Whilst I may agree with P66 that soft players get short shrift in the AFL and soon get the chop, there is a clear difference between the fearless few (Hayes, Selwood etc), the courageous many who when it is their turn to go do not squib, and the few who have learnt how to position themselves so that time rarely comes. I suspect that the game has gone past this latter type (Jason Gram the classic exponent). The game is so quick, the player numbers around the ball so many, that the true outside player unless they are of exceptional speed and evasiveness as in a Jetta, will not cut it. Name a Geelong player you would call an outside runner.

Feels like a Collingwood fan site. The softer players are coming back into fashion. Breakneck pace actually limits the need for bash and crash unskilled footy.

Good teams never need much contest once in possession. hawks, Essendon, Richmond etc are going to flick it off to the next runner before anyone gets to lay a tackle on them.

In their ideal game they have a strong ruck tapping directly to a strong mid who will dish off quickly to the outside runners who will never be touched before the ball goes forward.

True but Sydney has a more even spread of it than the Hawks who have a few tough guys but plenty of soft cocks that use the ball well.
