A List of Talls

Post: # 1464225Post BigMart »

I think we are possibly 3 or 4 talls off a future side.... We need to find 2 IMO along with our likely FRP

The first pick in the Pre Season draft is the big pull, with a senior opportunity and a bit of a pay rise?

They only have to look at Luke Delaney, Billy Longer and Josh Bruce to see what opportunity can bring.... If they have some credits they might attract a fair wage.
We need to replace Nick Riewoldt and your Key fwds need to be players if your going to be a serious side

We also need another Key defender/third back to replace Sam and Sean

I have looked at three categories

1/ high profile, but disgruntled or under performing for some reason. Need to open the cheque book
2/ underrated
3/ not getting enough opportunity

Josh Jenkins 25, 198, 104, 34
Jake Carlisle 22, 200, 98, 58
Tayte Pears 24, 192, 92, 68
Tom Campbell 22, 201, 104, 15
Ayce Cordy 23, 202, 99, 19
Liam Jones 23, 197, 97, 63
Sam Reid 22, 196, 96, 61
Tim Membrey 19, 188, 89, 0
David Astbury 23, 195, 96, 37
Jack Riewoldt 25, 195, 94, 143
Tyrone Vickory 23, 200, 97, 81
Todd Elton 21, 197, 97, 1
Liam McBean 19, 202, 86, 0
John Butcher 22, 197, 93, 23
Majak Daw 23, 195, 97, 10
Cameron Delaney 21, 194, 91, 6
Jack Watts 23, 196, 88, 82
James Frawley 25, 193, 94, 123
Tim O'Brien 20, 193, 81, 2
Daniel Gorringe 21, 200, 96, 17
Zac Clarke 24, 203, 97, 59
Levi Casboult 24, 199, 100, 22
Sam Frost 20, 194, 88, 13
Kristian Jacksh 19, 195, 84, 2
Cameron McCarthy 19, 195, 83
Jon Patton 21, 197, 100, 19

Any worth considering? Some definitely raise my eyebrows??

Carlisle will be hard to get especially if Hird returns.

Target uncontracted/surplus talls.

Jacksh I feel wont be at GWS next year. Very gettable.

Reid may be floated by Sydney to ease their cap.

Butcher I've always liked. He's a contested marking beast. Below average kick though. Stanley could be involved in the trade.

Weird that the dogs have Campbell jones and Cordy all in and out of the side and they crying for key forwards. I realise jones has played more then not. Also wasn't jones father or gfather a saint

I'd seriously look at Carlisle... He'd be my #1 target

Wouldn't classify Watts as a tall, doesn't play tall.

Sam Reid is surely gettable.

With what pick? i think we can forget the PSD. Clubs dont really use that anymore to get good players.

Sam Reid I would rate currently as a good player, not a great player so I wouldn't be parting with a 1st rounder but perhaps something can be done with our 2nd round pick. This also is a bit of an unknown given Pelchan's penchant for trading those picks for players and picks (prior to last year).

Why don't we use the pre season pick?

P66
You are right that clubs haven't used it lately. But failed to mention why?

First reason
Last two seasons most afl players that have moved to club of choice, through being a free agent rather than the Pre Season Draft?
Roberton is one example, but there are also the gun examples.
Second reason
Clubs are smarter now. After example s like Nick Steven... Where a club lost an absolute gun for zero ... They have been willing to lose a lot to gain a little... Rather than nothing as we did with Ball. Who went in the ND with a price on his head.
Examples
We were not happy with 43 for Cripps or 37 for Lynch but accepted they wanted to leave and did the deal

Brisbane were livid with the Polec for 21 and Longer for 25 .... From picks 5&8 but accepted them.

So clubs do not hold the whip hand with disgruntled or out of contract players.

Yes I didnt mention why they dont use it but have previously. The main reason now is that you get a bad reputation as a club because you wont deal. Sydney were livid when GWS or was it GC wouldnt deal over Lamb and he aint no star. it will continue to be a very poor drafting tool as it has been now for a few years.

Probably some silly legal reason about restraint of trade. I totally agree its now a waste of time.

GWS used it effectively to get highly rated Jed Lamb last year. I do agree though it doesn't get used as much as it use to.

Pre Season draft obviously has a function. After second list lodgements there are players training at clubs or uncontracted players still to be listed as decisions have not been made in November.

Second chance onto a senior list or chance to move to club of choice.

Also
Who cares what other clubs think, we are in the business of putting together the best list we can.
Goddard was head hunted from us, same with Ball, Dal... We head hunted Hamill after a pay dispute and Powell.
We weren't happy with WC over Cripps and N. Brown

At the end of the day, it's a cut throat business and player out of contract can move. If a club head hunts them (ala Sydney) that's life
Not in the business of worrying about other clubs

Oh,
And Sydney can take comfort in Buddy, who the trumped GWS for...

I care what other clubs think because if you back door them they may not do a trade with you in future. Im just telling you what i have heard about the draft and why it has dropped off. Facts, and I know you dont like that word, suggests what i have heard is right as that draft has completely dropped off compared to years ago.

Nearly all recycled players will move clubs via free agency going forward, if the PSD only has 3 picks each year I'm sure they will cull it, waste of time & money.

It's obvious why it's dropped off... Explained that.

So we should worry about how other clubs feel about us, after a deal.

I would rather not worry about other clubs (who I can assure you don't worry about us)

They will trade with us in the future because that's the business..... They have to if they want our players/picks or a deal..... Especially in FA period.

Clubs do not hold the whip hand at all now.

If I had a choice I would screw over every club I dealt with...

Do you reckon Collingwood screwed us over Ball? Do you think they care?

So why has the PSD dropped off and why dont bigger names now get taken? Im telling you what i have heard. I trust what I have heard. And the pies did screw us over wuth Ball and i dont think they would care. How long ago was that again. PSD was still probably a much bigger draft back then. Yep screw over every club. Yep short sighted. I will go out on a limb and say the PSD for us will get us bugger all. i suppose if that happens you will be first to have a go at the club for not using it properly. We need to get players other ways because i doubt it will be in the PSD.

If we offer an out of contract player 200k more than they currently earn. Would they re-sign?

Clubs cannot force them to, they can nominate for the draft.

It's precisely what happened to every FA player lost.

We must have the best SC position in the AFL ATM and I'm hearing we've had to front end contracts to meet 95% and we don't have the young talent to worry about resigning.

Rebuilding this list must be done by EVERY avenue... I'll tell you why

1-Scully
1-Patton
1-L.Whitfield
1-Boyd
2-Cognilio
2-O'Rourke
2-Kelly
3-Plowman
4-Hoskins-Elliott
5-Buntine
7-Palmer
7-Haynes
9-Tomlinson
10-Davis
10-Sumner
11-Greene
12-Jacksh
14-Corr
14-McCarthy
19-Ward
21-Lamb
27-Stewart
29-Lobbe

Pre Selections
Shiel
Treloar
Cameron
Bugg
Hampton
Golds
Wilson
Whiley

That is who we are coming up against.

Thanks for that. Im just telling you IMo we wont use the PSD to get a gun player. You can think what you like but dont come on here and tell us how pathetic our club is if we dont use that draft.

Membrey? Tall? He's shorter than Siposs on the official figures. Not sure he's going to solve too many of our forward woes.

I see the politeness didn't last long?? Don't get to personnel there though, I can feel you tone...

Can you point out in this thread where I used the word pathetic?

Maybe you should use the quote function when posting what you say someone said? Haha

Membrey
188 cm

You don't have tobe tall, to play tall..... He is a fwd in the mould of Darling, Crameri, Hamill... Who incidently was 185cm, like Gary Snr.
