They could've grabbed him as a delisted free agent all this time, so he won't go in the PSD, could easily go pick 1 of the rookie draft though, as for plan B, we have all discussed Battersby, Templeton etc.ace wrote:What is plan B.
GWS is committed to take Jed Lamb in the pre season draft ahead of the rookie draft.
But because St Kilda has not delisted a player to activate a Pre Season draft pick.
GWS has two chances to take Weller if they choose.
They could use a second pre season draft pick or they could use their no 1 pick in the rookie draft.
Either option may surprise St Kilda.
It has shades of the late 1990s when Timmy Watson trained with St Kilda with the intention of making a comeback for a season or two before taking over as coach.
Everyoe knew St Kilda was plaannig to take Watson BUT
Shock horror, evil Sheedy sprung a surprise and used a pick ahead of St Kilda to redraft him to Essendon.
If GWS grabs Weller who will St Kilda pick instead.

The way I see it, it could've helped in our negotiations, considering before Longer, we only had Hickey, Stanley & Pierce to play ruck. So by showing interest in Jolly, our immediate ruck stocks didn't look so thin and we didn't look so desperate. I think its a legitimate post to question whether the Jolly interest actually helped us nab Longerdefacto wrote:i agree, but i still dont understand how it managed to "help get the longer deal over the line"defacto wrote:how would it have helped to get the longer deal over the line?st_Trav_ofWA wrote:am i the only one who thinks that our "interest" in jolly was only to act as smoke to help get the longer deal over the line ???

In any negotiation, it helps to have a fallback option. (Known as a BATNA in the theory.) If you don't have a fallback option then you can easily get shafted by a negotiator who keeps raising their price. But with another option, they can only raise their price as high as the value of the option (plus the difference in value between them).defacto wrote:how would it have helped to get the longer deal over the line?st_Trav_ofWA wrote:am i the only one who thinks that our "interest" in jolly was only to act as smoke to help get the longer deal over the line ???

Yep, essentially: "we don't need him that badly because we can just get Jolly otherwise, so we won't be paying too much."skeptic wrote:so ur saying it helped us in the sense that we used him as leverage to highlight that we didn't need Longer that badly

Just one pick in the PSD - Jed Lamb to GWS.
So all these very talented kids are still available...
There's something very alluring about the rookie draft. It really is a free hit - you lose nothing if it doesn't work, but what you potentially gain is huge.
Added to that is the knowledge that you're also paying very little to these guys. For a club like ours, it's an invaluable tool.

This has been an excellent trade-national draft-rookie draft period for the Saints.
We've completely rejuvenated our list. Great signs for the future.

Re: Rookie Draft 27/11/13 - Official discussion thread
Defacto as mentioned by others the intrest in Jolly helped us with longer in the fact we were not seen as desperate for him ... if we look at the trade period previous to this we were soo bitterly desperate for Brown we were willing to part with a huge amount just to get our man everyone knew we were desperate as we had no other option to fill that hole hence WCE playing hard ball on it , after all they are not in the business of making our team stronger unless it makes them signifigantly stronger ...
with the Longer deal we had just shipped off our number 1 ruck , questions were asked how we could cover for that and was Hickey ready to take on the ruck by himself ... we put up the Jolly option as a viable solution to the ruck problem while we went into the negotiation for Longer , we were not desperate we wanted Longer no doubt but it was not a case of Longer or bust as it was with brown .. in the end we were able to snare Longer for a fair deal instead of having to pay overs for him ...

Tom Ledger finds himself without a home for 2014, likewise Darren Jolly, Mitch Thorp and a few others of note.
Ahmad Saad continues to train with us, which is good news. I'm sure we'll consider him for 2015 as his ban expires.

...let's just say it was about time.savatage wrote:Absolutely killed it this year!evertonfc wrote:This has been an excellent trade-national draft-rookie draft period for the Saints.
We've completely rejuvenated our list. Great signs for the future.
But I felt we plugged enough games into the bottom half of the list last season to ensure they would be battle-ready for 2014.
Add those kids to our trades, and we have a decent 22 that will perform very strongly (in consideration of what our ultimate aim is).
If we can get another 10+ games through Bruce, Dunstan, Billings and Acres, and hopefully 5+ games through Weller and Templeton, it'll be a great development season, with the prospect of another strong year of picks in 2014.
All things being equal, we'll have completely turned over our list in that time with a mixture of elite talent and competitive prospects.
Feel we're a bit light on for long-term top-quality KPP forwards but have a feeling we'll see some come onto the open market in coming years. There's no way GWS will be able to keep FOUR first-round power forwards on their list, for example.
Great time to be a Saints' fan, IMO.
