluffer boy was involved in the last 10 sec and again had no impact on an outcome of a match...the karma bus left a few tyre tracks on Tossco last night
