Gilbo in the Ruck
Deserves its own thread.
As fireman (is he a stripper or an actual fireman?) will point out, I have occasionally been a tad critical of Gilbo but the idea of him as a utility/ruck really appeals to me.
The new Jason Blake role. Similar to Blicavs but an inch shorter.
We all agree that Carlisle or Bwoose in the Ruck is far far from ideal.
Given Gilbo normally plays a kind of utility role and sometimes doesnt get a stack of ball - chucking him in the ruck seems a stroke of genius!
At very least it buys us time while Marshall develops.
I give it the thumbs up for the rest of the season!

Gilbo rucking allows Bwoose to do his thing in the F50
without getting stretched and banged up in the ruck, which he can't do,
despite all his best efforts. he tries hard, he does, but ruck- no
Gilbo 2nd ruck is the best move from the coaches in the last 2 years

Re: Gilbo in the Ruck
As I've written a number of times, anyone on our list, yes anyone (including Lonie) would be way better than 'one man short' Billy in the 1st ruck position. Happy to rove to their ruckman, so we can then have 22 blokes, not 21 on the field. And I agree with Mart, not worried if the Bruce doesn't get too many taps - again, just rove to the opposition ruck. The only prob with Bruce rucking, is if it's robbing him of a much needed breather on the bench.
But Gilbo' in the ruck does seem an excellent choice. As Con pointed out, invokes memories of Jason Blake. And they're some memories worth invoking.

Do we have a more versatile player? Defender, midfielder, winger, forward. Now ruck.

Re: Gilbo in the Ruck
Great call. He's jack of all trades, master of none but that's his value. Thought he was great today and kudos to the coaching staff thinking outside of the square. The opposition would have had no idea that was coming. Maybe that can be our thing now. A random 2nd ruck every week. Nathan Brown next week or The Gresh. Seriously though what I liked with Gilbo in the ruck was the second efforts afterwards. He bulldozed his way through to the drop of the ball creating space around him. Very clever.bigcarl wrote:Do we have a more versatile player? Defender, midfielder, winger, forward. Now ruck.

Looked good in that role..it's a wonder they did not try it until now. and as a plus if he becomes the new Jason Blake he still ends up the whipping boy, just to keep some happy!

Re: Gilbo in the Ruck
Was really shocked when I first saw it, but against someone like McEvoy, his use of body was good enough to just about nullify any height advantage, and his efforts on the ground were pretty good. Didn't realise his potential to play alright at any spot on the ground, just another string to his how I guess

Re: Gilbo in the Ruck
I thought he was average. The Mitchell goal was directly because of lack of presence in the ruck.
Having said that, I find the second ruck role bout as significant as most coaches do... it gives the ruckmen a rest, that's about it

Re: Gilbo in the Ruck
Gilbert is actually playing the Ruck Rover role which is non existent today and he did it beautifully.
Not meant to win may taps but can run and carry the ball. Is good below his feet and can't take a mark. Leave Bruce at full forward where he can concentrate on kicking goals. When McCartin comes in he should play half forward. He only needs another bag of 5 before he comes in.

How average vs. Bruce? Bruce has lead to many opposing team clearances whenever he goes in the ruck too.BigMart wrote:I thought he was average. The Mitchell goal was directly because of lack of presence in the ruck.

Exactly.
Bruce in the ruck gives you a poor ruck contest and then poor on the ground at the contest.
Gilbert may lose the ruck too, but he is then very good at the contest.
Gilbert as the relief ruck is a much better option just in that role PLUS it leaves Bruce as a Key Forward which means that Bruce who already runs a lot will not be as stuffed as he has been.
However personally I would also be mixing it up with Carlisle playing relief ruck at times.

Re: Gilbo in the Ruck
I liked the move but it still leaves us short a long term fix to this problem...
Lots of love for Marsh and to degree Pierce but it's unclear how they get into the team when not rucking

Re: Gilbo in the Ruck
Yes like it. Gilbo got those long arms which gives him surprising reach and has the althleticism to cleverly stretch. 6 hit outs was better than Bruce's 2 last week and Bruce seemed a lot more comfortable focusing on his forward game.
Other teams have been playing non-rucks in that relief ruck role. With ARmo out another big body around the ball came in really handy. Proceed Mr Swiss ARmy Knife man! We keep trying to get you out of the team, but you keep finding a new implement to use.

Re: Gilbo in the Ruck
Absolutely fantastic to see gilbo in the ruck! Totally evokes the Jason Blake role gilbo is tough as a cats head, his knockers can't deny that!! Relief tuck is absolutely perfect for him!! Ps Longer was again like playing with 21 in general play. He actually seems even more useless around the ground than in 2015!! And he barely broke even with hitouts again macevoy, one of the less daunting tap ruckman in the Comp...surely hockey back in. Please richo!!

Didn't we criticise Blake in the Ruck
Or is that just another legend that evolves over time???

We criticised the fact that we had absolutely no one else, so blake ended up in the ruck against players like Sandilands.BigMart wrote:Didn't we criticise Blake in the Ruck

We now have two proper tap ruckmen, however we can't play both at the same time.

I clearly remember the Blake giving that tall streak of misery, Sandilands a real hiding in the ruck one year.

Re: Gilbo in the Ruck
I like Gilbo in the ruck. Effectively he becomes another mid.
I reckon Bruce has in recent weeks only kept his spot because he was the 2nd ruck option. Now we have another option. Having said that , I thought Bruce did enough to hold his spot yesterday - but he needs to actually start holding contested marks.
