plugger did stuff no one else was capable of?
what catch a footy and kick a goal?

bit like saying lenny hayes could do stuff no one else could do
what? baulk around 3 players and kick a goal?

hayes was a better player
lockett a better forward and goal kicker

It would be interesting to see plugger play in todays game. Would he kick more than 70 goals a season? If his professionalism improved to todays standard would that change his output and could he cope with todays professionalism? Would he be as good as Jono Brown or Rooey? It's too difficult to compare players from different eras let alone different positions. For me Lenny stands for everything that is the/a greatest/great Saint. One club player, best player (with Roo) at the club in his time and bled for jumper.

With the sincerest of respect to Lenny who is a star. Plugger is the greatest player of my lifetime by a long way. Forward/Back/On ball doesn't come into the equation for me. He was a superstar. Non Saints used to come down to Moorabbin just to watch him strut his stuff. If we are talking greatest "player" he's my choice.

Greatest Saint- Trevor Barker...Fortius Quo Fidelius.
Greatest player- Tony Lockett

Hayes will rank among the greats of the club but a fair way behind these two and Robert Harvey IMO.

don't agree..........plugger was the better footballer.......but not within a bull's roar of lenny as the greatest saint.....

greatest saints are in my opinion.....banger, burke, roo, barker, doc & lenny...not neceaarily in that order either...

the ones that left don't come into the equation....ie....carl, plugger, stewart, bj....etc...

Love the Post Jiggster! ...... and love the banter.

For me, they are all great clubmen, but with different focuses.

The Doc - for his "sensationalism" and excitement he generated whenever he went near the ball. Captained us from nowhere to a premiership.
Plugger - the game changer. Loved his presence and goal kicking.
Rooey - an outright champion over many years. His marking & ability to put scores on the board "just" lifts him above my next nomination.
Harves - a ball gathering machine all over the ground. Consistent year after year.

Gee it gets hard from here :
Lenny - great, consistent, tough, player over many years. Great finals player. Great Clubman.
Loewe - our go-to guy for many years.
Barker - another sensational player at a time when we were rock bottom. Unfortunately, a shortened career.
Ditterich - a tough nut ruckman in a time when "tough" was tough.

Plenty more that I could comment on and may have missed a couple.

Let's just call them st kilda legends.
Doc
Plugger
Harvs
Barks
Lenny

Next tier:
Stewart
Roo
Burke
Lowe
Winmar

And that''s just 66 onwards. And just my opinion.
So yes, to me Lenny belongs - he epitomises the great team player and spirit of the club. More so than Roo, hence the higher rank. Similar to Burke, but I think he was the better player. Stewart drops a rank due to leaving. Plugger stays simply due to being the greatest full forward ever.

In my time of watching the Saints (from early 60's onwards), can anybody pick a better/greater forward line than this?

HF Doc, Roo, Georgie Young
F Buckets, Plugger, Milney

Try defending those 6 as a combination.

look im only in my early 30's so for me guys like Baldock, Stewart , Big Carl even Trevor Barker i can only go off the recolections of you more seasoned Saints ...
but one think for sure is im glad im old enough to have memorys of guys like Plugger, Winmar, Burke, Loewe, Aussie Jones, BB Barry Hall, Harvey, G Train, Milney, Hayes, Roo, Kosi, Dal, BJ, Joey heck even Spida playing in the red white and black ...

for me i would have to say on years of consistant excellence, leadership and marketability with awards won and respect from peers Roo would have to be my number one .. no disrespect to any of the others but i think in 10 years time the stories we will tell the next gen of little saints fans about Roo will be of him being the greatest ... Harvey is the heart and soul of the club, Lenny is the blood sweat and tears, Plugger is the power, Winmar is the skills and brilliance ... to me Roo is a bit of all of them ...

but thats just my opinion to me i think every saints player is the greatest

This is an interesting conversation. Yes, Plugger was awesome, Ian Stewart was possibly the most talented player we ever had, Trevor Barker the most courages on and off the field, but Baldock was the best by a country mile. Brilliant, unpredictable, explosive and inspirational. Our only Premiership Captain. And a humble man too. Call me what you will but the banter on this thred is just fluff. Baldock is the greatest Saint.

Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

Winmar in for Milney I reckon.
(Though MM I suspect that prefer Nicky on the ball...?)

this is utter rubbish

Lenny is much higher on the greatest saint of all than plugger......so is

Harvey
Lowe
Winmar
Riewoldt
Burke

Cant be on top of the list if you a traitor.
The end

Ok then. Didnt Winmar leave the club?
Wasn't Winmar let go ?
Nicky was delisted after being named among the best players, by the club, in 16 of the 24 games we played that year!
He was high maintenance, but he was shafted by the club!

Plugger was the best player to take the game by the throat and win the game. Not nice, just ruthless.
