Jonesy, please accept my humblest apology! I read your comment straight after reading more tripe opiion about Plugger and immediately reacted in the negative.

Rate him? The greatest. A couple of minutes of highlights on Open Mike was a timely reminder that he wasn't all lead / mark / kick goal. Always looked better in a Saints jumper even though no less a player or the Swans.

But the thread is about Kenny Sheldon. Our appalling record of sacking coaches, or coaches walking, got a mention. I admire Kenny so much ecause at no stage dd he fall into the trap of bagging the club.

If coaches are judged by finals success then our best coaches have been:

1. Jeans - the only Premiership, 3 Grand Finals
2. Lyon - 2 Grand Finals (replays don't count)
3. Alves - 1 Grand Final, 1 Night Premiership
4. Thomas - 2 Preliminary Finals, 1 Night Premiership
5. Sheldon - Finals in 1991, 1992 from only 4 seasons.

Don't know who was coach in 1913.

George Sparrow, I think his name was. He had players like Dave McNamara and Roy Cazaly at his disposal.

I have no idea who coached us in 1939 but I remember reading that that team was one of the strongest every fielded by the St. Kilda club. Bill Mohr was one of the notables.

Kenny coached IMO one of the most talented sides in 91/92 I have seen.

The team suited the era, it had quality on every line and up to 8 stars. Lockett, Loewe, Winmar and Harvey were unstoppable. Frawley, Burke, Grant, Morris reliably good. McAdam, Rice, Grieg, Bowey were capable of very good football.

It was a team that should have played finals... Perhaps a GF?

I played with Dean Grieg at Clayton. I obviously was obsessed with Lockett. Tony was his idol, but said to me straight out... If plugger had applied himself, he could've single handily delivered a flag, he was that good... No one could stop him in full flight. But he struggled to maintain it, even in games due to lack of fitness. He told me that Plugger would be lucky to finish a 3k run. Rarely went to the Gym and often jogged a couple of laps and did Goalkicking for a bit and that was it. Occasionally would do a full ground drill at FF or take part in contested marking. But basically did what he chose. He also chose not to train quite often.
He was allowed to dictate to Kenny or he'd spit it. It's fair to say, Kenny was a bit in awe of Tony... Never something a coach should be.

I used to work with a guy who played in a Carlton premiership side of the early 80's.
He told me (very funny) stories about the Carlton stars, all of whom were definitely treated very differently and given great leeway under David Parkin.

This is how it was in that era.

Lockett is a Legend, absolutely ... But by his own admission, at St Kilda, was not fully committed to his footy after 87.
It just shows you how good he was!

It's well known that Carlton partied hard but trained harder. It was ok to party or be a bit undisciplined whilst winning... But heads rolled when they lost... Even for 1 year.

Parking sacked in 85 not long after three premierships in 4 years.

Tony was always self effacing to a fault.

Because he is so self effacing, that should not impact on the status he actually achieved on the footy field.

I recall one after match Dinner function when there were 2 empty seats on our table - and the mutterings were audible in that Vicki and Tony were not in attendance.

When they did arrive, Tony apolgised to Alan (whose table it was) saying that they had had to return to Cranbourne after the match to take a young lad they had with them at the football that day home.

If my memory serves me correctly, the young had some disability.

And THAT was what you expected.

Sheldon and Hudson were doing a great job working together at the Saints, i still don't understand why the club basically turned on Hudson.

The end result of that. Hudson left. Ludicrous.

They were the days when the Social Club was the Social Club and the Football Club survived on what the Social Club decided to contribute - if anything.

Hence the problems when offers such as the Collingwood offer for Tony came.

If my memory serves me correctly, it was under Andrew Plympton that the almagamation of the Social Club and the Football Club was finally agreed - after great rancour.

After a disappointing season under the stewardship of Sheldon and Hudson, in putting accountability I would understand that the Board could not resolve where responsibility lay - so they terminated both appointments.

Where the sides of that time fell short was ruck presence - hence Bingham from Hawthorn and Flanigan from Geelong in an attempt to plug the deficiency.

On occasions Lockett would be given a run in the ruck early to try to gain some momentum, but that was never sustainable.

The bad culture thing is a myth, perpetuated by scum journos.

I'd like to believe this, I really would. But the proof seems to be in the pudding that there was some bad culture in our club. The 1980s was testament to that. Many former players who went to other clubs said it was particularly noticeable. Decades of losing is often brought on by bad culture. What else can you put it down to? It was all downhill after Yabby Jeans left. Fortunately, people like Grant Thomas helped eradicate this culture.
