Compare the pair
Webster
Carelessly puts his fingers in the face of a Freo player.
Contact incidental.
Doesn't make eye contact but not a good look.
MRP views it as careless and potentially dangerous - 2 week penalty.
And so sets a precedent for protecting the eyes.
Martin
Approaches his opponent from behind.
Runs his hand across his opponents head.
Vision from the other side so unclear if fist is open or closed.
Contact is incidental.
Opponent goes down holding his eye.
Unclear if eye contact is actually made or not, but clearly hand/fist was in the general area.
No penalty.
One wonders what might have happened if Webster was a Brownlow favourite?

Re: Compare the pair
Typical Double Standards. The AFL should appeal but won't. It's all about brand protection with Dusty being a Brownlow contender.
"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

Re: Compare the pair
Didn't see any eye contact in the Dusty one. Just a slight whack to side of head. If one of our players got done for that we'd all be pissed off. Webster's was way worse and very stupid.

Re: Compare the pair
I still maintain that Jimmy was attempting to pull the ear of his opponent - but as I said at the time - he was stupid to put his hands deliberately anywhere anothers face, it only takes the movement of the others head and you are into dangerous territory.Darth Vader wrote:Didn't see any eye contact in the Dusty one. I still think that Cotchin, Dusty and countless others have been treated lighter because they are the 'stars' of the competition

Are you implying the Webster suspension was unfair?Enrico_Misso wrote: One wonders what might have happened if Webster was a Brownlow favourite?
If so, you'd have thought the club would have challenged it.
Webster was stupid and unecessesary and got his correct sentence in my opinion.

Re: Compare the pair
I think Enrico was more pointing out that the 'non-penalty' of Dusty was the issue, and therefore if Jimmy was the Brownlow favourite, would he have benefitted from a more lenient treatment.Joffa Burns wrote:Are you implying the Webster suspension was unfair?Enrico_Misso wrote: One wonders what might have happened if Webster was a Brownlow favourite?

Re: Compare the pair
Didn't the AFL (read: muppets) bring in the rule that if the incident occurs behind play/off the ball, it is automatically deemed intentional?!
I'm pretty sure that that was the case.
So, if my memory is correct about this the MRP, and by extension the AFL, have acted corruptly to ensure Martin did not get suspended.

The AFL is a billion dollar business.Selhurst Saint wrote:Typical Double Standards. The AFL should appeal but won't. It's all about brand protection with Dusty being a Brownlow contender.
Tigers games usually draw crowds bigger than 40k, and when they play Bluescum, close to 70k or so.
The MRP are getting paid well, and they just don't want to "bite the hand that feeds"

Re: Compare the pair
So if the MRP decided that Martin didn't make any contact with Robertson's eye
- then why didn't they charge Robertson with staging?????????????
Has to be either contact or staging, not neither!

Didn't the decide it was careless rather than intentional? When Webster's action was found to be intentional this is simply rubbish.Enrico_Misso wrote:So if the MRP decided that Martin didn't make any contact with Robertson's eye

Re: Compare the pair
I thought this was an interesting take on the whole thing though, the writer has a fair old rant.
https://realsport101.com/news/sports/au ... -disliked/The football world released a collective sigh of relief when Brownlow fancy was let off with a fine for improper contact with Nick Robertson. The consensus amongst football fans was that common sense had prevailed, despite the fact that two weeks earlier a similar offence drew a different response from the MRP.
St Kilda's Jimmy Webster must be wondering what has changed in the fortnight since he was offered a two week ban from the same panel for the same offence. It is extraordinary the gymnastics that the MRP performs to manufacture the outcomes it desires.

Re: Compare the pair
The sooner they get rid of the fairest portion of the best and fairest and suspend the brownlow favourites (like they do anyone else) without affecting their chances of winning (albeit missing a game or two of suspension and, therefore, votes) the better.
Seriously, its just hypocritical double standards because the afl don't want to jeopardise their night of nights and I don't know why people can't see that!

We can all see it - but what can you do - I can see a thunderstorm approaching - but no matter how long and hard I yell at it - I am still going to get rained on.Jacks Back wrote:The sooner they get rid of the fairest portion of the best and fairest and suspend the brownlow favourites (like they do anyone else) without affecting their chances of winning (albeit missing a game or two of suspension and, therefore, votes) the better.

I was - Freely - you may understand the reference - but unless the children are more advanced than I was at their age - they would not grasp the concept - I could have been oh so much more graphic - lolfreely wrote:Ouch, Sainter Dad - think of the children!Sainter_Dad wrote:We can all see it - but what can you do - I can see a thunderstorm approaching - but no matter how long and hard I yell at it - I am still going to get rained on.Jacks Back wrote:The sooner they get rid of the fairest portion of the best and fairest and suspend the brownlow favourites (like they do anyone else) without affecting their chances of winning (albeit missing a game or two of suspension and, therefore, votes) the better.
