Ok say follow the Hawthorn play finals model, they finish 8th (opptimisict) we get pick 11 and Ed Phillips then.

Agree, yes we miss a year of development but still not sure how Long and Battle aren't bonuses ?

Some of the comments here are such dribble.
Here are facts we loved Long.
Bulldogs and Richmond are furious we took him as both wanted him with their next pick.
We knew Florent and Galluci would be gone by our pick they were two we really liked.
Powell-Pepper if he was there would have been a tough call with Long, I suspect we would have still taken long.
Don't worry what phantom drafts are saying they don't know half as much as recruiters.
The most disappointing part of the night is we nearly got Jack Graham with our last pick but Richmond just pipped us.

What about the Ranga jinx?
Murdoch gone. Lynch left us. Gamble was no good. Daniel Archer.
Havent had a good Ranga since Jason Gram and then that ended badly.
Gram was blonde wasn't he? Or did he dye? There is also conjecture in regard to whether or not Jimmy Webster is a ranga. 'Jack' Daniels was a ranga. There haven't been many though. Must be something about being near the seaside.

Gresham is going ok with us isn't he?
And the Clarke brothers were just a case of plain bad luck of the medical kind.

Good point. We basically got them for nothing.
If we nail our picks next year we will have won handsomely.

How well have we done ?
You don't do good until you win a premiership.
That is the only measure that counts.

The more you know, the more you know you don't know.
When I was a young child, I knew that I knew so much about so much.
Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.

So we got our man. What exactly did we spot in him Jax to give us the hots for him - speed, x-factor, aboriginal explosiveness?

I'm estatic with Long.

He provides the x factor we have been missing.

Spot in Jaxons, waste of good internet time reading some of these opinions.

I heard a rumour that the Bombers were keen on Powell-Pepper but misread his name.

They thought it was Pill-Popper and he would have fitted straight into the seniors!

So we miss out on the 2 we really wanted Florent and Gallucci and the third we probably wanted... Powell-Pepper... and just missed the 4th we really wanted in Jack Graham. But apart from that we did brilliantly and nobody else has a clue what they are talking about.

Gram a definite ranga who dyed. If Jimmy qualifies then we probably drafted Ed as depth in that department.

Now this RACISM must stop.

First we have a 13 year old girl crucified for racism by the AFL and every leftie journalist in the country for calling Adam Goodes an ape.

Then we have one of her harshest critics Peter FitzSimons, you know the imbecile with the red bandana, referring to a black South African cricket official as a gorilla.
Yes the same guy who made the comment “If calling a black man a ‘gorilla’ and an ‘ape’ is not racial abuse, what the hell does it take?”

We even have football commentators referring to power forwards as gorilla's.
No wonder Buddy Franklin had mental issues.

But even worse on this forum we have people calling footballers "rangas" short for orangutans.

Disgraceful, where are our moderators when we need them.

The greatest ginger to play for the saints was Greg Packham. His headband was extraordinary. I nearly went with the Nic, "Greg Packham's Headband", bit switched to WW at the last minute.

Orangutang, ace. Orangutan. If we are going to discriminate, let's use the correct term. I believe it was originally,"rangu" before being bastardised into its current Aussie form. I'm triggered by all the mentions of discrimination in your post. I'm off to my safe space to hug my pet unicorn that s***s rainbows. :) :)

It's a type of agility, speed of thought and reaction type with slippery pace that you find in Indigenous players.
Players from Darwin have that fair also.
It's the one thing our forward line lacked when it hit the deck and I think our recruiters nailed it.
At Pick 23 the elite players in the most sought after positions are gone so go for a player in positions that clubs won't sell their top picks for and get a high quality player. I like their strategy and I will not be surprised if this kid gets into the senior team next year if he shows himself.
Josh Battle maybe a slider we are told, that's always exciting.
He has his work cut out initially to make it but good acquisition it seems.
We will know for sure in 2 to 3 years time.
Good argument.
We have a fair share of inside mids, small forwards, rebounding defenders.
Long looks a different type with some X factor that we need.
Particularly like his attack on the ball and has a good handball out of traffic.
Good pick up for our team which does need some weird s*** in the mix.
Agreed fugazi,
when you hear other clubs are furious they didnt pick up Long thats a real good sign, especially if they know him intimately like the Dogs.
I miss this type of player, so many well drilled power athletes we all love the Cyril Rioli type, its why you go the footy.

It seems this thread may have wandered a little bit off-topic !

I reckon we have done extraordinarily well in the trade period. We had no currency with players to trade - none of the six delisted senior list players and two rookies was picked up by any other club. That meant the recruiting team was left with selections 10, 46, 64, 82, 100 and 118, and a rookie selection at 10. Somehow they turned that into N Brown, J Steele, K Stevens , three exciting draftees and an interesting 200cm KPP in the rookie draft - plus a couple of Irish lads with excellent sporting backgrounds. In addition, they have managed to turn next year's second round pick into a first round .

Of course hindsight will tell us how they have gone, but right now they deserve great credit. Everyone seems to agree that, on paper at least, we have a much better list.

I will back Ben Long in to be sucessful as long as he can gain muscle without injury problems. He has the tools just needs the body to compete at the next level.

Certainly we could get huuge improvements from the following, compared to last year, if all goes well

Carlisle
Steele
Freeman
Brown
Billings
Acres
Dunstan
Stevens
McCartin

That is a lot and leaves out other possible improvements, including Long who could well be able to contribute in his first year
