Did Bomber Thompson end up by paying the fine the AFL had imposed on him over Essendope?

I think he had until the October of the final season he was coaching at Essendon to pay the fine, during Hird's paid study stint in Paris. Can't recall hearing he did pay it. He seemed to take his bat & ball and go home sulking after his big 'presentation' that night at the Essendon Best & Fairest awards. After that it was media only.

If he didn't pay the fine he wouldn't be eligible to coach anyone would he?

I don't know, but my guess is that the AFL paid it. Just like the fines Carlton got for cheating the salary cap.

should never work in football again
the link between him and the Essendope and him not being named and shamed would suggest his previous success earned him a get out of jail card
that card should have stipulated that he never coach again

for anyone to seriously suggest him as a consideration for coaching us, it totally nuts, especially given his obvious enjoyment of a "recreational regime" of the stars...

Did you see him on 360?

I'm going to buy his book for my dad (sad Bomber fan). And I'm going to copy the page where he sets out the decision making tree as to what you do when you do and do not have the ball and give it to my u8 and u10 boys.

He may be a disgraced injector with "social" issues, but he had a pretty simple message that worked.

And no, he will never ever ever coach our great club.

but to be fair, it was Bomber who got those players to Geelong and coached them for 6+ years to make that line up possible!

Costa told him in no uncertain terms to lift his game when the team was struggling a bit earlier in 2007, and they arranged to get Balme in to mentor him, and not to mention whatever they started jabbing half way through the 2007 season when quite a few of the players seemed to bulk up quite quickly, and remarkably few players got injuries or recovered from them in record time....

Correct. Have you ever heard him say anything positive about the saints? I haven't.

Essendon people in the main have no respect for the Saints. Never have.

He was cooked at Geelong until the club stripped him of most of his duties.

So clearly, he isn't capable (or at least wasn't) of successfully carrying out a Manager/Coach type role that other sports and still some AFL coaches do. The team and the club he was coaching were going nowhere with him holding down that post.

As for his 'pure football coach' ability, which really these days is what most clubs look for due to the 'modern structure' of AFL footy clubs, the jury is still out for mine.

Geelong obviously were a very, very good team. Loaded with ability and they managed to keep them together. He did very well as their coach. No doubt.

But the fact that Chris Scott won a flag in his first year with basically the same group minus their best player, suggests that maybe Thompson wasn't the genius that many thought. Maybe he was just steering a freakishly good list? Maybe he was good, and lucky. But not great?

His time at Essendon is blown out of all proportion if you ask me.

They were on PEDs leading into the 2012 season, and started accordingly. Then injuries hit and they fell apart.

Of course Hird coached them in 2013 when the scandal broke, and they would have played finals had the AFL not suspended them.

Then Hird gets banned and Thompson takes over a team that clearly has proven they are capable already - and simply coaches them to a losing final which was no better than what the same gorup had done under Hird.

Obviously the stats get skewed when Hird returns as the WADA appeal kicks in, and it appears that Thompson was a hero as they fall down the ladder after his departure.

Funnily though, everyone is penciling them in for finals next year when they get their team back.

So for mine, Thompson is a wanker of the highest order. Speaks s*** and is quite overrated.

What do you mean 'he put the list together'

That is so incorrect

He was a part of the selection panel every week.... Stephen Wells put the list together

Indeed. Had the cats lost to Richmond early in 2007 and not flogged them by 100+, bomber was on his way out the door. The most interesting thing I ever heard was from Tommy Lonergan. In few words at a social function, he left no one in the audience in doubt that the reason the pussies had such a successful era was that the team, and I quote, "basically coached itself". I'd heard similar rumours, but it was a brave call, nevertheless, even though chris Scott was the coach by then. I don't know if it was sour grapes, as Tommy was not one of bombers favourites, but it was interesting.

I wonder if this is aimed at me (it's not quite what I said - but I notice you contradict everything I post!). In case it is - what I meant was, the players were all champions by 2009, but they weren't champions when they arrived at Geelong. So, imho, he must've been doing something right, or at the very least not have been doing too much wrong. (Yes, I know he was almost sacked - but they didn't sack him - and no, I had absolutely no idea who 'put the list together' and had never heard of Stephen Wells, but thanks for the info and good for him!)

if we went with bomber over richo i think thatd be it for me, we have a rich history of doing it but I am sick and tired of chopping and changing. Keep doing that you look like melbourne/Carlton and create a history like ours
You stick with your coach for minimum 3-4 years then judging results start to consider what to do.

Under richo we have started the climb back up. Everyone is buying into the game plan and have built a foundation that suits the style of play. The plan was finals 2018. Its 2016 and we are a chance. We have what may be the most potent forward line going forward in 1-2 years. Foundations of what could be a top 2 backline in 1-2 years. A ruck division that is thriving and a midfield that is starting to pull together. Why would you change what is working?

if by 2018 we are finishing 12-14th when most our team is hitting its prime, you would consider a change of coach but at the moment he is ticking all the boxes. Ken Hinkley's spot would be looking a bit shakey at the moment?

It's hilarious that anyone would consider him.

But then again, there are millions of jokers in the U.S of A that will vote for Trump!

What does Kent Kingsley think of this?

USELESS FACT: The WADA case against Essendon (in Sydney as well) is exactly 10 years to the day that Australia qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
