It's a bit rubbish to claim this now, especially given the actual number of marks is a mystery. I'm sure Roo will surpass it anyway.NICK RIEWOLDT'S march towards the all-time marks record has been delayed by a statistical anomaly that has only just come to light.
Col Hutchinson – the AFL's statistics and history consultant – has discovered that Riewoldt will take a little longer than anticipated to claim the record because Dempsey's tally is incomplete.
Hutchinson has found that one Dempsey performance remains unaccounted for.

Re: Roo record in question
A bit rubbish?
It's complete and utter crap. If there's no record of how many marks were taken in a particular game, then for all intents and purposes they didn't happen. Same as if the statisticians missed one or more mark taken, attributed a mark to the wrong player, etc, etc
History is what got recorded. You can't "assume" that a player did anything if you had no record. How can we even be sure that Dempsey took the field?

I'm surprised they were even keeping the stats going back that far to tell you the truth.

What rot.
The record is the record.
There's nothing to say that statistians haven't made errors every week and that he's already broken the record or he's actually 150 off the pace still.
Point is, the record is the record. It's on paper.

I exchanged a couple of emails with him many years ago on a goal kicking question.saintspremiers wrote:So I just checked up on dear old Col.

More than just rabid - he hasn't missed a Geelong game since the early 60's.
