McCartin knows what an invaluable mentor Riewoldt could be for him and has already been picking his skipper's football brain.

"He's fantastic, he's been awesome," McCartin told AFL.com.au at the AFL Players' Association induction camp for first-year players on Monday.

"He's been fantastic to try to emulate and if I can be half the player he is I'll be happy.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

McCartin says he and his fellow first-year Saints are completing about 80 per cent of the club's pre-season program, something he has found is common at other clubs.

"I think everyone I've spoken to here (at the induction camp) is doing the same thing," he says.

"To go from under-18 footy into an AFL environment and do everything would be a bit full on, so they're sort of just easing us into it.

"But in saying that it's still been pretty solid."

McCartin has found the mental demands of an AFL pre-season to be just as taxing as the physical ones.

"You've got to be switched on all day making sure you're on top of everything," he says.

"To go from training six hours a week (as a junior) to six hours a day, five or six days a week, is a pretty full-on adjustment.

"But it's awesome, a footy club is a great environment and I'm very lucky."

McCartin also considers himself lucky to have moved in with an “absolutely incredible” host family in Brighton, who have allowed him to “adjust and find my feet”.

“The workload has taken some adjusting to – with my diabetes I’ve just had to watch that – but it’s mostly getting used to a new routine, new living conditions… But I’ve been on top of all of that, and the club has been really supportive and helpful.”

The 194cm forward’s footy education will continue for some time yet; this week’s AFL Players’ Induction Camp was the latest step in that process.

“The ‘personal brand’ workshop was a real eye-opener – it’s really important to present yourself well to the public. But it’s all been really valuable, particularly [the focus on] becoming a better person as well as a better footy player.”

Patty must be taking it on board - my mum and uncle were at the club the other week to buy some merchandise - Patty stepped out of his car, approached them and shook their hands and introduced himself. He had a quick chat before excusing himself for a club meeting. They were both very impressed!

I really hope he is a super star as he has all of the leadership qualities to develop into our next Captain. I think the omen of having the gap in the front teeth may also help with our 2nd flag :D

Yes 'Mind The Gap', I hope he doesn't get the gap filled, a la Peter Siddle (test, fast bowler). IMHO Sid's bowling lost it's impact, the minute the tooth job was done on his front fangs

'Mind The Gap', 'Mind The Gap' .............. now I've heard that somewhere before :?

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/r ... 2s4ko.html

it's been spelt out for them- "They are to be role models"
"There's no wrong questions ... this is a safe place to ask questions," Robertson said. But that reassuring comment was balanced by his regular mentions of "you're wearing those tops now", in relation to the club polos each wore.

After starting with some of the most confronting issues facing women, citing statistics that one in three will experience physical violence and one in five, sexual assault, Robertson brought up examples of inappropriate behaviour, such as spectators wolf-whistling at a female boundary umpire. Players were required not just to explain that it was wrong to do so, but why.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
While the topic once focused on preventing players offending, the expectation now is that they

be "active bystanders", something the former Demons forward admitted was not instinctive.

"Even at my age, 36, to say to someone, 'Hey, what's going on here?' ... you're never taught to do that. You're taught to just butt out," he said. "I talk a lot about the hard things on the footy field being tackles, defensive acts, things like that ... but a hard thing off the field you can do for your football club is to set the right example."
