Fumble, Fumble, Apple Crumble...
What the bloody hell is wrong with these lads?!?! Their hand-eye coordination is all over the shop. I think I've seen our captain fumble the ball about half a dozen times.
People are complaining about the team's skills level, but how will they improve if we have a team of uncos?
Thoroughly cheesed off. May as well field the Sandy team next week. At least those guys have better hand-eye coordination.

Atrocious level of skills displayed last night.
The thing is these kids have far better skills than that. Second quarter of the Richmond game is evidence they are capable of much better.
It just seems they get too easily psyched out when the opposition can apply an abundance of pressure. The kids need to toughen up mentality.

Re: Fumble, Fumble, Apple Crumble...
Its that see ball / get ball mentality and it was clearly on display if you watched Luke Parker
Our guys seemed too concerned about the coming hit/tackle rather than concentrating purely on gathering the ball and then worrying about disposing of it
We not only need to toughen up mentally but physically as well with the idea that we should be going in to win the ball hoping to be hit - hoping to take one for the team and inspire each other to do the same
Patent toughness and persistence breeds confidence which boasts morale which begets belief and a winning mental edge - we have seen it a few times this year but it has yet to fully sink in

No they don't. They play the way they are coached, which is the St Kilda way.Sainternist wrote:May as well field the Sandy team next week. At least those guys have better hand-eye coordination.

So this is actually the coaches fault right there.Sainternist wrote:Atrocious level of skills displayed last night.

It's HIS job to instill confidence and guidance in what to do under adversity.
Sure, experience helps in this field a lot, but we do have enough players with enough experience for them to push through the mental side of it and stick to your guns.
Why aren't the older players standing up to the pressure?

On average this team has better skills than the 2009 and 2010 teams.
BUt as was mentioned, they get psyched out by the pressure! Mental toughness will mean executing skills better. Dont let the pressure crack you.

You may be right on the money with that observation. For a team that made grand finals in back-to-back years, it certainly had its fair share of players who sloppy on a skills level and perhaps barely on the cusp of being AFL standard. To RL's credit, he had his men very well drilled and quite mentally tough. Of course he also had a more mature team. I think the youngest players were around 24 or 25 years of age.ralphsmith wrote:On average this team has better skills than the 2009 and 2010 teams.
On the other hand, Richo's lads would be a fair bit younger on average. Also, the average player seems to possess better skills in most areas. Hopefully that mental toughness of the 2009-10 teams will start to develop fairly soon.

Just as well - his men needed to be mentally tough and well-drilled to cope with a 0-10 start to the year last year - one of the worst starts in AFL history, from a team that has a significant home ground advantage. Freo (a fair) way to go!Sainternist wrote:To RL's credit, he had his men very well drilled and quite mentally tough. Of course he also had a more mature team. (Also, how well-drilled were we when we were laying zero forward 50 tackles week after week in 2011 under RL?
I think our distant memories sometimes travel through a confirmation bias filter - are unduly amplified, and are drowning out the much more recent ones that should be resounding much louder, to wit the 0-10 start only last year).

He's had his teams very well drilled initially, but breaks them in the process. His style of game is too taxing physically for any sort of longevity in maintaining a champion team.samoht wrote:Just as well - his men needed to be mentally tough and well-drilled to cope with a 0-10 start to the year last year - one of the worst starts in AFL history, from a team that has a significant home ground advantage. It would seem he did us a HUGE favour in walking at the end of 2011. I dread to think what would have become of us if he had remained at the helm much longer. Freo are displaying that hypothetical for us right now.
