2019 Leadersip Goddard the steps!
For me our biggest issue at the club is the lack of 26-30yr old leaders. We just don’t have any that are up to AFL standard (apart from Carlisle) While Jack S is a great player...he is not a champion leader.
This has come about purely through poor drafting and list management...I do believe this will fix itself by 2021-22 when our good younger players become very good on field players and leaders. The fact that Geary is our captain says it all....
So what do we do in 2019? I think we need to recruit some experienced on field leaders to help the coach. He isn’t going anywhere and if we don’t fix our onfeild organisation, we will be at round 7 in 2019 complaining bout the same stuff.
Step 1 - get Rooey back to club as an assistant coach. By all accounts he is a great coach and we know he is a champion leader.
Step 2 - recruit Brendon Goddard. He sets very high standards, knows his footy, loves our club and will be an excellent leader/coach on the field. I would even make him a vice captain. Not only would he help our younger players, the story would sell memeberships which going by this years trend of performance, will be lucky to each 30,000 next year. BJ is back! Sells at least another 5000 memberships.
Step 3 - offer a motherload of money to Mcgovan. Not to get him but to force west coast hand into paying overs for him. They will have to match our offer. In doing so this gives them less to pay Gaff. Take Gaff with a contract the eagles can’t pay. While not a ‘champ’ his numbers stack up. He is a very good ball user and in the age bracket we need.
Step 4 - trade Paddy for a second round pick. ANY second round pick will do. If the draft is as good as people are saying, this years second round is worth a first round in previous years.
Step 5- say goodbye to our recruiting staff and employ more and better ones.
Step 6 - get Lenny Hayes back as an assistant coach. Get Lenny...you get josh in 2020.

BJ is cooked. Sure, he may make it in coaching, but that’s a different thing

I've been thinking about getting BJ back also. Even if he only has a few years left, we have a leadership black hole left by Rooey and Joey. The young players aren't ready to step up yet. You see the issues BJ is having at Essendon and I think, we need that. We need someone on field to hold the players accountable. It would be a nice story too, just like Ablett at Geelong.

few years left for BJ? He's done. This year, next at the most.
Can you imagine how bad he would blow his cruit as a coach?

Get the whole band back together.
Roo, Hayes, BJ, Joey, Milne, Dal.
None of them is ready to coach though so that's a different thing.
They'd probably like to bring back Lyon.

He will give us more than Geary and if robo retires needs to be consideredbigred wrote:few years left for BJ? He's done. This year, next at the most.

Lenny already coaching
Roo will be excellent as an assistant and will be a very good senior coach one day
BJ would be great for onfeild leadership off half back.
Means our champs are back at the club...we need real leaders on and off he field!!
Robert Harvey wouldn’t go amiss ether
I watch the crows coaching team and the cats coaching team all their best players from the past are coaching...no coincidence they both remain great clubs..while we continue to be a rabble
Do we even have a a champion ex player from ANY club on our coaching panel or in our administration..?
Do we even know what elite standards are...if yes what is the reference point...we don’t have anyone playing that has them soooooo off field..?

I don't really get the obsession with bringing home old champs… successful clubs don't do this sentimental crap, they just hire the right people.
And most of the best coaches weren't superstar players, more likely to come from a stingy old back pocket than a Riewoldt.
A 33-34 YO Goddard returning to play would be embarrassing.

Re: 2019 Leadersip Goddard the steps!
They are all ideas, some are worth looking at.
Our problem was Richo needed to be playing finals, and got rid of Joey. He easily had more to offer and would have been the leader we wanted. A finals tilt with Joey would have worked, especially if we just had the 1 game

Don't forget BJ walked out on us in his desire for personal glory.
I wouldn't be showing him the welcome mat.
But I would love to have Lenny or Roo back in some way.

No, in 2010 Brendan nearly (singlehanded) brought us over the line. It’s not his faultEnrico_Misso wrote:Don't forget BJ walked out on us in his desire for personal glory.

Hard to take a post seriously when the title is nonsensical and contains a basic spelling error!
Perhaps try posting sober in future.

Re: 2019 Leadersip Goddard the steps!
Goddard is not and has never been a leaders arsehole.
Finger pointer who abuses his teammates , admire what he nearly did in the 2010 grand final but no need for him to be anywhere near our club.
Unlike Dal Santo who was forced out BJ was all about the money and personal success, played golf with James Hird during the middle of the season whilst a St Kilda player the man is a turn coat.
If he is such a good leader perhaps now might be a great time to show it with his new club going like busted arses, but no his old habits came to the surface again.
Riewoldt and Hayes were great leaders.

Re: 2019 Leadersip Goddard the steps!
Fair statements, and I don't think he would be the right choice now either, or the prick that went to Collingwood. All of these blokes should have though, been part of a very special time in our club's history, and should always be welcome at the club.Junior wrote:Goddard is not and has never been a leaders arsehole.

You are right with Dal Santo too...we really have stuffed a few things up

Reason he left was because of Watters.Enrico_Misso wrote:Don't forget BJ walked out on us in his desire for personal glory.

Yes I mentioned this some time ago and revisited it when BJ got monstered by much of the media for saying it as it needs to be sais to a non performing team with players not meeting the need. Simlla circumstances here at Saintland.
The question might be would BJ be a Vice Captain? I doubt it. I would be prepared to give him a go as the captain. Get Geary into key shut down roles and have him move for to continue the coaching needs there. Its an area that needs some game time adjustments and Geary could help big time their if he is not chasing quality forwards butts because the turnovers are making his life different on the field he doesn't have the time to address the forwards and midfield enough.
Both Goddard and Geary can be vocal. From what I see in games communication, accountability and leadership across the whole ground its what we need far more of.
Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.
