Caught out down back.
One disappointing aspect of our gameplan is that our defenders tend to drift too far up when we have possession.
Got caught out several times today with a turnover/intercept in our forward line which turned into easy Eagle goals as they ran the ball the length of the ground and our forward drifting defenders nowhere to be seen.
This is a flaw in our gameplan/execution that is hurting us.

It would not matter as much if we did not leave the middle of the ground so open.
Against the Dons it cost us hugely.

Re: Caught out down back.
We create more forward turnovers that any other side I think, most commentators acknowledge we are one of the better sides at holding the ball inside our fifty and creating turnovers
It's hard to have your cake and eat it , but agree we need to adjust a little ....to block off the corridor were teams can get through too easily when we press hard
I know many will disagree but our game plan stacks up, AR can coach .....our main issue has been missing set shots , tho I'm sure the naysayers still want to get rid of the coach half of the young players and the recruiting staff.
What is good that our best players are now starting to be the 22 year olds, rather than the older pkayers

Re: Caught out down back.
It was a major concern yesterday and nearly cost us the game. Richo needs to do a lot of work on guarding the back of packs at throw-ins..it was too easy for WCE guys to get the ball out into the corridor and into their forward linesaintsRrising wrote:It would not matter as much if we did not leave the middle of the ground so open.

Re: Caught out down back.
in defence, so to speak, it was in the context of WCE having a couple of magnificent kicks out of defence e.g. Hurn and the best/class FF in Kennedy. Mitchell was clever as well and is a class act skill & decision wise (I hope our mids took notes). But yes, something to address. Nevertheless WC is a good scalp.

Re: Caught out down back.
Yes, it is disappointing to see such easy goals, but part of our success and the goals WE score is consequent to the pressure applied to the ball carrier. It is why we won. We could not do it against the bombers and physically outpointed by the swines. If for every easy goal we kick 2 then go for it!

I would like to see our forwards produce a greater effort to keep the ball in our 50

Re: Caught out down back.
Pretty sure we had 25 or so inside 50 tackles up to 3/4 time, which the commentators said was the AFL all time record in the first 3 quarters. In Richo's message to members he mentioned 33 or something was the final number - our season average is 13.8, we're ranked 3rd in the comp. The Fireman wrote:I would like to see our forwards produce a greater effort to keep the ball in our 50
There's not much more they could do yesterday.

Spot on ss with your cliche 'It's hard to have your cake and eat it', agree with you, it's just a little tinkering needed to block off the corridor when our press is on.supersaints wrote:We create more forward turnovers that any other side I think, most commentators acknowledge we are one of the better sides at holding the ball inside our fifty and creating turnovers

Agree 10k% with Loris and her assessment of your post supersaints. The effort put in by the kids last week in Adelaide, was brought along yesterday, but this time was rewarded.loris wrote:Spot on ss with your cliche 'It's hard to have your cake and eat it', agree with you, it's just a little tinkering needed to block off the corridor when our press is on.supersaints wrote:We create more forward turnovers that any other side I think, most commentators acknowledge we are one of the better sides at holding the ball inside our fifty and creating turnovers

Re: Caught out down back.
I think our main problem is capitalising when we lock it in our fifty. It's all well and good to get the tackles inside 50, but for that sort of dominance you'd expect a couple more goalsThe Fireman wrote:wow didn't realise that..just seemed to get out a bit easy a few times..will have to watch againSt Chris wrote:Pretty sure we had 25 or so inside 50 tackles up to 3/4 time, which the commentators said was the AFL all time record in the first 3 quarters. We were lucky Melbourne didn't make us pay more often.

Re: Caught out down back.
Our zoning from kick ins is woeful. West Coast scored directly from their first eight kick ins. Yesterday Melbourne went coast to coast 9 times (six from behinds, three from out on the full/mark).
So in just eight quarters of footy our opposition has gone the length of the ground to score 17 times. Our inability to defend is astonishing and it all starts with poor finishing. If you kick the goal, they don't get the ball.

How many easy goals did they get?
