Re: AFL.com!!!!!
i will enquire on one point from this ongoing exchange
the whole free / restricted agency gig might suit the players
though a club (unless positioned for high compensation) would be keen / smart to move em on
whilst still contracted wouldnt they ?
so many angles to be considered in this trade caper

pick 10 is overrated.Jacks Back wrote:Nothing was going to happen this year as soon as our first round draft pick was given away.
So, we have 2 second round draft picks this year. BIG deal. But no 1st rounder this year which would have been a top 10 draft pick.

I thought the plan was to win premierships not just be a finals contender.stonecold wrote:So your saying that if Fyfe or Martin had of answered Yes this year, St.Kilda would have said no, is that right?????saint-stu wrote:That isn't news sorry. The saints have said since the start of the rebuild that they would start looking at free agents in the back half of the rebuild. Jaxons said many times not this year.
Hate to break it to ya, but we are nearly at the back end of our rebuild now!!!!!

Re: AFL.com!!!!!
In European soccer a player gets offered a contract extension over a year ahead of the trade period.WindSister wrote:i will enquire on one point from this ongoing exchange

so many angles to be considered in this trade caper
If he hasn't signed a contract extension ahead of that trade period the club puts him on the open market and sells him.
The club then collects a hefty transfer fee.
The player then has no choice but to negotiate a contract with his new club.
If the player were allowed to start the final year of a contract without extension the player, come the end of the season, the player becomes a free agent and his former club misses out on the transfer fee.
The European soccer clubs are ruthless on this policy.
They don't have salary caps to deal with, it is all about money.
So far AFL clubs have not pursued this approach because under AFL rules a player can not be traded without giving permission.
But they sure can be coerced - Josh Kennedy was told by Carlton you go to West Coast because we are trading you as part of the Chris Judd deal.
At the time Kennedy was devastated.
Now every goal Kennedy kicks against Carlton the scum supporters are devastated.
One aspect you overlook is draft pick compensation.
At the end of 2014 Melbourne were over the moon when James Frawley wanted to go to Hawthorn as a free agent.
Hawthorn offered sufficient salary to get Melbourne a mid first round pick.
Everyone knew it was a stitch up but nothing could be proved.
Melbourne had come second bottom so got pick 3 as compensation - Angus Brayshaw

Re: AFL.com!!!!!
draft compensation was what i was noting in the brackets on the third line
... its where my pondering led
chasing an impending free agent from last pick freemantle
(for example) includes the machinations of freo knowing they are
positioned well for a generous draft pick concession
coz they know their prospects of climbing tbe ladder are lowlow
where as .... we are (stkfc) presented with an 'easier' set of machinations when dealing with
flag winning charcoal 'n orange trade department for a free agent (or two even !!!!!)
yes ?
... just lookn for the subtlty 'n nuance (as i do over things) in the trade time world

Re: AFL.com!!!!!
Didn't saints mention after the Hawks trade about the possibility of getting into the first round, and Nathan Burke said we were chasing a big fish months ago.
If you don't give us more info than what we already have then you are just repeating knowns. But you'd claim it all the same.
Need the details stone! Otherwise I make the bold statement saints will use their first 2 draft picks because someone at the club told me so.

Re: AFL.com!!!!!
Stonecold this is getting to be on the verge of trolling. Nothing you have predicted has come true and now you're claiming that the club being consistent with their message that they were open to trading back into the first round is your vindication? We've also been consistent with the fact that we'll be going hard on free agency from 2017 onwards for several years. Absolutely nothing new here

Yes, pick 23 is underrated.Jacks Back wrote:More overrated than pick 23? Come on!Rosco wrote:pick 10 is overrated.Jacks Back wrote:Nothing was going to happen this year as soon as our first round draft pick was given away.

Dangerfield at pick 10 when he was drafted, but has been a graveyard for the last 6 years.
Apart from danger, pick 23 has turned out better than 10 more often than not.
