We need an accumulator
I know we're all crying out for outside run and speed, but it seems we don't have, as a group, players who get big numbers week in, week out. It was most noticeable in round one where the Dee's smashed us in possessions and it seems the best sides have three to four players who rack up high twenties, early thirties in number, game after game. WCE acquired Mitchell for such a purpose. Slow as a wet week, he nevertheless regularly clocks up thirty plus possessions, most of them good. The Dee's got us with Jones, Viney, Oliver and even Stretch, who all got big numbers against us.
It seems that not long ago, three hundred possessions a game was enough, with a ratio of two kicks to each handball. Now it seems the pass nark is more like four hundred, with 250/150, kick to handball ratio. I guess the rationale is that while we've got it we have control. Apart from Jackie boy, only Seb Ross seems to accumulate healthy numbers regularly. Dunstan is a workhorse with a specific role, clearing the path for others and winning the inside contest. Ditto, Armo. Who do we have that could develop into the role? Acres, for one. Maybe Koby Stevens or Jack Billings.
Perhaps we should've gone for Tom Rockliffe in the off season. Regularly posts 30+, even in a poor side. We could actually get him for nothing at the end of the year as he becomes a free agent. Would he be worth a gamble given his proven ball winning ability? We could still nail another FA, or Whitfield type via trade, while still hanging onto a first rounder. Thoughts?

Re: We need an accumulator
Should we have considered trading Armo for Rockliff last year? They wanted him gone!

Re: We need an accumulator
Could it be because the majority of our midfielders used sparingly?
Mins:disposals
Acres - 78 / 21
Steele - 88 / 20
Dunstan - 73 / 11
Ross - 98 / 36 (that's elite for mins vs disposals)
Billings - 94 - 28 (that's high mins for him)
Compared to:
Rockliff - 104 / 33
Zorko - 104 / 26
Beams - 103 / 25
Kennedy - 108 / 33
Priddis- 111 / 29
Parker - 111 / 29
Bont - 106 / 25
Kelly - 106 / 30
Mcgath - 108 / 28 (in his 4th game)

Re: We need an accumulator
Is Rockliff's reputation as a corkhead justified, or is it just that he couldn't get along with the coach? Had he alway had a reputation for being difficult or was it a recent thing? They did make him captain, after all. He appears to have taken the loss of the captaincy in his stride. It certainly hasn't hurt his output. If he comes free to a good home, then he might be worth a chance.

Re: We need an accumulator
I was at the Gabba and was impressed with the running and creative field kicking of Beams. Hadn't seen him live before. Rockcliffe and Zorko got a lot of it too but Beams stood out for me

I think Ross and Steele will be good accumulators for the next five years +.

Re: We need an accumulator
What?
Saintrising...
Lovett - a drunk, smoker, couldn't run 3km, never finished top 5 in a b&f, rarely top 10 as he was an inconsistedown hill skier and a known woman basher!!!! And we gave up a First Rounder and a Million
Rockliff - A dual b&f winner, captain, ball magnet who has been a great player for 6 seasons
His biggest crime is he is a poor leader, and a bit dumb. For a 28yo with a rooted body?
I think that's a ridiculous comparison
You should probably think before you type... and calling someone BiPolar is a slight on people with a difficult mental disorder...
And it was just a question I posed, did you not get that???

Re: We need an accumulator
Rockliff is no Lovett, but not the type of person required at St.Kilda, more than a poor leader!!!!!
