Problem running out games
I was listening to Mark Fine on SEN (fanatical Saints man) a couple of weeks ago and he was really criticising the Saints' recruitment of Bill Davoren (our fitness and conditioning coach) from the Western Bulldogs saying that while he was at the Doggies, they couldn't run out games and now the same thing is happening to us.
There may be something in that....our last quarters are usually sub standard but I'm not sure if we blame the fitness coach or whether it's the fact that we're playing so many kids and so it's natural that they'll run out of puff as they don't have the tank yet........may be a combination of both.

Hopefully at review time, the bloke will get the flick.
A real Sainter will pledge allegiance to the ❤ and despise the Pies, the Blues, and the Injectors.

I think it's a combo of both. But have really struggled in last quarters this year! But would like a new fitness guru certainly.

Re: Problem running out games
we have young fellas who will always run out of puff in the team its not exactly time to be heading to the chopping block on people our boys are playing as expected to be playing considering their age ... we need to stop looking for boogy men to blame things on and just accept its going to take a little while to get games into the kids before we see some consistant performances ...
lets not follow the st kilda of old of sack first ask questions later method ...
kids cant dominate this game for long periods like they used to the game has changed the fitness required cannot be expected of a kid still growing ...

Re: Problem running out games
Sorry I disagree with Finey big time on this.
I was watching the Port v Bombers games. And they have 10-12 middle sized blokes who are basically all midfielders. They always have 3 or 4 or 5 blokes at the contest. The key in this day and age is to outnumber the opposition at the contest when you can. Then if numbers are even - well then it comes down to winning contested ball and skill and your key fwds. We simply dont have enough of the 'right type' of player to compete with those sides. I see it is a list balance issue.
We have all these mid sized defenders - who arent really running players and are quite one dimensional - they are limited to only being mid sized defenders.
Every side needs 2 or 3 of these types but we seem to have 5 or 6.
Then small fwds - no side has more then one 'specialist' fwd who cant play midfield for at least a few minutes a quarter. This is often a a criticism of Betts and Gartlett at the Blues. They dont have enough guys who can go through the middle.
We have 3!
Now lets remove 1 or 2 of those and replace with someone more versatile and then remove 3 mid sized defenders and replace them with 2 mids and a key defender (so we dont always have to double team the opposition talls) and all of a sudden we have 3 more blokes capable of playing as a mid. That means a shared load for the current mids and therefore less fatigue and more running power for longer.
Just putting something down to one coach - like if we change that coach wed all of sudden be good is major simplicity (but fans love it because it gives them hope of some dramatic rise with one simple change).

we need to stop looking for some simple boogie man to blame.
our issues are club wide and squad wide. there is no easy simple solution that will see us up the top in 5 minutes. people need to prepare for the long hual and not look for some easy person to blame and some quick fix.
lets take a deep breath - and enjoy watching our kids emerge into a new saints side. Dont get too hung up on the scoreboard.
I know its an emotional game..

Finey is like a mentally challenged Alan Jones who has divisive opinions on sport. He is a shock jock and he deliberately revs the imbeciles up. He gets them boiling then calls them idiots and hangs up when they don't respond appropriately. When you are playing kids they fade due to a lack of physical maturity- Essendon were about 4 years into a rebuild and they needed drugs to get through it.

I cant help but agree with you re Finey. I used to like listening to him however, I reckon it has all gone to his head a bit. It kind of irks me that he tries so hard not to be pro stkilda that he is actually anti st kilda. There is a guy on after midnight Darren I think is his name. He supports the saints, but he is never anti and does let people speak. Finey lets other teams supporters ring and talk about the umpiring, but hangs up if a saints person rings to talk about umpires. A saints fan rang a couple of months ago and had some interesting facts and figures on umpiring, but we didnt get to hear him out. I listen cos I like to hear what supporters have to say, all supporters not just saints supporters. Some have really interesting things to say.gringo wrote:Finey is like a mentally challenged Alan Jones who has divisive opinions on sport. Yeah agree- the supporters voices help you deal with the let down or celebrate the wins.
Re: Problem running out games
if our young guys can continue to play with the intensity they put in to the first half against Freo - i will not mind if they run out of puff in the last over the rest of this year - fitness is something that can be trained into our players - willingness/commitment to go in hard and extert continual pressue is what will matter in long run

Re: Problem running out games
very true- I want us to struggle this year so we make the most of being at the bottom of the ladder but at least offer some future hope. That was the most satisfying 30 point loss I have watched because there was a good portion of the game you couldn't help have pride in the performance the kids particularly put in.Hoges wrote:if our young guys can continue to play with the intensity they put in to the first half against Freo - i will not mind if they run out of puff in the last over the rest of this year - fitness is something that can be trained into our players - willingness/commitment to go in hard and extert continual pressue is what will matter in long run

I think that's the point Con; it's about being able to get to enough contests. As our blokes blow up, they don't get to the next contest and the other mob is away.Con Gorozidis wrote:I was watching the Port v Bombers games. 'Yeah so we took all of those but ill tell you this - no one concedes that anyone at this club injected extract from wooly mammoth testicle and even if some of our older players did give it a go no one can say that it was performance enhancing because there were so many other substances involved it is impossible to prove or isolate and link any drug with performance so we are most certainly innocent'dragit wrote:needs more AOD 9406, hexarelin, thymosin, dugong sphincter, snow leopard penis

In breaking news, Jab Watson has recovered from a broken collar bone in remarkable time. He trained strongly just two days after the match and is declared a certainty to play this weekend.
*Evans refused to confirm or deny whether stem cell/plutonium therapy impacted the speed of his recovery, but if it did and it is illegal, then everyone should speak to Stephen Dank… his cat ate a letter that had wasada printed at the top.
