Saints rising star history - not good!

Post: # 1367970Post Bushman »

It is a massive worry that in the past 10 years we have had 4 rising star moninations; Raph 2005, Gilbert 2007, Geary 2009 and Steven 2011, on simple Maths over the time the Saints have had 1.7% of nominations! Last year and this year to a greater extent year we have played the kids and have none. This is an abysmal record by any measure and does not bode well for our future. At the moment we have one kid in Steven who could be a star, Armo is good but will not be great. Other than that we are running on vapour and praying that kids picked in the 20's, 30's and 40's will be our future.

Pelican's performance in the next two drafts will shape our team for the next 10 years - god I hope he get's it right.

It hasn't been good but you left out at least one. Siposs last year.

Not a good history of finding and developing talented kids- I was hoping this year that one of the up and coming brigade would put in a really good game in the seniors and get in the votes, but it's not looking good.

Pelchen isn't a recruiter either.

Our lack of nominees probably has something to with the fact that not many kids could break into the side between 2008 and 2011. By the time guys like Armitage, McEvoy, Geary, Simpkin etc were playing well, they were too old to be nominated. It's all about timing.

There have been players nominated after one good game who haven't racked up 10 career games yet, while someone like Jack Newnes has been overlooked.

You would think that Newnes has ticked more boxes than Marly Williams just on stats alone from the weekend Newnes has him covered against far better opponents.

Well if we had a decent kid they would have made the side ahead of Mini and Eddy back then.... that's for shizzle. e.g Varcoe was 21 in 2009.

Any way you slice it or dice it it is an abysmal record.
Why do you think we are 3rd bottom? Not by accident.
We are paying the piper for our abysmal recruitment and development from 2006-2010.

I'm surprised some people are so surprised we are where we are.

I surprise that you have only become aware of this in the last few weeks. Its your new hobby horse. it was obvious at least 3 years ago.

I'm far from surprised, but I don't think rising star nominations are an accurate indication of how well a club is rebuilding. I bet Melbourne have had more nominees in the last five years than many other clubs.

Melbournes woes are partly caused by a who lot of players who started their careers really well but fell away dramatically. cale Morton a textbook example, Gysberts another.

Would be great to have a few more nominations but they have to go with it. Geary and Siposs were both dropped 2 weeks after their nominations..and Raph and Gilbo werent/arent exactly superstars. Jack looks like the only one who will go on and become a genuine A lister

Dont forget we had the winner of the Rising Star award in 2001 and 2002. I dont think any other club has done it in consecetive years.

..... and 7/8 years later we made 2s GF in a row when our core group of guns were 25-27yo.

Now when we have noone any good 25-27yo we are 3rd bottom

It aint rocket science to see whats going on.

Did anyone see the graphic on FC last night where Hutchie showed the list of good players the Swans, Cats and hawks have under 26?

They have PLENTY.

No good squealing about our Coach. We need to look at the core problems in our list. There is no easy fix to the Saints current situation.

Wright should have nominated early in year and Newnes last week but Saints are not the media darlings.
Brisbane have 2 poor weeks with Umpires next minute they get press about it ,saying they are 3rd last ,no guess's who is last
Not a word from press gallery but think most supporters want recognition within the club on rising star anyway
