ICK Riewoldt says he is desperate to lead the St Kilda revival after signing a contract extension that keeps him at the club until the end of 2016.
Riewoldt yesterday told the Herald Sun a renewed confidence in his body and an eagerness to guide the Saints’ next generation were the key factors behind him adding another season to a deal initially set to expire after 2015.
“Given the climate of AFL the loyalty factor can get a bit lost, but I think I’m an incredibly loyal person and I’m really committed to helping the club through the next phase of its existence. It’s clearly the reason I’m staying because I really value and cherish that,” Riewoldt said.
“Aiding the transition is something I committed to a couple of years ago and based on the last couple of seasons, the fact I’ve been able to play most games, my body has held up pretty well and mentally I feel good, I think it was the right thing to do.”

This makes Roo a true champion and his standing by Milne was admirable too.

Re: Follow The Leader
Why did we need to sign Roo on for 2016 now?
What if his knee falls apart next season?
Look I hope it doesn't and I want him in 2016 as well but it seems a bit odd at his age......but we do owe him a lot and he is a club legend

He deserves that. Why does it even matter. We are struggling to get to 95% of the SC and he isn't like a Siposs or Simpkin. He is proven.
Re: Follow The Leader
Strange pluggs, you've been critical of unnecessary contract extensions in recent times, not this one though?
Re: Follow The Leader
Yep because Rooy is still a champion. The others like Lee haven't proven themselves even at VFL level. It isn't even a slight comparison. There is no downside signing Rooy for an extra year. There are downsides signing unproven players.SainterK wrote:Strange pluggs, you've been critical of unnecessary contract extensions in recent times, not this one though?

Re: Follow The Leader
In Nick's case, it's a great move all around for the Club to do this. It sends out the right message to the players and the supporters.
No need to discuss Nick's on-field contributions. It is his leadership to the younger guys that means most.

Risky as IMHO.
Each to their own though.
How is there any risk at all? And Lenny signed year by year in his last 3 years because he didn't know when his last year was.
Re: Follow The Leader
Some people love being critical.
If Nick was willing to sign for 2 years, then it's a no brainer that we sign him. Some players are worth more than merely the games they play, and the benefit brought to the club by having Nick sign for 2 is patently obvious.

Re: Follow The Leader
Get the feeling Nick isn't one your favourites atm K. I am probably wrong though. I personally think it's fantastic for the club. We have to pay 95% of the cap anyway and Nick is worth every cent he gets and more IMO.SainterK wrote:Didn't Len sign year by year?

he only has to pass a medical at the end of 2015 to get the 2016 year.

'Follow the leader' was also a great rap song from the late '80s

Re: Follow The Leader
I think he'll retain the captaincy for the next 2 seasons until Dunstan, Newnes or whoever is next in line will be ready from 2017 onward.

I think you could marry that with so many of the decisions the club has made in recent times.
It's no secret I wasn't a fan of nettles, I was filthy at losing BJ when he had more passion in his little finger than most 20 something's that didn't give much effort on field, I thought we should change direction and use the captaincy as a means to develop guys further with responsibility, didn't like Pelchen and then he left half way into his plan...
I've had a bit to grumble about.
Rose coloured glasses will return when I feel the club is deserving.
This isn't a whack at Roo, just at the contracts we seem to hand out unnecessarily.
Cheers
