Saintsational Fan Forum - A passionate community of St Kilda Football Club fans discussing news, history, players, trade rumours, results, AFL stats and more.
To manage my expectations whenever I read a forum (of any kind, not just here), my default assumption is that most other posters are dumb 14 year old morons.
The above 2 posts gladden my heart by telling me this is not always the case.
Best player in the team until the Tasmanians arrived in 62/3
At 26 he walked away because Stewart became the Centreman?!
Was he unhappy that he was no longer the best player.... Was he (or Stewart) unable to co-exist? ..... Were players in that era so pigeon holed that they only played one position?
If he played in 65 we would have won probably
If Stewart played in 71 we would have won definitely
Such a great player only to play 100 games and walk away at 26... Interesting... Sad IMO
Like MacIntosh, Gleeson, Lockett, McAdam and so many others
That if only they didn't either have their career cut short, or walked away... We would have won multiple flags

He was an absolute star... Dual B&F
Big V Centreman

Remember as a young kid watching Lance play at the Junction Oval. Bloody shame he left the Club when he did. From memory I think he went to play in Wangaratta (Rovers) after he left the Saints or that may have been where he was recruited from, too long ago
Bill Stephenson was also an interesting story.
A tragic story.
Only played 88 games.
Was just approaching his peak form.
In 1962 he was just about the hottest name in the VFL averaging 5 goals a game in the first 4 rounds.
Then he "did his knee".
Played another 11 games for just 23 goals (including a haul of 7 in a memorable win over Collingwood to kick off the 64 season).
But was never the same player.
Walked (or limped) away from the game in 64 at the age of just 27 years of age.
Like Oswald he should have been part of an all-conquering StKilda side that should have dominated the mid-sixties.
