Our young forwards average 1 - 1.5 goals per game
It shows since Roo went out
We are not getting it done forward of the ball

Putting Riewoldt in the forward line is not the answer to this. We need to persevereBigMart wrote:Our young forwards average 1 - 1.5 goals per game

And yes
Roo forward is not the answer... although he should spend minutes there during games.
Paddy is not athletic enough, or explosive enough to work over defenders or get off them easily

Re: Still no Credit for Paddy!!!!!
I don't agree.
The problems forward of the ball, are caused by what happens behind the ball.
If that makes sense.
Roo only had 5 shots at goal in his two games since the GWS win.
McCartin has had 6 in his past two games since the GWS win.
Paddy had 5 marks, 15 touches and 4 shots at goal last night. All with Tahlia on him. All in an absolute wallopping where the delivery was a debacle.
Bruce had 7 marks and also 5 shots at goal from only 13 touches. He had the 2nd string defender on him.
McCartin was one of our best last night. Not a high benchmark, but he was one of the very few positives.
Nice to see him try to hurt someone too.

I know no ifs, buts or maybes...
But if Paddy had kicked his 3 set shots I think we'd be looking at has game very differently...

Re: Still no Credit for Paddy!!!!!
Not really. I'd still see him as a limited player who is a lead, mark, kick player.skeptic wrote:I know no ifs, buts or maybes...

If his set shots are poor then that means he isnt even that good at being a lead, mark, kick player.
It is what happens when the mark is dropped or spoilt that truly worries me about his game style and athleticism.
I dont care if he doesnt take a single mark in a game. His lack of follow up when it hits the ground is truly worrying.
Our atrocious ball movement from stoppages certainly isnt helping his lead, mark, kick style though.
How the hell can you make a decent lead when the opposition have big numbers back defending and our mids are handballing in circles with one another?

Rooey, Goddard and possibly Hodge that I can think of.
Certainly not Goddard. Took a few years to come good. He was very young. Copped a bagging in his first couple of years

Paddy has never been the greatest shot for goal.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Re: Still no Credit for Paddy!!!!!
Our problems are midfield, midfield and midfield and then ruck.
Way after that is our forward line and way after that the backline

Re: Still no Credit for Paddy!!!!!
I thought Ruck was a strength we have two genuine dominant AFL ruckmen don't we?
And I thought we added midfield power this season, and fixed that area
And we have two AFL key defenders too
On Paddy
Kicking is part of the package... he missed a couple of easy goals, no different to spilling easy marks.
He presented to the footy ok, doesn't get muck split ... fact is, he never scored as a key forward
I actually think he is better off up the ground s bit. Too easy to defend deep.

I don't think he is going to make it.
Watched him closely tonight.
I am a knocker.
For a pick 1 in the draft he has several glaring problems with his game and athleticism and I have genuine serious concerns about how much he will improve.
Feel free to bookmark this.
Hard to see how he was pick 1 with such a limited one dimensionsal game. His flaws are very obvious to see.

Re: Still no Credit for Paddy!!!!!
Let's blame the Key Forwards, that makes sense, NOT!!!!!
Even the great Key Forwards have and will always rely on quality delivery, end of story, it's not hard to tell who the midgets on this forum are!!!!!
Paddy was good last night, so was Bruce, end of story!!!!!

Re: Still no Credit for Paddy!!!!!
Not all U/18 players go on with it in the Big League, regardless of what draft number their name was called out.Junior wrote:Just as a matter of interest how many number one picks have ends up the best in their draft year?
Rooey, Goddard and possibly Hodge that I can think of.
McCartins game was fine for a young key forward other than his goal kicking tonight, presented well got the ball at ground level multiple times after contesting the mark. On top of this he is a lovely kick in general play and showed clean hands at ground level .
Is never going to be a tackling chasing forward but showed enough, would also be handy if we could kick the thing to his advantage.
All the recruiters must be clueless according to a lot of you on here as Paddy and Petracca were considered the stand out two.
The one thing I did not think I would read after last nights game was Paddy copping it.
Because Paddy's name was called out first, in his draft year, means his failure to look capable at this level is highlighted more than it would if he was a 3rd round pick.
The other tall we got in Paddy's year is not doing much this year either.
The real concern is the lack of talls coming through the U/18's year after year.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?
Re: Still no Credit for Paddy!!!!!
At the end of the day, power forwards need to hit the scoreboard or provide a contest for the smells to hit the contest
Bruce 4
McCartin 0
Billings 1
Gresham 0
Membrey 0
Not sure if Weller scored, think he missed 2?
And Jake Lever, Brodie Smith, Rory Laird were 3 of the best 6 on the ground... so forwards were well beaten
And you can't say, well he had shots so he played well... he plays well if he kicks the goals, not if he has shots... if we are celebrating points, we have just lost the plot ... Paddy was given some slight praise by Richo, that's all he really deserved
He did not nail two straight forward goals...
He was however far better than Membrey

Re: Still no Credit for Paddy!!!!!
I too am worried about Paddy, just seems like there are a few big holes in his game, and I'm not sure where the improvement is going to come from. Name another young forward who Paddy looks like being a better player than?
Also watching Petracca tear it up at the G right now is not pleasant, I feel this will be the biggest disaster of the whole Paddy thing...

Re: Still no Credit for Paddy!!!!!
I think our game plan is leaving our fwds horribly out numbered. So Paddy and the other fwds are not getting a fair crack. We arent giving them the chance to succeed.The_Dud wrote:I too am worried about Paddy, just seems like there are a few big holes in his game, and I'm not sure where the improvement is going to come from. BUT
There are some objective reasons to ask questions about Paddy
1) he's not that tall.
2) poor tank
3) he's not that fast
4) he isnt great when the ball hits the deck keeping his feet and staying in the contest
5) his set shots are not good
6) he isnt all that agile

Re: Still no Credit for Paddy!!!!!
I agree and there is a lesson to be learnt to pick the most talent youngster as No. 1 in the draft. I've already posted on Petracca in the Opposition Forum watching him again today. The poise and skill he shows leaves me in no doubt that he will be elite and a likely future Brownlow medalist. Our recruiters went against football commonsense in a few draft picks unfortunately.The_Dud wrote:I too am worried about Paddy, just seems like there are a few big holes in his game, and I'm not sure where the improvement is going to come from. Re: Still no Credit for Paddy!!!!!
Still happy with our selection, Petracca was good, yes, but still refuses to chase, turned his back on team-mates in better postion and missed (twice) and cracked the s***s with the coaching staff (several times)!!!!!
As good as he is, it's still about Christian, but good luck to him!!!!!
No tank either, what about Jack Watts, how'd he go today?????
