Rhys looks to me he has spent some serious time in the gym lifting some weights. Has bulked up significantly.

Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

It is one game. Consistency has always been stanleys issue.

Lets see if he backs it up

This needs to be a thread!
We had Hickey and Stanley. Both can play ruck/fwd. but we then we trade pick 25 for Longer. Hickey has to play permanent fwd. Longer gets 9 disposals and 2 marks a game and Hickey gets dropped. Stanley plays the role we should've had him in. Longer stays in the ruck.

I probably only get 10% right but I did always say Stanley was a Ruckman or nothing.
Never scored goals at Jr, SANFL or VFL. Was never going to be a key fwd.
Saints were living some fantasy that because he was tall, blonde, fast and looked a bit like Roo he could play like Roo.

Nah, it's just how it always played out.

Might be a natural ruck, but his body isn't up to it

I reckon he hurt his foot when he tried to take that specky in the forward line about halfway through the third quarter. Stayed on the ground and had his head down on the grass - must have known he did something.

We played him as a key defender ffs...

Was always a player that was better when allowed to run around.

We evidently prefer immobile first rucks that do little but tap.

Hickey should be rucking now but instead we are doing Stanley Mark 2. Hickey' s next club will be happy.

Fortunately the Blues ff-ed up and we got Goddard when we should not have. Otherwise the Stanley deal would not be lived down. I was livid about the Stanley trade till we got Goddard with that pick.

But make no mistake....Stanley is the best kick of any ruckman in the AFL. Is both a great field kick and also can kick it very long. Is a very good mark with the stats to back it up. His pure tapwork may lack, but that is the least important quality of a ruckman. He gets to many contests due to his pace and athelicism. Yes not a natural footballer, but will only get better.

Think we made the right call. Can only wait until we see Goddard to know for sure.
He struggled to get his body right, which is also happening at Geelong. He was also omitted from their side too so it hasn't be a clear "strength to strength" scenario where we let top-shelf quality walk.
He also struggled for consistency or to really work himself into a game when he was down, we forget how frustrating he was. Maybe he develops that aspect of his game at Geelong, that doesn't mean he necessarily would have been the same at the Saints.
Even tonight, he committed a couple of bad turnovers early.
Good luck to the guy, hope he has a good career. We needed to turn him over for the long term benefit of our list.

This is it. Cant be played in the ruck because his body breaks down.

Nothing to do with development

And lets hold back on the typical St.kilda bashing by some so called fans until Goddard has been given the same sort of go.

Fair Dinkum Stanley played one or two games a year OK, then either went missing or got injured.

he may go well at Geelong, but give Hugh Goddard a chance before making rash statements

I don't think he missed to many games at all in his last 2 seasons. That's a pretty fair body of work to see if he is fit or not. By the way we didn't get Goddard for Stanley. We got the pick that got Goddard so we may end up all right but Stanley will become a very good ruckman. He does things I would love to see Longer do and tthats mark and kick it. Yep he isn't a good tapper of the ball but I rate that as important as brushing your teeth after a lunchtime meal.

You did say that and I remember agreeing with you.

In the role we had him he was standing in the way of us developing a genuine key forward, such as Bruce.

In the ruck pecking order, rightly or wrongly, he was behind both Longer and Hickey. Hence I had no problem with the trade.

Considering we'd drafted Pierce as well, our ruck stocks weren't exactly thin. I think 197cm key defenders are harder to find and we've got one in Goddard. Stanley's going ok at the Cats, hopefully Goddard will be as good or better for us.

PA talls didn't do a great job last night, and Stanley was a bit too mobile for them, but he won't get that luxury against stronger opposition.

What in hell are you on about? Do you post just to argue with everybody?

FFS Mr Asperbergers, we got # 21 for Stanley, and selected Hugh Goddard, so in the end we got Hugh Goddard for Stanley

Bugger off with your idiotic semantics, Goddard is on our list at the expense of Stanley.

And Stanley is always getting injured when needed the most. And plays one good game in six.

Lets see how Goddard goes in the next few season before boof heads whinge about the trade.

In ranking the trade in terms of the Saints recruiting team making the right call, I will compare Stanley vs McKenzie as that is the player that our recruiting team would most likely have been hoping to land with Pick21.

It was only the Blues unbelievabaly taking Boekhorst (and isn't he looking great!!!!) that had Goddard slip to 21.

Goddard for Stanley I am content with, but I still rate Stanley who at 24 is only going to get better.

Early signs on McKenzie are good. But if he stays a flanker then that would be worth less than a regular ruck or ruck/forward.

The problem with Stanley was that he was not consistent as a forward and when he went into the more physical role as permanent ruck his body couldn't cope.
As a forward he played a couple of dominant games every year and the rest of the time he went missing.
When he played as first ruck for us he very often broke down because he simply does not have the physicality for the bash and crash of the role.
Don't forget that even when he played a blinder as a forward it was his speed and agility and not his physicality that were the dominating traits of his game.
Good luck to him I hope he has a fruitful career at the cats but I see that one dominant performance in the ruck and his body has let him down again.
