Paddy misses 2 weeks with concussion!
http://m.afl.com.au/news/2017-07-06/mcc ... on-lingers
OMG this is an unmitigated disaster.
2 weeks out with concussion, and from reports from those at the game it wasn't that bad on the day.
Sorry I'm not sold on him anymore. Signs are terrible. If this isn't the knock to end his flailing career I reckon the next concussion is.
Tick. Tick. Tick......

If you know anything about concussion then you will know that's not all about taking a headache tablet. The after affects can last for months - diabetes or no diabetes.
He probably should wear some sort of protective headgear

Clearly if it did that would be an option already.

Re: Paddy misses 2 weeks with concussion!
Koladajsni from Gold Coast is also missing his second week in a row due to concussion.
Angus Brayshaw, Melb's No.3 pick, is listed as indefinite due to concussion.
Paddy's most recent concussion was quite a hard knock to the head and nowadays concussions are treated more seriously and so they should be.
Its frustrating and I would suggest more frustrating for Paddy than it is for us.
Get behind the kid instead of writing him off.

Bit of an overreaction don't you think?Jamie Cox wrote:The doctors are really happy with how Paddy is recovering. He has been training well, is feeling fine physically and isn't displaying any symptoms.
However, according to the testing he is still just a fraction off 100 per cent.

Or maybe stu's short-term memory is just a fraction off 100 percent?

I would suggest the club must be racist.
Paddy has a strong indigenous heritage.
That's my theory anyway, and I admit I have made mistakes before,
I don't claim to be a perfectionist

Its frustrating but Paddy has time on his side. Hopefully he can get a run of games together at some stage and show us what he has threatened too.

Move him on and find someone else.
Is that what people are hinting at.
Sometimes this place is on par with the Herald Sun, but most times it's a lot worse...

Re: Paddy misses 2 weeks with concussion!
Forget about his playing future, for the moment. I'm starting to be concerned for his long term health. He doesn't want to end up like Greg Williams who is suffering from the early signs of dementia in his early 50's due to all the head knocks he got. Put him in cotton wool for the rest of the year and start preseason early for 2018. We've done ok without him so I doubt his presence will make a huge difference for the rest of the year. Another couple of hard knocks and it's over. I don't for a minute believe what's coming out of the club. It changes from day to day. Of course they're giving us the PR line, but there is real cause for long term concern now. Seven concussions in four years is borderline career ending.

Re: Paddy misses 2 weeks with concussion!
That's probably the righ thing to do - except how many years do we 'put him in cotton wool?' Seems like every year there's an issue where we 'put him in cotton wool'. He's played 3 years for 22 games. For a #1 draft pick, that's a terrible return. Having said that Tom Hawkins didn't hit his straps until the end of his 5th season. I'm clinging onto anything I can.White Winmar wrote:Forget about his playing future, for the moment. I'm starting to be concerned for his long term health. I'm with you, Moods. It's a huge worry and deep down I 'm worried it might be game over. 22 games in three years, coupled with some very peculiar "management" makes me feel there's a lot we've not been told. His development has been curtailed as much by a lack of continuity as anything else. What is the most number of senior games he's played in a row? Four or five? That's terrible for any young player's development , let alone one who carries the extra pressure of being a number one pick. I hope he's ok. As I mentioned , I don't care anymore whether he makes it or not. I just hope he's not permanently disabled by all the concussions.

I agree. Paddy's selection is a sunk cost. Nothing can be done about it.White Winmar wrote:I'm with you, Moods. The opportunity cost is the guy living with headaches for the rest of his life and dementia way too young.
It's easy for us to say and would be an awfully tough decision for him to make, but I hope he is getting some advice that there is more to life than footy and that he should consider seriously giving the game away. He has never made an impact on our team, so all we would be losing is the predicted value he could add to us.
Fingers crossed for the young man. He should take the opportunity he has now while he is contracted to take the steps towards his life after footy, because it might be real soon

Re: Paddy misses 2 weeks with concussion!
As I've posted before, I suggest that many of you should try to get over the fact that McCartin was a #1 draft pick. Once the pick is made, he's just another player on our list.
His health and well-being should always be the number one priority. The next most important concern is that he be developed in a way that he achieves the most he can achieve.
We're going ok without him. If he can deliver something at AFL standard, it's a bonus: as it is with any drafted player. Some make it, some don't (including umpteen top ten draft picks). A recruiter will be aiming to get more right than wrong, but it will always be an imperfect science.

Re: Paddy misses 2 weeks with concussion!
When he last went down I must admit I thought that could very well be it.
Without knowing anything about it, I would guess the management plan would be along the lines of:
* get knocked out you get a test and resume as normal
* second or third concussions test and monitor carefully
* any subsequent concussions longer and longer recovery period
* after which recommendation to discontinue
Again, I obviously don't know what I'm talking about, but my guess would be if the above is in any way accurate, Paddy is in the second last stage.
If he doesn't come back wearing a helmet, for even just that 5% extra protection (and perhaps any change of behavior it might bring) I would be surprised.

Re: Paddy misses 2 weeks with concussion!
Paddy's long-term health is all that matters. He should be rested for the remainder of the season, as every head knock he gets will just compound the issue and the results will be felt down the track.
It might sound radical, but I think he should be encouraged to get out of playing altogether and into AFL umpiring.

Re: Paddy misses 2 weeks with concussion!
Take all the emotion and excuses out of it and ask yourself if you expected Paddy to be more advanced for a number 1 pick nearly 3 years and 3 pre seasons into his career. I certainly did. I personally find it concerning his highest goal tally in the AFL is still only 2 for a genuine forward.
Forget about the reasons. There have been plenty. I was expecting him to be an easy best 22 contributing 3 or 4 goals every now and then, whilst contributing weekly, at this stage of his career.
Don't take this as I want him gone or anything like that. I love it when he's picked to play and keep hoping this will be the week he kicks 4 or 5. We desperately need him to suceed.
I'm just not convinced he'll be a great forward, or even make it at this stage. Alot of questions still. Didn't expect there to be as many 3 years in. Was hoping the general concensus by now was that he is going to be a very good player. It's not unfortunately. And unfortunately for Paddy he's a number 1 pick.
Hopefully he has a break out game before seasons end.
