Stupid question
Why don't the saints have players singing the song the first time in the middle of the circle and cop the old water treatment.

Re: Stupid question
Not sure. We've only won 2 games this year so it's a rather small sample set.luc1966 wrote:Why don't the saints have players singing the song the first time in the middle of the circle and cop the old water treatment.

Re: Stupid question
Why just follow the mob? Can't the Saints celebrate they way they prefer?
Actually the Saints were and have been leaders in rituals.......... the first to link arms at the singing of the National Anthem on GF day................. hark back to when Stan Alves coach at 1997 GF.
We started this ritual during that finals period (that most clubs now adopt) after Alves had introduced a group of New Zealand All Black Rugby team to the players at training who taught them the Harka (? spelling). The NZ All Blacks used to link arms then prior to major rugby tournaments for the anthem and the Saints did it that GF, they may have even done it in the semi and prelim final. Then other AFL sides adopted this arm linking stance. now Saints don't do it.
When it comes to rituals, fashion your own, don't just be herd like and follow the mob IMHO

Re: Stupid question
Hey Loris I remember the boys linking arms for the anthem during the 97 GF. If my memory serves me correctly Stan Alves came up with the idea as a way to combat nerves and again from memory if you look our boys during that anthem they looked like they would fall over if they let go of each others arms because they were so (visibly) nervous .
Back on topic...I'm glad we don't do the old put the new boys in the middle thing. I always cringe when I watch that happening because usually the poor sucker(s) look like they are hating it.

Re: Stupid question
i think our boys prefer to go down the path of the more civilised jumper presentation before the game to the guys playing their first game ...
i dont think Freo do the whole powerade shower either so maybe its a left over thing from the Ross Lyon era ....
with the linking of the arms thing i think after 1997 it was seen as a bad omen for the boys to link arms

Re: Stupid question
Puerile ritual that schoolboys abandoned many years ago, along with other activities in the showers.
I'm glad our club has more class than that.

Re: Stupid question
It was abandoned at the same time as free scarves for members were ditched to save money.
Lyon took it one step further by not playing any new players just in case there was a Gatorade celebration post match.
