Guard of honour - Melbourne??

Post: # 1350315Post Heidelberg_Saint »

What's the protocol on opposition team giving a guard of honour? I expected Melbourne players to line up last night as our milestone players were chaired off the ground, only they were nowhere to be seen. Is it only offered for retiring players??

Think the players were enjoying getting clapped off the ground too much to worry about staying on the ground.

We'll remember that when Sylvia retires!

If others don't do it for us, we shouldn't complain.

It should only be applauded when others DO do it.

It's a nice gesture but never mandatory.

Who wants a guard of honour from such a dogshit team like Melbourne anyway?

Can't really remember one since Harvey- he seemed to be getting one every week near the end.

Didn't we just give one to Boomer Harvey?

That was for 350 and I think that's the benchmark.

You shouldn't do it after a loss. We should't have done it for Boomer when we lost to North Melbourne.
It is meant to hurt losing a game, just get off the ground rather than standing around applauding the opposition.
I am all for sportsmanship and stuff but it needs to hurt more when we lose! I don't know, but that's how I feel about it!

When Harvey played his first game in 1988, I was a 12yo wearing short pants and struggling with my readin', writin' and 'rithmetic in grade eight. Now, I'm a father of three and a retired AFL player. And he's still going. Amazing! - Michael Voss

It is simply not appropriate for 250 games. That is too low a benchmark.

350 or players retiring thereabouts.
