Careful, TB. The dopers might try that. They've injected everything else!Leo.J wrote:Like.True Believer wrote:As far as I know, Billings just finished his first proper preseason, had a chunk of last year wrecked by injury, and is still just about old enough to start shaving.

I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!
Re: Stars that were late bloomers
What is any of this suggesting
There are just as many players who can be listed that made immediate impact?
The comparisons are moot
They were all not Pick 1s
They were drafted into teams with different development systems or ladder positions
They all had different amounts of competitions for senior spots
They were not as well prepared in the junior system
They were all different sizes and played different positions

No disrespect but as ex-sportsperson to ex-sportsperson ... when were you at your peak? Had you reached your best when you entered senior competition from junior levels? For 99% of athletes, their peak comes in their mid 20s. Scientifically this is because the brain reaches full growth / maturity by the average age of 24 and in elite senior sport this coincides with peak fitness / body development. Yes - younger talented players will show flashes of brilliance but for 99% they lack week in week out brilliant consistency. The other 1% (cough Bontempelli etc) are freaks!
AwayInUSA no longer ... have based myself back in Melbourne for a decade of Saintsational Success (with regular trips back to the USA)

Re: Stars that were late bloomers
As a footballer I had two peaks
One period where I was physically in good condition, and so naive I didn't think, just played
19-21yo
Then after I got through a few injuries, understood my game better and got a lot stronger
27-32
I found similar in Cricket. I became comfortable with my game and understood it well at 27-32
As a late teen, I was carefree and played purely on instinct.
After 32 my injuries and general wear and tear slowed me down
A slip down in standard to a lower pace of game at 35+ has allowed me to keep playing
Mentally now I am possibly the strongest I've ever been, and very fresh - perhaps because I realise the end is nigh
But my body is struggling, even though I am in good shape, injuries have taken their toll.

I was asked a question by BFUSA and answered it?...
What about me is correct?
Why are you so obsessed by me?
It's fun, reading your continual jibes, and I'll continue to do so, Mr National... but I won't take you at all seriously
Because you see,
I read your posts...

Indeed, it took him 5 or 6 seasons. Didn't Michael Tuck play close to 100 reserves games before making his debut?Leo.J wrote:Jack Steven

Re: Stars that were late bloomers
Ablett (jnr) could qualify for this list. Was always regarded as a very good player but I don't think anyone imagined that he'd become one of the all time great midfielders and players (even emulating his father to an extent). He certainly wasn't Judd or The Bont. Yet in 2007, his 6th season, he went up to an incredible level.

Re: Stars that were late bloomers
Well you if you haven't written him off, stop stressing, you sound like the Prophet of Doom. Maybe you need to forget his draft position (and that of Billings) and judge them as kids that have barely played a seasons worth of games .BigMart wrote:Look at the team they were in....
Were there spots?
were they skinny?
Danger found it hard season 1 - since he remained in Victoria at school... so season 2 was season 1
What about Kosi? Sam Mitchell? Rioli? Selwood? Paul Haselby, Josh Fraser and countless examples of the opposite
What was various clubs plans with Kids
Geelong 02 gave half the 07 AFL team an introductory VFL premiership
Sydney had the 4 year apprenticeship
Ross Lyon didn't trust anyone under 22
I still haven't written McCartin off
But I'm concerned about a few limiting factors, that will inhibit his output
Even if they don't end up being the quality their draft position demands (I don't think that's inevitable, far from it). Gresham & Acres are probably going to be steals as late 1st rounders, we got Weller for nothing, Sinclair as a rookie, Bruce & Membrey for bugger all.
In our list build we have sorted out the bookends and KPP stocks, the hardest part. We have an abundance of ruckmen and good depth. Our list still has needs, in midfield and probably a running defender. We get an opportunity to meet those needs with a huge salary cap war chest and 2 first round picks next year.
Cheer up big fella.

Actually talking off late developers, The G-Train fits that category, much like Paddy, abused by supporters(mainly at West Coast), but was a very late developer and proves his worth at the saints, just like Paddy will!!!!!

Re: Stars that were late bloomers
What about that forward fisher we took at aged 21 at pick 50 odd. Didn't look that flash early on. Should not have persisted with him.
Re: Stars that were late bloomers
Fisher looked great from his first VFL game which I watched... also the first game at Casey Fields
He played CHF and looked like an AFL player playing VFL straight away, he was a class above
Not bad from a guy who didn't play footy from 16-18 for 3 years to pursue golf
Two years with South Adelaide (I think a senior premiership) and into the AFL
Fish was a senior regular early ... in his third year he finished third in the b&f
