P66 has continued to make anm excellent point which almost everyone just glosses over because it doesn't suit their agenda. HAVE A LOOK AT BRISBANE'S LIST THIS YEAR. Check out who wants to leave. It's nearly 5x more than any other club. Almost every time the reason given is homesickness. The extra cash to retain players is extremely relevant. No coincidence that Brisbane are struggling to keep players since this allowance was removed from them.

people argue that we came runners up twice and lost players due to salary cap squeeze. Poor management! Hawks are losing Buddy, but were still able to offer him upwards of a million. There were way too many blokes on our list that were overpaid. Gram and Kosi were classic examples. Cats lost Ablett in the last 7 years and Mumford, but too many others. Good clubs manage this situation. If we had somehow jagged a flag or two in the past 10 years I'm tipping that none of could care less about Sydney. Hawks have poached Gibson, Burgoyne, Dunstan, and a lesser extent Lake and Hale. Good luck to them - but don't sook when it happens to you I say.

Just because ppl like Eddie make a lot of noise about it doesn't make it right. Ppl should actually check out how the allowance works before jumping up and down.

Did people want to leave Brisbane 1999-2006 while lethal was there.... Again leadership will be followed...

Will there be an exodus out of Melbourne now, because if Neeld were still coach, Maloney would be followed by 6-8

Brisbane is losing players because Joel Platful has one two B&Fs no slight on him, they are just crap and run poorly... Employees will flee a garbage organisation....

They wanted Roos.... Melbourne got him...

How many going to flee Freo ATM, how man Port.... People are flooding to the bloods?!

And yes,

If we Jagged a flag t would appease a bit... But when you win a flag, it's like the first Million.... R1 next year it's over and all you want is another....

The greatest clubs aspire to win every year.... The battle to remain on top is more critical than getting to the top fleetingly

Good post I reckon Mart. Good management of any organisation is the key. People are 'homesick' in Brisbane because the club's being badly run. If it's just about homesickness Moods, how come there hasn't been an exodus from Sydney and Brisbane in past years? Sure you might lose one or two because of it form time to time, but not a huge chunk of your list at one time.

I fail to see how a cost of living allowance would cure home sickness for these young Brisbane players.

Polec, Karnezis, Yeo, Longer, Docherty… what kind of wages are we talking? 120K - 250K PA salaries? You think that if Brisbane could offer them 135k - 275K instead that they would stay? Complete bulls*** IMO. They want out for whatever reason and the extra coin would not change a thing.

I'm not going to feel sorry for a team that has recently won 3 premierships in a row when I haven't seen one in my entire life.

Brisbane completely f***ed up their cap via wonder boy Voss, but have still been able to attract plenty of mature talent.

Players get home sick from every club, at least if someone wants to return to Queensland there are only 2 clubs fighting over him, unlike the frenzy of a returning Victorian player.

By all means pump money into these interstate teams recruiting departments and facilities, but having a higher salary cap for players is ridiculous and the concept will rightly be abolished soon.

Honestly - how is that even relevant? We had several chances to win flags in the last few years and we stuffed them up. Is that Sydney's fault as well? It's not like the AFL are denying us a chance to win a flag. We don't want to be spoon fed a flag do we? Are you saying you WOULD feel sorry for the Swans if we have of won a couple of flags in the last couple of years? I doubt it.

Do you honestly believe that it's easier to retain players in Sydney than it is in Melbourne? Of course it's not. Why do you think WC and Adelaide will ALWAYS pick the home-grown player ahead of an interstate one if they are anywhere near comparable in ability? I personally think that it takes far more than a 10% pay rise to keep a player at a club, so in a sense I agree with you. If that's the case though, why are we even arguing about it? Doesn't make a shred of difference apparently. Players aren't going there for the extra cash. You guys are saying as much yourselves. It's a proven well run club away from the media spotlight. If players were going for the money they would all be lining up at GWS. It's not a cost of living allowance - it's a player retention allowance. They just changed the name for political reasons. We got Dempster and Schneider a few years back because they couldn't squeeze them all in. I hate this free vtrade thing. It's player driven. I hate the thought that the comp will become like the EPL - but I think we're all just going to have to get used to it.

It's relevant because I have recently watched 5 premierships won by 2 teams, chocked full of talent that other clubs just aren't legally permitted to assemble.

If they have to spend some time on the bottom like the poor clubs, so be it, I couldn't give a s***.

I think we agree, players aren't wanting out of Brisbane because their salary cap isn't big enough, so it's not even relevant. They don't need a bigger cap and neither do Sydney, it's a ridiculous, unfair advantage, evidenced by 5 recent premierships.

Grant Thomas and Butterss really went for it twelve years ago and got a lot of talent to the club. Time to ramp it up again Prez.

Interesting article by Jake Niall in 'The Age'.

Here :

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/s ... 2uque.html

Don't really agree with or care about what he's written with regard to Buddy not going to GWS.

But the info about the Swans having room under their salary cap is interesting. If they've managed their cap well enough and genuinely have room without leaning heavily on the COLA, then fair enough. Well played to them then. Whether it will bite them on the arse down the track remains to be seen. Giving Buddy a deal until he's 36. It's a big risk, it's looks to me like he's already past his peak and not so dominant as he was in the past two years.

The best deal a player has struck in history, surely? and then some?

Can't help but think he isn't nearly worth it. Maybe a 24 year old Ablett Jnr. Maybe a 21 year old Riewoldt.

Franklin is very entertaining, but doesn't seem nearly as imposing as he use to be.

First of all, greatings from Los Angeles, we are about to head off to Disneyland. As for the salary cap, it is officially a farce. The comp is starting to remind me of Animal Farm "all clubs are equal, but some are more equal rhan others". The only fair thing to do if Sydney needs extra money is to raise the other 17 clubs cap to the same level.

Except for the sanity nothing much has been lost.

No way a 21 year Riewoldt, (either Riewoldt).
Our Riewoldt could not kick straight then and he can't kick straight now.
A goal is worth 6 times the value of a behind.

Maybe a 21 year Lockett but maintaining our Riewoldt's level of fitness throughout his career.
Imagine how many more games and premierships the Saints would have won if our Riewoldt had Lockett's kicking accuracy.
Even more if Lockett had our Riewoldt's fitness.
What a thought, an overweight Lockett kicked 70 goals in only 9 consecutive matches, double teamed and with another opposition player filling the hole into which he would need to lead.

Franklin can't kick straight either so as a player he ain't worth it.
BUT I think Sydney place a lot of value on Franklin for his marketing power - providing publicity and delivering club sponsorship in the Sydney market.

Demetriou is determined to pursue the Sydney market.
He still thinks the NRL is vulnerable because they can't get large crowds.
He wants to convince Sydney schools to switch to Aussie Rules.
For that the AFL needs publicity and Franklin may provide that.
He would have hoped Franklin would go to GWS.
He will tut, tut, tut, Sydney Swans but will take no action.

Master tradin by the red and white!
Just echoing KB Sydney appear to c o n s i s t e n t l y do v. well with their 'Long Term' trading.

Like a few others i've been amazed @ the swans sudden pounce on bud and whats more controling the media access to suit their own planning - brillient!

Like learning from the cats and taking the idea of a junior player academy seriously our St. Kilda Football Club can learn from what Sydney have achieved tradin their way to success. I hope to heck our new board is up to the challenge.
Hope the Pelican and co. have similar plans on line right now.

Any COLA should at least be distributed proportionally (and controlled externally) to every player rather than effectively pooled to buy extra players.

Apparently it's currently only enforceable for players paid the base rate ($70k + $7k allowance).

What a farce.
