My Top 20 Current Player Rankings

Post: # 1674547Post Con Gorozidis »

This is how I currently rank our playing list. It is based on current form, past form and gut feel for the future.
It is how I precede with contract and salary cap negotiations. Anyone outside the top 20 I would only be giving minimum wage and short (1-2 year) contracts to.

Great thread - this should be how salary is determined but problem is it constantly changes!!

I'd have Gilbert and Brown lower and Longer added around 15 or so. I've been super impressed with him even though he doesn't get a lot of love from others. Just a monster in the ruck, which is what I value from a ruckman. The rest of his game will come.

McKenzie is one who I think will be a great weapon for us. Developing and has a lot of tools.

On first glance, too high, and by far in some instances, are Membrey, Webster, Brown and Geary.

And too low are Acres and Hickey.

I reckon Geary might struggle to get a game next year if Rice and White come on...

I could see a backline of

Webster Brown Rice
White Carlisle Roberton

Acres has plenty of upside and Hickey could rise in to the top 10 and it wouldnt surprise me in the least.
I think Membrey,, Webster and Brown have all been fairly reliable this year. I think we have really missed Webster the last two weeks.

So you would have a guy who does not man up and on whom the opposition does not man up on because they want the ball in his hands at Number 5 in the Club?

There is our problem

Geary's position has to transition to White, McKenzie or Rice - and the quicker the better

It's an interesting exercise - and slightly deflating.

If you grab the 2009 list and do the same exercise, it's a sharp contrast in quality at the top end. Really highlights the cream that we are missing to become serious contenders.

I seem to be the only Mav supporter in this forum.
Fortunately the coaching staff and playing group see Mav's contribution my way.
Guess his last two B&F finishes were a fluke.

On current form, and what else can you go by, Hickey should not be there, replace him with Longer. Gilbert should be in the top 10, and Roberton about 5.
On his form this year perhaps Bruce should not be in our top 20.

I will re-phrase it a little and list the 20 players on our CURRENT List who will be vital to St Kilda consistently challenging over future years:-

(NB: I have excluded our 3 veterans who remain vital to our 2017 season and, definitely in regards Gilbert at least, in 2018)

Steven
Carlisle
Billings
Mc Cartin
Acres
Freeman
Ross
Steele
Newnes
Dunstan
Armitage
Hickey
Gresham
Bruce
Roberton
White
Webster
Mc Kenzie
Goddard
Rice

We will be using First Round Drfat Picks and we will be trading so the List will change.

But, currently, our future is in the hands of these players.

So fit those names into side and see what you come up with - and where the holes are!!!

and just two weeks ago some were suggesting our current list actually compares quite favourably.

There is a very basic assumption at work, that being we have to purge players the OPPOSITION wants to see the ball in the hands of.

If I recall , it was more in reference to the bottom half, say players 12-22 on the current list stacked up favourably. You could argue a case potentially for that.

What about 2004? If we had this twenty, the premiership would be ours. How we didn't win in 2004 still bothers me more than 2009. Check out this 20.

Riewoldt
Harvey
Hayes
DalSanto
Jones
Koschitzke
Ball
Gehrig
Milne
Hamill
Montagna
Goddard
Black
Hudghton
Penny
McGuire
Guerra
Voss
Powell
Lawrence

That's without a ruckman! How did we not win?!

Wow that 2004 list is light years ahead of the current one. Here's hoping the players will develop sufficiently to rival that list by 2019 or so.

I have always believed that if Penny stayed fit we would have won in 04.
The guy was an absolute gun. Top shelf. Was a huge blow losing him. Totally under rated player.

Next year? They have one game between them at this stage and Geary is the captain and finishing top 5 in the B&F consistently as it sits.
