Positives: McCartin was good
15 touches.
9 marks.
2 shots at goal.
2 inside 50s.
Was in the right places.
Had foul delivery all day, and had Dale Morris following him around most of the day.

He was not good... but was so not far from it...
IF he takes those 2 easy marks and kicks true and ends with 11 marks and 3 goals then his game could be classified as "good"
As it is.. lets settle for "showed something" or "better"

Re: Positives: McCartin was good
several times, one of our guys was about 60m out, and Paddy made a good lead, got in front of Morris,
but our guy either didn't see him or didn't care.
So our guys did him no favours at all.
His first goal, nobody really went to him, what rubbish from the guys to not show some support.

I thought he was far better than most of his teammates today. Too bad he's not got many opportunities with our shocking delivery inside 50m.

Re: Positives: McCartin was good
I thought he was pleasing… good that he is getting the ball in his hands, looks a bit nervous and still coming to terms with the pace of AFL footy to me.
Bruce has taken 9 marks in a game about once per year so far, so it's a pretty good effort on a dirty day for the club for forward entries.

Re: Positives: McCartin was good
As I have put before our improvement from the darker post Lyon days will revolve around our First Round Draft picks over the past couple of years being Billings, Dunstan, Acres then McCartin, Goddard then Gresham plus the players we have prised from other Clubs under competition, so Carlisle. Freeman and Steele
Then we have our core of Steven, Newnes, Ross and Armitage - and I would add Hickey to that list
So that is 14 players who carry the future of our Club on their shoulders
We need to add to that core
Players such as Roberton, Membrey, Weller, Longer, Bruce et al who we got from elsewhere without competition from their previous Clubs trying to retain them or other Clubs not also interested I view as cream on the cake if they establish aka Roberton who now performs at a high level consistently
Then we have our Second Round picks where we hope to snag a couple under the radar - so think Sam Fisher
It is a ruthless business in which you turn and turn and turn looking for gems in the haystack of talent
Given the core we have, plus a further two Round One picks in prospect at the end of this season we are
building our base for a decent crack over a period of years
We also plug the List with the likes of Stevens and Brown to give transitory support thru the development phase - and to over injuries
So, in my view, that is where we currently are
Plus we have our 3 veterans in Roo, Montagna and Gilbert to shepherd us thru - at least in the short term
And to provide leadership
In regards leadership, whilst those 3 remain I would be doing what the SACA have done with Travis Head then at just 20 years of age and saying to one of the core we have established to lead
Head is now 3 seasons in and has led a young side to successive Shield finals
An inspired and bold decision

Re: Positives: McCartin was good
Positive signs.
We need to persevere with him imo. Bring Bruce back as chf, leave Paddy at ff. Get some structure in place.
Nine marks is a fair effort from a developing forward, especially in a team that got well and truly spanked.

If we a lauding a one goal game
1/ it's patronising
2/ we really are in fairy land and dreaming
3/ we are clutching at straws
Up until 3 qtr time he was poor. He received ironic cheers in the third when he took a mark on the wing. Had a strong last q when the game was done.

No one's lauding it. All I'm seeing is some positivity and optimism about the guy's future. They take time to find their feet at this level and yesterday was a first step.BigMart wrote:If we a lauding a one goal game

Promising game from paddy. Nothing matters until the midfield is fixed up. Slow as treacle. Get enough ball but no run at all apart Steven who struggled yesterday

Re: Positives: McCartin was good
Work rate a tick, would have hot a lot more ball if the midfield had even half a clue on how to deliver the ball. The amount of times he had ten metres on his opponent only for us to bomb it to a contest was laughable.
His hands were a concern, dropped easy marks holds a couple and he would have had three to four goals. Has better hands than this but needs to improve it as he is a liability at ground level.

Ignore the unwashed - Paddy was good. He worked really hard and led well all day - often into space where he demanded the ball but was ignored.Johnny Member wrote:15 touches.

Unfortunately our mids are not going the first option but looking around and then going back to the first option who is then no longer free. Paddy's moving well and defensively playing his part in the team structures.
None of the forwards yesterday were the reason we lost the match!

Re: Positives: McCartin was good
Just gotta keep playing the big fella and find out once and for all if he's gonna cut it at the level.
For what it's worth I think he'll make it......and hopefully that last qtr gives him some belief in this own mind that he can contribute positively.
Yesterday was a step forward imo , all be it a small one.
Cmon Paddy , I'm backin ya!!!!

Re: Positives: McCartin was good
Just to focus on McCartin is wrong.
As I have put, including on this thread, we look at the build of a team, of which McCartin is a very important part.
McCartin will not win us games - this is AFL footy, not a singles tennis competition or a golf tournament.
So focus on McCartin as a component of "team" and in context of the overall progress being made by the List we are assembling and which will serve us for the next generation.

Re: Positives: McCartin was good
I know many bag Paddy.
But you can see from the way he plays that he is a smart footballer. Even little things like how he taps the ball to a team mate rather than take possession when he knows he would be tackled (other team mates should emulate this more). He knows when and wear to lead. He is a good marl even if a little down on confidence.
Personally I have no doubt that as his fitness and strength builds that he will become at least a good player, and quite possibly more. This will take a few more seasons of steady improvement.
He is on a slow build, bit that is more common than not for bigger bodied forwards like him.
PS: He could have easily kicked a few more including one early when Gresham slotted in front of Paddy where Gresh dropped an easy mark with Paddy second in line 30m out straight in front.

Can't agree there..... we've sent him clunk a few beauties over his short journey.magnifisaint wrote:His hands are too soft.
No reason not to think he can get it back.....I'm hoping when his confidence is back he'll start clunkin them again.
C'mon Paddy
Re: Positives: McCartin was good
Also seen him drop marks, in the infra club, in the VFL and in the AFL
Yes, he clunks the odd one, so did Kosi... he also double grabs the majority
