Tony74 said after the end of last season that Roo chose to give it up at least partly in the interest of prolonging his career.
He's also got 2 kids that are 3 & under... they're his first priority. As good a time as any to hand the reins over.

The cat's out of the bag. They might as well announce it now

In Springfield, they are eating the dogs. The people that came in, they are eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

That's simply not true. The process is the players get polled officially then then club makes a decision. Remember Hilary had it in the bag according to everyone. Joey indicated the players were leaning towards Geary but when they actually have to vote it could change. And then the club has to weigh it up all up. Otherwise you are saying the show process is a sham which is insulting to the club.

Apparently Armo has been campaigning by saying he will deport all the Irish and NZ players from the club and build a wall around Linen House Centre. And his hair is looking really weird.

The more I think about it I absolutely know the best person to captain us next year is St Nick.
He should continue even if it's not his preferred option. End of story

And Hawthorn is going to pay for it as part of their Dingley invasion.

Plus infinity. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. Nick can have his farewell, victory lap in 2018, by which time Newnes or Ross will be ready.

Nick has been wanting to hand it over for about 5 years, maybe he's sick of it?

The record would be a poor individualistic reason to keep him on.

St Kilda will unveil Jarryn Geary as its new captain in the coming days putting an official end to the Nick Riewoldt leadership era.

The 28-year-old former rookie has won the support of his teammates and coaches as the club prepares to ratify a transformed and relatively youthful leadership group which will not include Riewoldt
.
