Very good trade period

Post: # 1587624Post older saint »

Video aside and assuming this all works itself out i think the club can hold their heads high after this trade period.

Were able to add the equivalent to 3 first round picks to the club - Carlisle , Freeman and pick 14 , while having Rice choose StKilda under father/son.

This addresses weaknesses of Big key defender to play on beasts, outside speed with class and Rice sounds very promising . Add to that pick 14 - ideally the BAP is an outside mid with speed and once again 3 first rounders added for the 3rd year in a row.

Great job Bains
2016 trade period - get that free agent or star out of contract , Kelly, Omera whoever then 2017 charge to finals!

We are currently the laughing stock of the competition.
Everyone, even Essendon supporters are laughing at us.

Day 1 and the much sought after recruit has trashed our club.
Shows we did ZERO due diligence on him.
Zero chance of attracting new sponsors unless we bite the bullet and sack him.

Even if the chronic hamstring recruit is ok we used next years pick to get him.

In short it looks like being a disastrous trade period.

I live in great hope. We may still have the last and very loud laugh when the guy turns it on and is an AA defender next year. From what I have read hear about JC, I get the impression that he will thrive in a caring, supportive environment with clearly defined boundaries about acceptable behaviors and actions. I feel the guy was lost in the "what ever it takes" unethical and immoral surroundings he found himself at his former club. Remember? He tried to articulate the best way he could his thoughts and feelings about his former club......."...this club is F@#*ed". I would not do us any harm to try and imagine the depth of despair he must have felt to come up with such utterance.

I have a strong feeling that he is not a lost cause. He will do extremely well at our club.

Don't give up hope. Remember how well Michael Gardiner worked out for us. Lets hope Jake can follow that example.

terry wallace on SEN today was giving his scores for each club in terms of how each fared in the trade period, and he rated St Kilda very highly (an 'A' I think) and rated us in the top five out of all the clubs.
he's right; Carlisle is a terrific and hard come by key defender, Freeman an awesome prospect and what the Saints need, and pick 14 is a first round pick and should pick up a quality new recruit there.
I don't think we got too many more spaces left at our club so with Rice and upgrade of Sinclair I don't reckon we had much room for any other additional picks anyway (I refer to the missing pick 44 or whatever it was).

I'm not thrilled personally.

Carlisle was rated around a pick 15, somewhere in that ball park
We down graded 5 to 14, and gave away pick 23 (or whatever)

Jake was out of contract, with a suspect attitude and a potential WADA ban coming.

Doing the math, it looks to me like we broke even... In the circumstances this trade should have worked in our favour, don't think breaking even was a good enough result. 44 would have tipped it in our favour.

We wanted Rice and from what I can we haven't got enough picks together to get him as per that rule.

For Freeman, a player that hasn't played in 2 years, i'd rate him more as an early to mid thirties pick. Unless we drastically improve, it seems like the cost will be early to mid 20s... Again, too high IMO.

Not a disaster by any means but we've paid overs for risks and i don't like that

The way our luck's been running the father and son fugatives being sought by police will be Dean and Bailey Rice

But in all seriousness, I'm reasonably happy. Yes the timing of the Carlisle video wasn't ideal, but young guys do tend to make stupid mistakes.

We've addressed some pressing needs. Another key position player to complement Bruce, Goddard and McCartin. Plus Freeman, who could be a steal with a bit of luck, to add to the midfield. Plus Rice if we get him

What a load of steaming garbage. We are not the laughing stock of anything, the press has been very sympathetic to us, in fact they are saying that the new St Kilda can actually turn Jake around.
Due diligence? The supposedly most professional club in the completion, Hawthorn, made a massive play for him and even found extra cash just in case he accepted. What more do you want us to do?

Freo picked up Bennell, don't see sponsors running for their lives, hawthorn have two players suspected of drugging and raping a girl, no word from their sponsors.

I have great faith that our new regime will turn Jake around, and this will not only improve our image but it will also enhance our club as the place to be for future recruits

Rice could be our only hope.
Can't believe that essendon managed to stuff is again.
Collingwood managed to clear their sick Bay and full ours again. We have such an excellent history of fixing hamstrings.
Let's hope he is still around for when we 'use' or second round pick for him.

Why would Rice be our only hope? We have pick 14.

Fantastic post Mad Dog. Couldn't agree more. The hysteria will die down in a day or two and hopefully inspires Jake even more as ultimately he has the most to prove.

AFL are totally in our corner too, hence why press conference front and centre at HQ.

The kid has had no guidance and will thrive under our new regime. The club has done zero wrong, got on front foot and the dust will settle.

Rice isn't locked in yet.
Freeman doesn't count as we have "borrowed" from the future to get him which will look pretty silly next year if his hammies have given out again.

But yes we do have pick 14 which we successfully downgraded from a prime pick 5 in return for a brainless moron who managed to destroy our brand within a couple of hours of signing.

The press may be relatively supporting.

But in terms of supporters you must be living in a bubble or you don't know any opposition supporters!

Essendon supporters in particular are referring to "our drug culture" and having a great chuckle.

High risk strategy this year.

If it all comes off then we speed up our improvement by a year or maybe 2. If it fizzes we go backward.

Talk of a second video to me shows its more that just a one off thing from Carlisle. I would suggest he has a problem!
So we got a 'coke' junkie with a 2 year WADA ban hanging over him and a broken down sprinter who cant get out of the starting gates.

Bloody wonderful result Saints, they may as well of opened the club up to the Seaford chapter of the Rebels OMCG with all the positive media they have received....

For me from a PR perspective with all the negative media trade banter and now the above issues this trade period how been a disaster.

I feel strongly about drug use and initially I called for his contract to be terminated and the trade rescinded. Now if this 2nd video evolves as factual I can no longer remain a financial member of the club!

Great stuff. You have a go at me. At least I don't abuse the club when most without bias say we were at least a B plus.

there is no evidence of that though

is the video from the same occasion
when was it
has he done it recently
does he have strikes against him

does he have a habit... does he use for patches on end recreationally when the prospects of getting caught are slim?

you're just drawing long conclusions from little information

Most guys in the AFL partake in drugs. There are even stories of Judd and his missus getting involved. The problem is these guys get paid too much and in the off season have nothing to do. There are stacks of stories doing the rounds about Franklin, so Carlisle is no Robinson Carusoe.

Not a great trade period in my view.

Freeman could be a disaster or he could be a champion, but we used next years pick for him, so we should consider him part of next years draft, not this year.

Carslile for pick 5, plus and minus other picks is just a moderate trade at best. Pick 5 would have got us a Parish but we traded that for an inconsistent sook with a poor attitude and a likely WADA suspension.

Now we have pick 14 in a shallow draft.

Pretty average trading
