Marshall gone past Hickey
Well...it seems The Prospect has gone past Shaggy Dog given the selectors have named him as an emergency.
Don't be suprised if Billy Longersaurus doesn't get up for Sat arvo as is a bit sore still. Surely The Prospect would then take his place as the first ruck given he is an emergency? If they went with Bruce and Gilbert to share the ruck then I will not attend another game in 2018!
1) This doesn't bode well for Shaggy Dog in 2018 and his future although I still rate him as a ruck
2) Could this be the year of The Prospect to some degree and a turning point in his career?
3) IMO, I think The Prospect will become our no 1 ruck within 2-3 of years

Certainly remains as topical as it has been.
This has been a live issue for years now and is still well and truly unsettled.

Interesting w Marshall the emergency. When did we go to 4?
Love that Longer is still number 1. Rate his abilities in the ruck contest so much, and will only get better and better.
Stitched up Gawn last year in round 20 odd which was superb.

4 emergencies were brought in this year. No idea why.Spinner wrote:Interesting w Marshall the emergency. When did we go to 4?

Still rate Longer too. He is a good ruck.

I would be quite surprised, nothing so far has suggested they are ready to run with Marshall as first ruck.parkeysainter wrote: Don't be suprised if Billy Longersaurus doesn't get up for Sat arvo as is a bit sore still. He only played 50% or less of both JLT matches. Feel like Longer will play.

I don’t think the game has passed him by at all but that said, Hickey is clearly not in a good place at the moment...stonecold wrote:Keep saying it, 'the game has gone past Hickledik'!!!!!
Don’t know if it’s lack of fitness, low confidence, personal issues or whatever.
For whatever reason Hickey is in terrible form. There is absolutely no mongrel in him at the moment, when he runs he seems to go at 75%, is completely afraid to kick the ball and looks like if got out in front of his man he’s worried the ball will bounce off his hands.
The decision btw the rucks is a no-brainer at the moment as Tom is a complete and utter shadow of himself. He’s not even playing for his life but more like a player that think he is a fraud and is scared more ppl will find out.
I think this is a big test for the coaching staff... they’ve got to get some self confidence into this guy. We know he is a much better player than this.
Even if the third man up rule has ruined him as a ruck, he’s still more than capable (as we saw) of being a menacing big man around the ground.

Re: Marshall gone past Hickey
If there's a query on Longer's fitness, then that would indicate that Marshall is ahead of Hickey. If Longer is a certainty then it could be a matter of encouragement for Marshall.
I wouldn't write off Hickey, at the moment he seems to have lost the timing of his jump (at centre bounces) and as we know he has struggled with the third man up Rule, which the AFL should change back because its stupid & pointless. His strength is his mobilty and skill for his size, he provides another midfielder.
The irony is that the other week in Cranbourne a group of Melb supporters were asking me who he was, because they were impressed by his mobility and felt he was running Gawn ragged around the ground.
Depth is a good problem to have.

Re: Marshall gone past Hickey
Good points, skeptic. I was very excited about Hickey's prospects after the 2016 season. He was one of the best ruckmen in the competition that year and took quite a few scalps. What's happened since is as puzzling as it is heartbreaking. I thought we'd solved our ruck problem. Hickey, a developing Billy and long "John Holmes" for back up. There was still hope for Lewie Pierce at that stage as well. What happened? I know he's had injury problems, but last year he went backwards at an alarming rate.skeptic wrote:I don’t think the game has passed him by at all but that said, Hickey is clearly not in a good place at the moment...stonecold wrote:Keep saying it, 'the game has gone past Hickledik'!!!!!

He looked bereft of all confidence and had no presence whatsoever. So, from having four viable options, it would appear that if Billy doesn't come up, our best bet is a one game player. IMHO, Marshall is the answer, but not quite yet. If the love bite is gone, it makes the 2012 draft and trade period a complete bust. Hickey should have been our number one ruckman by now. He's currently clearly third, behind a rookie and a guy who tries hard, but is a battler at best.

"Oh shut up."

While Emergencies are there as emergencies, I do tend to also believe that sometimes that some of whom gets named as one is designed a bit like an encouragement award.parkeysainter wrote:Well...it seems The Prospect has gone past Shaggy Dog given the selectors have named him as an emergency.
So it may well be in part designed to motivate him.

Re: Marshall gone past Hickey
One word: coaching.
And if this area doesn't improve Longer and Marshall will end up the same way.
We had King and Gardner ten years ago who were mature ready made ruckman from other clubs. We haven't developed a ruckman since Everitt which was, what, seventeen years ago now?
Training and development is very important and when you bring young players to a club they are supposed to improve, not go backwards if you have your training department properly staffed.
Coaches are like teachers, they are supposed to be able to produce data where they have improved players, and to have set goals with individual players which the players are expected to meet by a set time period.
I think it's a real worry that so many of our players seem to have just stagnated. I believe that we'll win 11/12 games again this year and probably finish ninth, but in real terms, and I'm happy to be proved wrong here especially in light of that fact that 2018 hasn't even begun yet and we're yet to play an actual match, we don't seem to have improved as a cohesive team unit in style of play since 2015. We won less games that year sure - 6 and a draw - but we still played exactly the same way with same the deficiencies.
I always predicted a return to finals in 2019 due to the retirements of Riewoldt, Montagna, etc around this time period - and I predicted this as far back as 2013 on here - so the fact that we are unlikely to play finals this year doesn't phase me one iota, but I predicted that when we do return to finals footy, that we do it in style in the top 4, like we did in 1997 and 2004.
I still think this is possible, and with a very different line up our game style will change considerably anyway, but based on what I saw at Casey Fields two weeks ago we'd want to start showing a bit more by the second half of the season for mine.

This is a massive change, it has been 3 emergencies since I started following footy in the early 80's!
The idea is that your 4th emergency is a ruckman - so you don't need to waste/use one of the normal 3 on a specialist position.
So that being the case, assuming Longer plays in Round 2, we will see either Marshall or Hickey as 4th emergency.
