Oh, this is a heartbreaker. I'm going with the Wizard because he has left such a tremendous impression on me from my youth. Sorry, Roo.

Winmar was my all-time favourite footballer anywhere anytime.
Haver to vote for him ahaead of Riewoldt.
No shame for any Saint to come in top 4. Or 8, or 16.

Re: Winmar 56% Riewoldt 44%
Riewoldt clearly doesn't have the benefit of historic nostalgia to elevate his standing as Winmar clearly does
People will finally get how great Riewoldt has been 10 years from now
Winmar was electric ........on his day
Riewoldt is electric on his day - his "days" however are a lot more frequent than Winmars were for mine
No contest for me - Riewoldt easily

Psychological studies show we are more likely to rate those fresh in our mind higher.
I think you understate Winmar by using the word 'electric'. Why I rate him so highly was his tackling. Possibly the best tackler Ive seen. For a few years he was basically un-passable. Anyone who tried to run around him or through him got nailed.

Re: Winmar 56% Riewoldt 44%
Cuz was getting paid absolute peanuts compared to even a sh*t player today let alone Roo.St Lenny wrote:Actually I was Cuz's fault he had to play our his years for the Dogs. If he could have kept himself in check, it never would have happened.
Things were a lot different back then in terms of player welfare.
Cuz had to put up with 10 years of racial abuse across the fence and from other players.
All that stuff (well most of it ) is gone these days. Cuz had it tough back then.
We were a three man side until the likes of Burke Harvey Stewie came along. Before that it was just Cuz, Plugger, Spud with good helpers like David Grant and then a whole lot of battlers.
So cuz needs respect.
The post is for 'favourite' anyway. Which is subjective and in the eye of the beholder.
Noone is stopping you voting Roo - who is clearly a legend - but that doesnt mean you need to bag the other player and play dirty politics when the criteria is 'favourite'.

Re: Winmar 56% Riewoldt 44%
OK, you have lost me. Do not believe there is anyone who would vote for Winmar, much as I loved him. Roo is another level up in every aspect.
Re: Winmar 56% Riewoldt 44%
oh ffs...he lost it for one game..after he got abused by a guy with none of his abilities in the carpark before the game .and we hung him out to dry...the club should have stuck fat...they didn't shame on them ..not nickySt Lenny wrote:Actually I was Cuz's fault he had to play our his years for the Dogs. this is favorite player...not best....anyway nicky had skills i've not seen anyone else possess on a footy field......one day i watch him run head on to an opposition player near the boundry line......nicky handballed the ball along the curved boundry whilst passing the player on the other side...the ball followed the curve of the line then bounced back into his hands leaving the opposition bewildered and behind....brilliant tackler...mark and kick....cuz for me any day of the week.....glad to see the majority agree with me...

Be keen to read these "studies" Con - cause history suggests otherwiseCon Gorozidis wrote:That actually works the opposite way.Teflon wrote:Riewoldt clearly doesn't have the benefit of historic nostalgia to elevate his standing as Winmar clearly does

Ask yourself how many players became "superstars" after retiring??? It's actually a long running joke - "he'll be a lot better with the benefit of hindsight"
Sorry as good as Winmar was :
1. He was nowhere near as consistently good as Riewoldt
2. Riewoldt has held down arguably toughest gig on the ground
3. Riewoldt has become (wasn't always IMO) a top flight on/off field leader.....Winmar?

So stop arguing with the clouds.
This is a personal and subjective poll.
People will have different favourites for wildly varying reasons.
Some people will give extra marks to cuz for all the sh*t he had to put up with. The Victoria Park thing was iconic.
If the poll was 'best' player - we might get different results. But its not. It is favourite. If you want to start a best player poll - start one.
You cant argue or preach when the criteria is 'favourite'.

Re: Winmar 56% Riewoldt 44%
You are speaking through your hat. How often are current players called 'best ever' or teams called 'best ever'. That is the long running joke. Petracca is apparently the 'best in a generation' without having played a game. This already makes him better than Judd, Ricciuto and Ablett.Teflon wrote:Be keen to read these "studies" Con - cause history suggests otherwiseCon Gorozidis wrote:That actually works the opposite way.Teflon wrote:Riewoldt clearly doesn't have the benefit of historic nostalgia to elevate his standing as Winmar clearly does

Lions 3 peat - best team ever
Carlton 95 - Best team ever
Bombers 2000 - best team ever
Cats - 3 peat - best team ever
Hawks 2 peat - best team ever.
Thats 5 'best ever' just in the last 20 years.
And look up the studies yourself:
It is known as 'availability heuristic' bias.

My favourites are usually the best. The day someone tells me they had more fun watching Winmar play when plugger played is the day I will listen. Anyway who cares.
