THE MCEVOY TRADE
Yesterday's game was quite insightful re the trade a couple of years ago.
We gave up our #1 ruckman (Big Ben) and received back a draft pick + Savage
Our List Management team were obviously of the opinion that we would eventually (hopefully sooner rather than later) replace McEvoy with another equal/better option and Hickey yesterday (all season so far) gave us a glimpse surely of what they were hoping for.
So it's taken a couple of years but we seemingly have replaced McEvoy's contribution plus we've picked up Savage.
And then there was the draft pick used on Acres.
McEvoy has been very good for Hawthorn and played his role in 2 of their premierships. He was exactly what they needed t the time.
Given our position (list rebuilding) we didn't have the same need for him (IMHO) and therefore were able to see the long term view rather than the here/now.

Re: THE MCEVOY TRADE
Yes, this trade was bound to pay dividends in the long run. It seemed to satisfy both parties, which is great in the scheme of things.

Yep. Id take our side of that trade every day of the week. We have only seen a glimpse of where Acres could end up. He has some serious upside

Re: THE MCEVOY TRADE
The classic Win-win situation. That being said McEvoy was hardly this missing piece of the puzzle for Hawks. Reckon any ruckman in the comp could have taken his spot and for the same results. He released Hale up forward, did his job. Purely on what the trade brought to each others team though think we came out on top. McEvoy doesn't suit the one ruck model we seem to like. Hickey almost plays like another midfielder while Big boy is your old school dinosaur. Dont think he would suit our style of play.Savage and Acres will be there at our next tilt though. That Im sure of.

He's an average ruckman who simply plays better with a tremendous supporting cast of players and a brilliant coach to back him. Nevertheless, he slotted into their team nicely. And to his credit, he persisted and backed himself.
Meanwhile, we've been able to develop two players who'll be instrumental in our future aspirations.

Re: THE MCEVOY TRADE
Pretty sure the trade was McEvoy + pick 24 (Hartung) for Savage + pick 17 (Dunstan) + pick 18 (Acres).
Thought it was a win-win trade at the time and still do. I'm happy with what we got and the Hawks got what they wanted.

Re: THE MCEVOY TRADE
Definitely happy, especially when we have our future ruck situation sorted. We don't really have a need for McEvoy, but the acquisition of Dunstan, acres and savage have accelerated our rebuild
And yes the above trade is correct, we got Hawks pick and their Buddy compensation pick.

Re: THE MCEVOY TRADE
The McEvoy trade was a very smart move by both clubs. Hawthorn desperately wanted someone to release Hale forward. We had Hickey coming through, the big problem we could have run into is whilst rebuilding McEvoy would have become a free agent, we would of then run the risk of loosing him for stuff all through free agency. Clubs looking for a ruckman would have come from everywhere and he would have been in his prime in the bottom side. Hawthorn made sure we were given something decent in return so fair play to them as well.
and that's the bottom line

Re: THE MCEVOY TRADE
I always thought very highly of Ben, and was sorry to see him go, but realise the value of the trade. Ben is a quality person who (like Nicky Dal) has never said a bad word about his former club. Class act!
