The all time best team of "scallywags"
With the Carlisle affair unfolding, it got me thinking. AFL players have always gotten up to no good, with many falling foul of the law, while others would've but for the grace of god and many others turning a blind eye to various indiscretions. So here is my all time best team of "scallywags". I'd love to see what the rest of the forum can come up with. You don't need to have been convicted of anything, necessarily. You just had to be a handful to manage, or never be far from controversy. Not a bad side, eh?
B: Doug Booth Brian Lake Glenn Archer
HB: Mick Turner (Captain)Ted Whitten* Darren Millane
C: Andrew Lovett Ian Stewart Jim "The Terminator"Buckley
HF: Des Tuddenham Wayne Carey Nicky Winmar
F: Gary Sidebottom Tony Lockett Cadyn Beetham
R: John Nicholls Darren Millane
R: Wayne Johnson
I/C: Rhett Baynes Wes Fellowes Sam Kekovich Don Nicholls
Coach: James Hird
*You might be surprised to see Mr. Football in there. He was well known for his promiscuity, with his favourite thing being having sex while several of his mates watched on, hidden in the wardrobe. If his conquests had known others were watching, would they have consented? If not, that makes Ted a rapist. With the frequency he did it, apparently, a serial rapist, no less.

Because he deserves it. Protected species. Fat Head Mcguire kept him out of prison. Wanna be stand over man and drug dealer. Serial drunk driver. Got him in the end. Alright then. Put Didak in the ruck rover's position. Had to be another filth player.saynta wrote:Darren millane gets a double.

I'm curious with Beetham's inclusion, I was still a young lad when we came through our doors, naive to the realities of young men with disposable income.....
Anyone care to elaborate??
Dane Swan is banging down the door in the reserves, and deserves a spot somewhere.

Does Leigh Matthews count, didn't he have the ignominy of being charged by police with an on field incident? Or does that take him from the 'scallywag' category and place him in the thug or felon categories?

Met Plugger a couple of times. Very nice young man. Yeah, I know what's in his history, but very polite and well mannered with me.

Thanks Loris. Forgot about old lethal. Back in the days when I was a callow young copper, I remember Jeansy said to me that lethal was the most frightening individual he'd ever met through football and Allan wasn't given to hyperbole. He said he was capable of anything. He added that it was fortunate that lethal had football, because without it he'd probably have ended up in jail.loris wrote:Does Leigh Matthews count, didn't he have the ignominy of being charged by police with an on field incident? I played school boy footy with Darren and he and his family lived around the corner from me, he was a great guy and a good friend of mine most of what you wrote is complete and utter bulls***. Re: The all time best team of "scallywags"
Then of course the 'scallywag' brigade from Westcoast Eagles. Ben cousins, Fletcher, Kerr, Gardiner (in his Eagles days), Emblem. Plus their 'mentor' Chris Mainwarring! Their current player whose name escapes me that has just spent about 9 months in jail for assault and returned to the team throughout the season.
And of course the women/wife beaters.......... Could start off with Jeff Farmer..............
Oh so many footballers demonstrate that when they sit down they squash their brain!!!!

Re: The all time best team of "scallywags"
Maybe add these wannabee's to the rookie list
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/law-or ... 7579730171
"TWO of the men accused of raping a Brisbane teenager with a beer bottle on Australia Day are aspiring Brisbane Lions players.
A 19-year-old man appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning charged with rape, observations or recordings in breach of privacy and three counts of distributing prohibited visual recordings.
It is alleged he recorded the university student being raped with a beer bottle while passed out on Australia Day.
The student reportedly only found out after it was posted on Facebook."
Why would you do that?

Re: The all time best team of "scallywags"
Not sure how these blokes missed the team...
Mark Jackson
Brendan Fevola
Ben Cousins
Fraser Gehrig
Steve Lawrence
Dean Brogan
Clarkson should be coaching that team...multiple off-field incidents and the king hit in London brawl as a player.

I too have a very close connection to Darren. There's a difference between 'stand over' and 'stand up'. He was a good person and he stood up for himself his family and his mates no matter what the odds or reason. He was loyal and proud of his working class background but stand over wasn't his style. Mind you, you wouldn't wanna owe him money and have no intention of paying it. He was essentially a knock about lad. A local legend and loved by most people who really got to know him.BringBackMadDog wrote:I played school boy footy with Darren and he and his family lived around the corner from me, he was a great guy and a good friend of mine most of what you wrote is complete and utter bulls***. Re: The all time best team of "scallywags"
I call bulls***! I have direct evidence of his activities. I don't want to cast doubt on your opinion of Darren and his family, so I'll limit myself to what I have direct evidence of. I took statements from two victims of assaults and threats by Wes Fellowes and Millane made on behalf of a well known criminal. The threats related to unpaid debts for drugs. These two victims were only a part of a wider investigation.BringBackMadDog wrote:I played school boy footy with Darren and he and his family lived around the corner from me, he was a great guy and a good friend of mine most of what you wrote is complete and utter bulls***. Darren not only had problems with alcohol, but also cocaine and amphetamines. He often bragged about his connection and influence with underworld figures. The main target of the investigation admitted Millane was a close friend who was being groomed for higher duties. Fellowes was apparently just an idiot with a drug problem who hung onto Millane's coat tails.
I'm sure Millane presented as a great guy to the general public, as do most high profile people who have dark secrets to hide. I doubt he discussed his nefarious activities with anyone who wasn't involved themselves. His death ensured there was no prosecution against him, but he did have powerful friends who made it clear they would stand by him, not because of any sense of moral superiority, but self-preservation. His famous friends started disappearing quickly once the word got out that he was under the spotlight. Sorry to disillusion you BBMD, but he had a very dark side to his character. I know he was also very generous with his time for the fans, so it's little wonder you thought he was a great guy. Clearly, part of him was good. These things are always complex.
The unfortunate truth is he was lured into that world, hooked by cunning and ruthless people who exploited his vulnerability to suit their own ends. A bit like everyone else who is on the lower rungs in the drug scene. He started to enjoy it a bit too much and went along with it in the end. A willing participant who frightened and hurt people. I know he's dead and can't defend himself, but if you speak to anyone who was in the know about that darker world he inhabited, they would also set you straight about him.
It reminds me of a number of murder investigations I was involved in. Many times, those who new the offender couldn't believe the accused could be capable of killing someone. Like the serial killer joke goes, when asked about the murderer, the neighbour said the suspect was a lovely, quiet bloke who kept to himself. People were always coming and going. Come to think of it I only ever saw people going in. I never saw anyone leave. Sorry.

You're right CQS. As you pointed out, you wouldn't want to owe him money and have no intention of paying it back. One of the reasons high profile people get away with crap like this is that many of their friends and family never see the other side of them. They maintain their public image until the fall from grace. Ask many of Ben Cousins friends what a great guy he was and they'll tell you. Plenty of those knew of the extent of his problems, but were unwilling to say anything, or more importantly, pull him up. That's how ordinary good blokes become narcissistic assholes who end up being capable of anything. Chris Mainwaring, Daniel Chick, etc. This topic is proof enough of how many are allowed to fly under the radar because of their status.CQ SAINT wrote:I too have a very close connection to Darren. I never met Darren but if you drank at the Boundary you knew his Dad. Tough but fair man if you were good to him he was good to you. If you were an arsehole he was a better arsehole.

Re: The all time best team of "scallywags"
I think we both know Darren was a low rung player in that world WW. The same can be said of poor old Freddy Cook and his very good friend who is still flying high in his celebrity. Good men with pathetic addictions and huge egos who were exploited by the real criminals but loved by their peers. These stories are not exclusive to the criminal element either. Its just sad that we have to talk about it here where we should be celebrating our great game. Football was going to be Darren's way out of that life. But then again its just a game.White Winmar wrote:You're right CQS. As you pointed out, you wouldn't want to owe him money and have no intention of paying it back.
