Our salary cap/TPP
I had to start a negative thread.....But...
If you have to pay 95% of your SC I am just wondering who the hell we are paying given no NDS, Macca or BJ.
I guess it is something like this (in order)
Roo - an absolute shedload
Joey - see above
Hayes - probably still on good coin
Fisher - see above
Schneider - see above
Armo - must be on massive coin
Steven - must have got a big increase?
Geary - must be the best paid GOP in the AFL
Gilbo - must be on good coin
Dempster - must be on good coin
Gwilt - see above
Jones - see above
Hickey - moved clubs so must have come over on decent coin/rise
Savage - see above
Delaney - see above
Longer - must have got a pay rise to cross clubs
Bruce - must have got a pay rise
Ray - see Geary
Stanley - seems to have got himself a decent contract
Roberton - probably got a decent deal after last year (deservedly so)
Then after that - I assume everyone else is on peanuts.

Re: Our salary cap/TPP
The last few years we've had players like hayes and roo on the veteran's list
I would be amazed if we had anyone on it this year
If we do , we've got allot of very ordinary players on big bucks !!!

Agree. With not vet players and dropping 5% we probably are paying over one million less than 2 years ago.

Re: Our salary cap/TPP
I guess the strategy is off load big players of worth and get draft picks.
This reduces the performance of the team short term generating more draft picks.
Use the room in the cap to hit the free agency market. Something not around during Hawthorn's rise.
Maybe we are just front paying everyone right now to meet the limits. Even more room next couple of years!!!!

They might be.Red wrote:Maybe they are front loading some contracts
But that can back-fire too. We did it with Luke Ball..carried him with his injuries with the hope that we would gain the benefit later in his career.
When he plateaued all tat past front end loading counted for squat. All that front end loaded cash wasted.

Re: Our salary cap/TPP
Reality is that when you are crap....that a lot players will get money that they really do not deserve due to the cap.Con Gorozidis wrote:I had to start a negative thread.....But...

.
There will be some tinkering though, so that in several years there is more cash to pay whomever wil be are better players then:
* sign on bonus for players from other clubs - ie say Longer in particular..and less so for others as we basically had no real stars recruited. Savage will have gained a healthy upgrade on his Hawks paycheck.
* with say Roo and Joey who will play for more years...they will be getting more now
* front end loading for some of better joining players..
* hell, front end loading even for some of the guys that will not make it (ie pay 6, when you know that in years that only half will be there still)

Re: Our salary cap/TPP
It's a good point you make. With this 95% minimum allowance there's not much chance of getting rewarded when a lot of average players are getting paid well.
I remember someone pointed out a while ago that a decent Geelong/Hawthorn player is probably getting the same as what a s*** player from Melbourne was getting.

Re: Our salary cap/TPP
Remember that a club doesn't have to use the veterans list so the real max TPP is actually around 105+%. Which, as p66 states means that we probably have around 10% of the cap spare... which is around $1m. Easily enough for an elite free agent, or more likely two B+ players at the end of 2015/2016.
Hird... The unflushable one is now... just a turd...

I expect we will try to land a big name free agent this year just as a statement and offer a bit of hope.
Re: Our salary cap/TPP
It's an interesting thought. Looks to me that it's going to be hard to snare another first round draft pick because we don't have any talent to trade out. But we have plenty of salary cap space so it might make sense to use some of that on a free agent - if they're young enough. Bryce Gibbs is the youngest of them so he'd start to look pretty attractive, provides outside run and skill that we don't have heaps of. Not sure who else we'd consider: Frawley maybe, Higgins, Leigh Adams? Garrick Ibbotson? Not a lot of others who look good enough and young enough to me.gringo wrote:I expect we will try to land a big name free agent this year just as a statement and offer a bit of hope.
