Welcome to St. Kilda - Pick 8 - Nick Coffield
http://www.saints.com.au/news/2017-11-2 ... k-coffield
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dpKGNS4LxE
It was during the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships that Nick Coffield established himself as an AFL player of the future.
The talented defender came into the national carnival with good form behind him playing at TAC Cup level for the Northern Knights, but stepped it up a notch in Vic Metro colours.
He averaged 22 disposals, at 74 per cent efficiency, and four marks a game across the championships, which saw him named in the All Australian side as a defender.
Coffield is a general defender who has excellent closing speed, good game sense, solid skills and can create plenty of drive out of the back half. He ran a 2.91-second 20-metre sprint at the NAB AFL Draft Combine, which highlighted his brilliant take-off pace and movement.
At 190cm, Coffield is also a nice size to match up on a range of forwards, and because of his pace he can also be used to shut down quicker, smaller types who present a threat. He averaged 21 disposals at TAC Cup level this season and uses the ball well out of the backline. He was also captain of the Knights, highlighting his strong leadership qualities.
Coffield's ability to take the game forward was also evident in his scoring power. He averaged nearly a goal a game at TAC Cup level this season (13 in 16 appearances for the Knights), which included a four-goal haul in the opening game of the season.
The question on Coffield will be his ability to play in the midfield at the next level and whether he has the running capacity to move there more permanently than the stints he had in there this season.
Some similarities have been made between Coffield and Melbourne defender Michael Hibberd in the way Coffield can really patrol a back half and take care of a number of things at once.
Coffield came into top-15 reckoning as the year grew longer, and he's certainly in that mix with the draft inching closer.
Mobile, quick and versatile, Coffield is Mr Reliable across half-back. You can depend on him to clean up a mess, but also to start an attacking play with the ball in his hands.
Player Focus
Tall flanker/midfielder Nicholas Coffield impressed with 22 disposals (18 kicks, of which 14 were effective), five contested possessions, six marks (one contested), two goals and one score assist at the weekend.
Most impressive from the 190cm, 83kg utility was his composure and evasiveness. In a game where there was constant congestion around the ball, Coffield was the one player who looked a class above, often possessing more time and space than everyone else. He regularly took on opponents and found a way through traffic, displaying a combination of acceleration, evasion and precise timing and anticipation to go at his own pace with ball in hand without getting caught. He also displayed clean skills and cleanness at ground level.
Coffield spent the majority of the match playing off a half-back flank with some minutes in the front half late when the game was there to be won. Watching the mix of attributes Coffield demonstrated, if he can improve the contested side to his game, he has the scope to become a very damaging midfielder in the Scott Pendlebury mould.
Coffield, who is in the mix to feature inside the first two rounds of this year's AFL draft, also importantly lifted in the critical moment late in the game. With Northern down by three points at the 25-minute mark of the final quarter, Coffield, in traffic, received by hand 50m from goal, accelerated to avoid getting tackled, stopped and propped from 50m and slotted through the match-winning goal.
Name: Nicholas Coffield
Position: Midfield/Defence
Club: Northern Knights/Vic Metro
DOB: 23/10/1999
Height: 190cm
Weight: 83kg
Draft range: First round
Summary: An elite user with ball in hand and isn’t afraid to take on opponents.
Strengths:
Evasiveness
Classy ball user
Intercept marking
Reads the play well
Agility
Weaknesses:
Contested ball winning
Stoppage work
Consistency
Overall:
Coffield is composed midfielder who is one of the elite ball users in this class.
When in possession, he never appears rushed, remaining composed while using his sidestep and agility to great effect.

13. Nicholas Coffield (VIC)
Best position: General defence/inside midfield
Height, weight: 191cm, 83kg
Recruited from: Northern Knights
Projected draft range: Top 10
Similar to: James Kelly
October Ranking: 11

Classy ball user and clean kick over a variety of distances
Agility
Takes on players with his run
Clean at ground level
Clean, quick hands in close

Reading of the ball in flight
Scope to develop into midfielder
Holds his own in one-on-one contests
Weaknesses:
Unclear contested ball-winning capabilities
Inconsistent production from game to game
Tackling
Tackle pressure

Holden as in Holden Caulfield, main protagonist in Salinger's classic, Catcher in the Rye. A cult figure in the making and a very to teenage boys everywhere .

Re: Welcome to St. Kilda - Pick 8 - Nick Coffield
I'm coming around to our new man Hunter. Can obviously play, though I remain a touch concerned re his size.
Coffield is the concern. Yep, is a talent. Is tall, but I have some wonderings about how much muscle he'll be able to put on(?)
But the big big concern:
All the write ups that list pros and cons re players - list amongst his cons, actually, his main con... contested ball winning. For me, that's a absolute and immediate deal breaker for any player. They also list tackling and pressure.
If this is an issue now playing against kids... how is this bloke ever going to win contested footy (and apply pressure) when playing against AFL-bodies men???
Answer. He probably won't.
And yes, I'm very very happy to be proven wrong here Nick.

Nick Coffield may be living his dream, but it now includes an alarm ringing at 5 am and the occasional spew at training.
Welcome to life in the AFL.
St Kilda selected the highly rated Northern Knights captain with pick No. 8 in last month’s NAB AFL Draft, a spot after Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Hunter Clark.
A week into his new life at the Saints, the 18-year-old has had to adapt quickly to the early starts and the steep increase in training volume. But he wouldn’t have it any other way.
“It’s been pretty challenging. As first years we’ve been pretty light on for the work, but the conditioning is pretty hard,” Coffield told saints.com.au after his first week at the club.
“I know on my first day I did spew up because of the work.
