Somewhat embarrassingly, I can make an educated guess.
I take it as a reference to some quality "youth" TV - Jersey Shore.
The ladies on that show refer to their preferred types - muscled guys with an Italian-American heritage - as "meatballs".
Minchington looks a little like he fits their preferred type.

In other news, Leigh Montagna is called "Joey", after an American baseballer "Joe Montagna".
Dempster is called " Shinners" because he used to kick the ball from his shins.
Sam Fisher is called "Chips" because chips go with fish.
Gilbert is called "Gumby" due to his awkwardness.

Fisher is called chips because at the time we had two.
One is now an umpire...fish
