The deal from Hawthorn was so lucrative to St Kilda that I think the Hawthorn negotiators made a mistake and did not realise that they had left pick 23 inside the deal.
Pick 10 slips to pick 12 say due to academy picks = 1268 points
Pick 36 remains about there = 502 points
Take off pick 68 = 59 points
That would have offered St Kilda 1702 points worth mid way between 6 & 7 but again allowing for 2 place slippage = midway between pick 8 & 9
Means that if Hawthorn finishes in the top 9 St Kilda would be ahead.
Pick 23 is an unnecessary bonus, it is no steak knife.
It has been suggested that Gold Coast said we don't want any future picks in the O'Meara deal but
A Hawthorn offer of pick 23, 36 and Hawthorns 2017 first rounder would have been a better deal than they will get now.
If Hawthorn had waited until after the Lewis deal they could be offering Hawthorns first rounder + 23 + 36 + 48 = 1619 points.
Gold Coast takes those 3 picks to St Kilda for pick 10.
Saints laughing all the way to the bank.
Gold Coast ends up with pick 10 for 2016 and probably a pick 11 to 18 for 2017.
Oh dear. Hawthorn and Gold Coast have really stuffed this up.
But Hawthorn supporters are confident O'Meara will reject any attempt by Essendon due to bad blood between O'Meara and Guy McKenna when the latter was coach at Gold Coast.
O'Meara can refuse a trade to Essendon but once he is in the main draft and/or preseason draft he can only use salary requirements to prevent another club taking him.
Hawthorn does not have much salary to spare.
